Asiad Boxing: Amit soldiers into final, injured Vikas settles for bronze

Debutant boxer Amit Panghal (49kg) continued his sensational run to make the final with a hard-fought win but an injured Vikas Krishan (75kg) had to settle for bronze after being declared medically unfit for his semifinal at the 18th Asian Games here today. Govt approves Kho Kho team's participation in 1st International Championship

The Sports Ministry today approved the participation of a Kho Kho team from India in the first International Kho Kho Championships to be held in England from September 1 to 4. The approval means the government will extend financial support to the squad. "Financial support for participation of the Kho Kho team in an international event has been approved for the first time in relaxation of extant guidelines of the Ministry, which lay down that sports disciplines like Kho Kho, which are categorised as 'Others', will not be eligible for financial support for participation in international sporting events," Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said in a statement. The statement said that the decision to provide financial support to the Kho Kho Federation of India for participation in the first International Kho Kho Championship has been taken with a view to give boost to the traditional Indian sport and its players. Chennaiyin FC signs Palestine forward Salom

: Indian Super League champions Chennaiyin FC have signed up Argentina-born Palestine forward Carlos Antonio Salom Zulema on a season-long loan from Thailand League One outfit Bangkok United. The 31-year old forward has represented Palestine at international level and is CFC's seventh and final foreign signing ahead of their title defence in the 2018-19 ISL campaign, a press release here said. VAR in Champions League only from 2019-20 season, say UEFA

UEFA are set to wait until next season before introducing Video Assistant Referees (VAR) in the Champions League, although they are still not ruling out having it in this season's final, president Aleksander Ceferin said on Friday. Ceferin has so far resisted calls to bring VAR into Europe's elite club competition, despite the system largely proving successful at the World Cup in Russia. It has also been introduced in Spain's La Liga and Ligue 1 in France this season, with those leagues following on from the German Bundesliga and Serie A in Italy, although the English Premier League has also been more cautious. Indian judokas Avtar Singh and Rajwinder Kaur were knocked out of the 18th Asian Games after losing in the men's and women's competition, here today. Singh lost to United Arabs Emirates' Ivan Remarenco 1-10 in the men's -100 kg elimination round of 16, while Kaur went down by a similar margin to Japan's Akira Sone in women's +78 kg quarterfinals here. Singh received a shido penalty for minor violations and the competition ended when his rival earned an ippon decision the biggest point scored in judo.
