Aware eyes World Championships comeback; asks WFI for trail
Commonwealth Games gold medallist wrestler Rahul Aware, who is recovering from an injury, is eyeing a comeback for the Wrestling World Championships to be held in Hungary in October. "I felt bad as I could not participate in the Asian Games. There is World Championship to be held in October last week and I am trying to get fit for it. I have requested them (Wrestling Federation of India) to take my trail, but their decision is awaited (on it)," Aware told reporters at sidelines of an event here. The World Championship is scheduled to be held in Budapest from October 20 to 28. The 26-year-old Maharashtra grappler Aware missed the ongoing Asian Games as his old left-knee problem flared up days before the trials for these Games, and on his doctor's advise he gave it a miss. Unheralded Manjit outshines Jinson to win India's third athletics gold
Little-known Manjit Singh stole the limelight by leading a rare one-two for India in the men's 800m before the country settled for a silver in the 400m mixed relay, which made its debut at the Asian Games here today. The silver in the mixed relay, though, could turn into gold as the Athletics Federation of India lodged a protest against Bahrain for causing obstruction to Hima Das during the event. The protest has been accepted by the jury of appeals, who will give a ruling tomorrow morning. In the 800m, Manjit was not a much-talked about medal prospect in the build-up to the Games but he brought home the third track and field gold for India after shot putter Tejinderpal Singh Toor and javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra's heroics. New kabaddi league in offing
An unrecognised kabaddi body, called the New Kabaddi Federation of India (NKFI), has decided to launch a new league featuring Indian and international players. The 'Indo International Premier Kabaddi League' is set to have eight teams with 62 matches spread over one-and-a half months, a media release said today. Each team is to have 3-4 foreign players from countries across the world. The league is planning to attract players from New Zealand, Poland, Argentina, Tanzania, Australia, Norway, the United Kingdom, Canada, the USA, Afghanistan, Iran, Mexico, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Kenya, Iraq, Denmark, the release said. Sri Lanka warns players of match-fixing approaches
Sri Lanka cricket chiefs today raised a new match-fixing alert after "suspicious individuals" were kicked out of a Twenty20 game. Players have been warned to tell authorities of any attempt to approach them to fix matches, a Sri Lanka Cricket official told AFP. The move follows the detection of suspicious individuals at a Sri Lankan league game in Dambulla on Saturday, in which a Galle team led by Dimuth Karunaratne beat Dasun Shanaka's Kandy by seven runs. "They appeared to be from the Indian sub-continent. Their excessive use of mobile phones at the stadium aroused suspicion and they were ordered out," the official said. The board said in a statement that it had stepped up anti-corruption measures at SLC T20 games and team hotels.
