India on IAAF's radar for holding Diamond League

India might get to host the Diamond League of athletics as the glitzy showpiece, which features the top stars of the sport, needs to be taken to all major cities of the world, IAAF President Sebastian Coe said today. Here for the ongoing Asian Games, Coe spoke to PTI about the possibility of Diamond League coming to India. "The concentration of Diamond League or world events has historically been in European countries. We want to maintain that strength, but we have to make sure that big cities are hosting our sport, cities like Delhi, Tokyo, Beijing in Asia," Coe said. The Diamond League is a 14-leg series in which top athletes compete for prize money and points. It was established in 2010 to replace the Golden League to take the sport beyond Europe and as IAAF's contract with the event sponsors draws to an end, discussions are being held to take it to new cities. Palestinians slam FIFA for chief's ban over Messi incitement

The Palestinian soccer federation is lashing out at FIFA for banning its chief from games for a year for inciting against superstar Lionel Messi as part of his campaign to stop Argentina's national team from playing in Israel. The Palestine Football Association says Saturday the decision by international soccer's ruling body was "absurd and lacking in evidence." FIFA says Jibril Rajoub "incited hatred and violence" by calling on soccer fans "to target the Argentinian Football Association and burn jerseys and pictures of Lionel Messi." Argentina eventually abandoned the trip to Jerusalem for a game against Israel in June. Argentina Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie said at the time players felt "totally attacked, violated" after images emerged of the team's white and sky-blue striped jerseys stained with red paint resembling blood.

Tearful Sun 'buzzing' after laying down Olympic marker

Chinese giant Sun Yang came into the Asian Games with the reputation as a one-man wrecking crew and left savouring his redemption -- and in tears at his own achievements. The three-times Olympic champion barely broke sweat in scooping four individual gold medals from 200 metres freestyle up to the 1,500m in Jakarta, screamed on by an army of flag-waving cheergirls who had made the trip from China. Sun sparked controversy at the last Asian Games in 2014 by sneering at the Japanese national anthem after being upset by Kosuke Hagino in the 200m. Four years older and wiser at 26, swimming's enfant terrible showed his softer side, bursting into tears after Friday's 1,500m victory. "I didn't train or swim the distance at big competitions since 2014," sobbed the Chinese superstar. "It means to much to me that all the hard work has paid off. It's a huge boost for me." Sun launched a charm offensive in Indonesia, aware that a hostile crowd will do little for his hopes at the 2020 Tokyo ...

"Since 1975 I have been fighting to make weightlifting a clean sport," the president of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) told AFP at the Asian Games in Jakarta. "I devoted my life against doping," said the highly respected Hungarian sports administrator, who has been secretary general of his country's National Olympic Committee since 1989.
