Now Indian women suffer shock defeat to Iran in kabaddi final

Iran hurt India's pride in kabaddi yet again as it delivered a second straight knockout punch to the sport's most successful nation in the women's gold medal match of the 18th Asian Games here today. The two-time defending champions was shocked 24-27 in a thrilling final as the firm favourites settled for silver. India's raiders disappointed in the title clash as Iran came from behind to jolt them in the second half. The Iranian women emulated thus their male counterparts, who had shocked seven-time champions India in the semifinals yesterday. Payel and Sonali were effective with their raids while the defenders also handled the tackles well as the Indians raced to a 7-3 lead. The most dangerous looking Iranian was Azadeh Saidisiahbidi but she was forced out after a successful tackle. Randeep Kaur went for a raid after Iran's two-point raid but she was unsuccessful as Iran gradually reduced the deficit to 6-7. Randeep though made amends in the next attempt with a two-point raid, ...

Three Indian boxers enter quarters of world youth boxing

Three Indian boxers, including reigning champion Nitu (48kg), advanced to the quarterfinals of the world youth championships here. Anamika (51kg), who did not get a first-round bye, entered the pre-quarters after beating Bulgaria's Goryana Stoeva in her opening bout 5-0 last night. Among the three who made the quarters, two were from the men's draw. Asian bronze-medallist Bhavesh Kittamani (52kg) and S Barun Singh (49kg) advanced to the last eight with identical victories. Nitu, on the other hand, pummelled her opponent -- Bulgaria's Aynurova Zakifova -- prompting the referee to stop the contest in the Indian's favour in the third round. Bhavesh also claimed a dominating 5-0 win over Iran's Mobin Alaee, while Barun defeated Uzbekistan's Sodirbek Komolmirzaev by a similar scoreline. There was disappointment as well with Nitin Kumar (75kg) going down in a split 1-4 verdict to Uzbekistan's Navo Tamazov.

Heena Sidhu wins bronze, heartbreak for Manu

Experienced Indian shooter Heena Sidhu settled for a bronze medal in a topsy-turvy women's 10m air rifle final of the Asian Games here today. Heena shot a near-perfect 10.8 with just three shooters left in the field but a 9.6 in the next attempt dashed her hopes of a better finish at the Jakabaring Shooting Range. Having made an incredible comeback after languishing at 13th and 17th places in the qualification stage, Heena did not look content with the eventual third-place finish as she managed to reduce the gap to a mere 0.1 between her and the gold medal. Heena shot 219.3 in the final. There was more disappointment in store for 16-year-old Manu Bhaker as the Commonwealth Games gold-medallist was eliminated at fifth place with a score of 176.2. For two straight events at the ongoing Games, Bhaker shot brilliantly in the qualifications and cracked in the final. Bopanna-Sharan pair lands men's doubles gold at Asian Games

Top seeds Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan notched up their maiden men's doubles gold medal at the Asian Games, dominating the final clash with a thoroughly clinical performance here today. Bopanna and Sharan defeated Aleksander Bublik and Denis Yevseyev of Kazakhstan 6-3 6-4 in 52 minutes. Less than 20 minutes into the match, the Indians were 4-1 ahead, breaking Bublik and Yevseyev at the very first opportunity they got. In no time, the top seeds were serving for the set with a 5-3 lead and Bopanna's booming serve wrapped it up in style for them. The Kazakhs had their moments but were undone by erratic play -- a brilliant cross-court backhand winner one moment and a powerless return buried in the nets the very next minute. In contrast, Bopanna and Sharan's easy camaraderie shone through in the match and they displayed near-perfect on-court coordination. Bopanna was particularly formidable from the baseline, displaying a good range of strokes to pull off some tough winners, helped by ..

"Yesterday we had a bad day but soldiers never give up. I told my teammates that we will go for the gold and we will give it all. It was about karo ya maro (do or die). The team of Bishindee Urantungalag, ranked as low as 254 and Otgobbold Baatarkhuya, ranked 94 in the world, nosed ahead by taking the first set 2-0.
