Croatia World Cup keeper Subasic retires

Croatia goalkeeper Danijel Subasic announced his international retirement today one month after starring in the World Cup final. The time has come after 10 years on the national team to say goodbye my favourite jersey," Subasic wrote in a letter published by the Croatian Football Federation (HNS), a day after striker Mario Mandzukic retired. "I made my decision long before the World Cup because my dream was to end my career with the national team at a World Cup," Subasic added. "The one in Russia was the most emotional moment of my career... thank you all," added the Monaco goalkeeper. The native of Zadar made his debut for the "Vatreni" (Fiery Ones) in 2009. No foreign coach but squash federation plays down player concerns

The Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI) today hit out at Dipika Pallikal, one of the country's top players, for voicing concerns over the lack of a qualified foreign coach. From Pallikal to Sourav Ghoshal, the country's top players have lamented the absence of a foreign coach since the acrimonious exit of Achraf El Karargui days before the Commonwealth Games in March. Now, they are heading to heading to the Asian Games in Indonesia, without a foreign coach by their side. "It is unfortunate that at a time when the focus had to be on the Asian Games with just days remaining, an effort is being made to disrupt the mindset of all concerned with the preparations for the Games," the SRFI said here. Dipika had claimed that the exit of Egyptian coach Karargui was a blow to the players and that she did not consider national coach Cyrus Poncha and Bhuvaneshwari Kumari as coaches. Anand struggling in last place

Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand again had an average day scoring 3.5 points out of a possible nine and was pushed to the last spot in the St Louis Rapid and Blitz competition here. Anand began the day with two losses on the trot and then stabilised a little by settling for a few draws and a win. However, a last round loss to Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan did not help, leaving the Indian ace with a lot of ground to cover in this leg of the Grand chess tour. Hikaru Nakamura of the United States and Mamedyarov stayed in front on 17 points apiece after the first day of blitz and Fabiano Caruana of the USA remained in third on 15.5 points. Closing in the gap was Maxime Vashir-Lagrave of France who came up with a spectacular performance to notch five wins and four draws in the blitz first day. Vachier-Lagrave stands fourth on 15 points, a point clear of Levon Aronian of Armenia, who in turn is 1.5 points clear of sixth placed Sergey Karjakin of Russia. Leinier Dominguez of

Champions League glory not pivotal to being judged a success: De Bruyne

Manchester City don't need to win the Champions League to be judged a success, claims Belgian star Kevin de Bruyne in an interview with the BBC. European club football's most prestigious trophy has proved elusive to City despite the hundreds of millions invested in players since Abu Dhabi United Group bought the club in 2008 with a semi-final appearance in the 2015/16 season under Manuel Pellegrini their best showing. However, De Bruyne -- whose Champions League hopes were dashed by Premier League rivals Liverpool last season -- tells the BBC winning the league crown last season probably ranks as a greater achievement than if one were to win the Champions League. "I don't agree that we have to win the Champions League to be a success," said De Bruyne, who has been with City since 2015. "It is a big title to win but in the Champions League you don't need to have the consistency that you need in the league. "We were great for the whole year, maybe a bit less against Liverpool, and so we

Bengaluru end Spanish tour with defeat to Barcelona B

Bengaluru FC ended their 2018 tour of Spain with a 3-0 loss to FC Barcelona B at the Mini Estadi here. It was the proverbial game of two halves as the Blues opted to be cautious in the opening exchanges. With Barcelona B seamless in attack, Bengaluru were compact in shape and tight in defence to thwart any possible danger. Working hard off the ball, the Blues finally managed to create successive chances around the 20th minute. Miku who created space in the box after being fed by Sunil Chhetri managed a good attempt on target but was denied by Ezkieta. Moments later, it was the skipper who went close firing his left volley just wide of the vertical. The second half was a different story, with the hosts upping their game. Quick passes in the final third caught the Blues' defence off guard as Barcelona B went 2-0 up in seven minutes around the hour-mark. Monchu broke the deadlock in the 55th minute with a cracker from distance before Carles Perez doubled the advantage with a finish from .
