Kohli hits out at 100-ball format: Commercial aspect hurting quality of cricket

India captain Virat Kohli feels cricket is losing out on quality because of the "commercial aspects" which are taking over the game and also criticised proposed experiments such as the 100-ball format being pushed by the England Board. Kohli, who leads India across all three formats also plays the BCCI's marquee flagship event the Indian Premier League for six weeks, making for a very exhaustive schedule. "I'm already very I wouldn't say frustrated, but sometimes it can get very demanding of you when you have to play so much cricket regularly. I feel somewhere the commercial aspect is taking over the real quality of cricket and that hurts me," Kohli told the 'Wisden Cricket Monthly' today. While the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is starting a new 100-ball format, which has drawn flak from all quarters, the Indian skipper announced that he won't be a part of "one more format". "Obviously for the people involved (ECB) in the whole process and the set-up it will be really ...

Dortmund finds its striker: Barcelona's Paco Alcacer

Borussia Dortmund has agreed to sign Spanish forward Paco Alcacer on loan from Barcelona with an option to buy. The Bundesliga side says the 24-year-old Alcacer completed a medical on Tuesday and will wear the No. 9 for the club. Should Dortmund take up the option to keep the player, he will be tied to the club for a further four years after the one-year loan spell. Kicker magazine reported Dortmund was paying 2 million euros ($2.3 million) for the loan spell, while a permanent transfer fee would be 23 million euros ($27 million) if the club decides to keep him. Dortmund had been looking for a striker following the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Arsenal in January, and the end of Michy Batshuayi's loan spell as his replacement. Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc says: "We're firmly convinced this type of player will be a good fit for our style of play." Alcacer, who joined Barcelona from Valencia in 2016, scored 43 goals and set up two more in 151 Spanish league ...

West Ham survive scare, three Premier League sides exit League Cup

West Ham survived a scare from League One Wimbledon to register Manuel Pellegrini's first win in charge and progress to the third round of the League Cup as Premier League sides Cardiff, Huddersfield and Brighton bowed out on Tuesday. The Hammers have suffered three straight defeats to begin their league season, despite former Real Madrid and Manchester City boss Pellegrini being backed with nearly GBP 100 million (USD 128.7 million) in the transfer market, and went behind inside two minutes at Kingsmeadow through Joe Pigott's header. But the hosts were reduced to 10 men after just 18 minutes as Rod McDonald was dismissed for a second yellow card and second-half goals from Issa Diop, Angelo Ogbonna and Javier Hernandez secured a 3-1 win to spare Pellegrini's blushes. Cardiff's poor start to the season on their return to the top flight continued with a comprehensive 3-1 defeat at home to Championship side Norwich. Saido Berahino scored his first goal since February 2016 to send Stoke ..

Trump welcomes FIFA chief Infantino, gives press red card

President Donald Trump welcomed FIFA boss Gianni Infantino to the White House on Tuesday, congratulating football's governing body for awarding the 2026 World Cup to North America before jokingly waving a red card at journalists. "I very much appreciate the fact that we have won a very important event, the World Cup in 2026," said Trump, who had backed the joint USA-Mexico-Canada bid which triumphed over Morocco at a vote in Moscow on June. Trump meanwhile revealed that his 12-year-old son Barron was a keen football fan while describing the World Cup as "maybe the biggest sporting event in the world." "Soccer is a game, I guess you call it football," Trump added. "But over here, maybe at some point they'll change the name, I'm not sure. But we'll see. It's working very well either way." Trump meanwhile noted that he would be out of office by the time the 48-team tournament arrived in North America. "I won't be here. Maybe they'll extend the term," he said to laughter, as he gestured ..

The naked truth: Djokovic enjoys mid-match ice bath

Novak Djokovic said it was a "magnificent feeling" when he and US Open opponent Marton Fucsovics sat naked in separate, adjacent ice baths during a heat break on Tuesday. For the first time in the history of the Grand Slam event, male players have been told they can take a 10-minute break from the searing heat when a match has reached two sets to one. Djokovic and Hungary's Fucsovics spent their brief time off court at the Arthur Ashe Stadium by stripping down and plunging into ice baths to cool off from the 38-degree heat. "I want to thank US Open for allowing us to have a 10 minute break. I think we both needed it," said Wimbledon champion and two-time US Open winner Djokovic. "We had the ice baths next to each other. We were naked in the ice baths -- it was a magnificent feeling I must say to be naked with the guy you are still battling when the match hasn't finished." Djokovic won the first round tie 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Djokovic survives heat, Fucsovics to reach US Open 2nd round

Novak Djokovic suffered in sweltering US Open conditions but held on to reach the second round with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory over Hungarian Marton Fucsovics. The Wimbledon champion, playing his first match on Athur Ashe Stadium since falling to Stan Wawrinka in the 2016 final, received a brutal welcome back as soaring temperatures and suffocating humidity prompted organizers to offer the men a 10-minute mid-match heat break for the first time ever. "We obviously both struggled, you could see that, you could feel that, especially (over) two and a half sets, three sets," said Djokovic, who called trainers who enveloped him in ice packed towels during a change over late in the second set. "Towards the end of third we started playing a bit better," Djokovic said. "I started hitting the ball -- before that it was survival mode." Djokovic missed last year's US Open with a right elbow injury. After a rocky start to 2018 he claimed his 13th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon. His Cincinnati ..

Five-time champion Roger Federer eased into the second round of the US Open on Tuesday, beating Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka 6-2 6-2 6-4. The Swiss great, seeded second at Flushing Meadows behind defending champion and world number one Rafael Nadal, improved his perfect record in US Open first-round matches with his 18th win in 18 attempts. As the opening attraction of the night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Federer escaped the worst of hot, humid conditions that punished players earlier in the day. Nor did he meet much resistance from Nishioka, who was ranked 58th in the world last March before tearing a left knee ligament and sliding out of the top 150. After rolling through the first two sets with the loss of just four games, Federer cruised to a 4-0 lead in the third. Up 5-1, he was unable to close out the match against Nishioka's serve, and then was broken on his first attempt to serve it out himself. Yuki Bhambri bows out in 1st round of US Open

India's top singles player Yuki Bhambri once again failed to clear the first round hurdle of a Grand Slam losing to Frenchman Pierre Hugues Herbert in straight sets at the US Open. Bhambri, who is world No 96 lost 3-6 6-7 (3-7) 5-7 to Herbert in a match that lasted nearly two and half hours. The India No 1 did put up a fight in the second and third sets but that wasn't enough to beat the world No 75, who had earlier got better of the Delhi boy during the Maharashtra Open. There wasn't much to choose statistically between the two players even though Herbert converted a couple of more breakpoints. However what made the difference was the Frenchman being able to unleash winners at various key moments. In all, he hit 13 winners in three sets while Bhambri failed to hit any.
