Cherchesov gets two more years as Russia coach

Russian national team football coach Stanislav Cherchesov today saw his contract extended by at least another two years after the side's better-than-expected performance at the World Cup. "The Russian Football Federation announces it has signed a new contract with the head coach of the Russian team, Stanislav Cherchesov," it said in a statement. The contract is for two years with the possibility of a further two-year extension, the federation added. It thanked the former footballer for his "successful work in preparation for the 2018 World Cup" which took place in Russia this summer. Russia reached the quarter-finals of the tournament for the first time in its post-Soviet history despite being the lowest-ranked team, leading to euphoric scenes on the streets of Moscow and elsewhere. "Stanislav Cherchesov and his team have the complete trust of the federation. We anticipate bright victories and significant achievements ahead for the Russian team," said Aleksandr Alaev, the acting head .

IOA adds one member to pencak silat squad

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) today added one member to the truncated Pencak Silat squad for the upcoming Asian Games before submitting the final list of the 541-member Indian contingent to the Sports Ministry. The IOA has added bridge, men's handball and sport climbing to the final list after initially announcing a 524-member contingent on July 3. The national Olympic body, which had dropped as many as 20 athletes from the pencak silat squad earlier this month, has now added another member to make it a three-member team comprising Sonia, Simran, and Boynao Singh. A 24-member bridge unit has also been accommodated, so has been a 16-member men's handball squad besides the addition of three athletes in sports climbing. However, the IOA is yet to announce the list of officials travelling to the Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang from August 18 to September 2.

Spanish top division side conducts coaching session in Kochi

Spanish top division side Girona FC today conducted a closed-door football coaching session for students of Don Bosco school and junior academy players of Kerala Blasters at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here. The team is here to compete in the LaLiga World tournament, a pre-season event. Girona FC players Gorka Iraizoz Moreno, Cristian Portugues, David Timor, Kevin Soni, Yhoan Andzouana conducted the session with an aim to establish football as a growing sport in India. Girona FC, who stunned Champions League winners Real Madrid in the La Liga last season, will play Indian Super League (ISL) outfit Kerala Blasters tomorrow. Girona FC are the first ever La Liga team to visit India, and only the second from the top European leagues.

Kerala Blasters were faced with an arduous task of recovering from a 6-0 drubbing as they got ready to take on Spanish top division side Girona FC in the Toyota Yaris LaLiga World tournament here tomorrow. The Indian Super League franchise, who conceded half a dozen goals against A-League side Melbourne FC in the tournament opener, would want to end their campaign on a positive note at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium. Jehan claims pole to flag win in Formula 3

Indian driver Jehan Daruvala completed an exhilarating pole to flag victory in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship here today. Formula 1 hopeful Jehan also had the fastest lap to his name in race one of the weekend at the legendary Spa Francorchamps circuit. The teenage racing sensation from Mumbai, had a tense qualifying earlier yesterday, and began setting lap times with only five minutes left for the session to end. Jehan was fifth on the timesheets after his first lap and improved to provisional second on the next lap. On his third and last effort, Jehan gave it everything for a brilliant lap to bag pole position by 0.10 seconds ahead of the then championship leader Marcus Armstrong of New Zealand. Meghalaya organises 'baby league' to promote football

The recognition and growth of football in the Northeastern province of Meghalaya are growing gradually, and recently the state has also introduced 'Meghalaya Baby League' to encourage tiny players to play football.Children in the age group of 4 to 13 years are participating in the league, which is a six-month-long event.The league is organized every weekend and on other holidays, thus not affecting the children's school schedule.The aim is to provide children with a regular exposure to competitive football over a period of six months in order to develop their game, instil confidence, and create a base of players that can be drawn on and taken to the next level in their teenage years.A total of 12 teams are participating in 25 matches spread across all age groups from 4 years to 13 years.The 4-5 years and 5-6 years age groups are five-a-side with a minimum of 10 players in each team.The 8-9 years, 10-11 years and 12-13 years age groups are seven-a-side and have a minimum of 12 players .

Asian Games: IOA releases final list of participants

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has released the final list of the participants who will be featuring in the upcoming 18th edition of the Asian Games.A total of 541 athletes from India will be seen participating in 37 sports events.Athletics will see maximum participation, with a total of 51 players participating in the prestigious tournament. It will be followed by hockey which has 36 players under the category.Sambo has the lowest number of participants, with only one male player competing in the event.While badminton consists of a 20-member contingent, table tennis will see 10 players participating in the event.In 2014, India won a total of 57 medals, including 11 gold, 10 silver and 36 bronze medals.On a related note, Asian Games are slated to take place from August 18 to September 2 in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang.

Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra qualifies for Diamond League Final

India's star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has qualified for the prestigious Diamond League Final, which will be held here on August 30. Reigning Commonwealth Games champion, Chopra, finished fifth in the Rabat (Morocco) leg of the Diamond League series earlier this month, with a best throw of 83.32m. He collected four Diamond League points from there and made it to the Final along with five other athletes. Besides Chopra, current world champion Johannes Vetter, Olympic champion Thomas Rohler, 2017 IAAF Diamond League champion Jakub Vadlejch, German champion Andreas Hofmann and Estonian record holder Magnus Kirt have also qualified. AICS recommends medical insurance for sportspersons

The All India Council of Sports today requested the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), National Sports Federations (NSF) and chief ministers of all states to cover the country's athletes under a medical insurance. "In the absence of any concrete medical assistance scheme for sportspersons, chief ministers of all states, Indian Olympic Association and National Sports Federations have been requested to provide medical insurance coverage to their respective sportspersons," the AICS said in a release. The 10th meeting of AICS was held under the chairmanship of Vijay Kumar Malhotra. "Since there is a dire need of medical attendance to sportspersons, AICS has requested the Army Medical Service to extend their facilities to our sportspersons especially for the sportspersons living in remote areas like Arunachal Pradesh, Leh (Ladakh), Andaman & Nicobar Island," the AICS added.
