Former England captain Michael Vaughan on Thursday termed the selection of English spinner Adil Rashid for the upcoming five-match Test series against India as 'ridiculous.'Rashid's comeback in the larger format of the game raised many eyebrows as the bowler had, reportedly, stated that he would be concentrating only on ODI format. Moreover, the player has signed a white-ball-only contract with Yorkshire county cricket club.Vaughan took to Twitter and wrote that irrespective of whether the player is good enough or not, the decision is ridiculous."So we have picked someone who cannot be arsed with 4-day cricket for the Test Team ... Forget whether he is good enough or not I find this decision ridiculous ... !!!," he tweeted.England national selector Ed Smith, however, defended the move and said that Rashid had confirmed his availability before the selection committee and that keeping in view his ODI form, a unanimous decision was made by the panel."Before the selection meeting, Adil had
The Philippines national basketball team said today it has pulled out of the Asian Games as it prepares to appeal sanctions handed down over a nasty on-court brawl with Australia at a World Cup qualifier. Basketball's governing body FIBA suspended 10 players and two coaches from the Philippines national squad over the melee, which saw players and fans exchanging wild punches and flying kicks at the July 2 match in Manila. "We just don't have the time and chance to send an optimal team for the Asian Games. England leg-spinner Adil Rashid has hit back at Michael Vaughan who had criticised the selectors' decision to recall him in the Test squad, saying the former captain's comments were "stupid" and "do not matter". Rashid's inclusion to the Test squad for the home series against India has brought sharp reactions from ex-players with Vaughan terming it as "ridiculous". Vaughan had questioned the decision of the England selectors, saying that someone who does not want to play the longer format has been rewarded with a Test spot on the basis of his recent limited overs form. The 30-year-old Rashid was chosen for the Test series against India starting on August 1 despite signing a white-ball only contract with Yorkshire for the 2018 season. Rashid said Vaughan's comments about his recall to the Test squad was a kind of nonsense being spoken by ex-players. "He (Vaughan) can say a lot and he thinks people might listen. A lot of people have got no interest in what he says. His opinions do not ..

Australia coach Justin Langer was handed more power today in a shake-up of the national cricket selection process following the resignation of Mark Waugh. A streamlined selection panel will now consist of just three people -- Langer, Trevor Hohns and Greg Chappell -- with Waugh not being replaced. Langer will chair the Twenty20 panel, with support from the other two, while Hohns will head the Test and one-day process in consultation with Langer and Chappell. Previously, Waugh -- who leaves next month to join pay-TV company Fox Sports -- focused only on T20s. "This sees Justin take on additional responsibility as both the head coach and lead selector in Twenty20 cricket, as we build towards the ICC World T20 in Australia in 2020," said Cricket Australia's team performance chief Pat Howard. "Justin has performed a similar role previously while coach of the Perth Scorchers, and has a wealth of knowledge around the Big Bash League and its players." Cricket Australia's selection panel has
Phil Foden went to this summer's World Cup as a fan but the Manchester City teenager is determined to play a starring role for England at Qatar 2022. England's run to the semi-finals of the World Cup in Russia came despite the absence of a recognised creative midfielder, a vacancy seen as a priority for manager Gareth Southgate to fill. Foden has already been mentioned as a possible answer to England's creative problems. The 18-year-old, who helped England win the Under-17 World Cup last year, wants to increase his game time in the Premier League after making 10 appearances last campaign. His progress was stalled after spending seven weeks on the sidelines with an ankle problem but making his debut in the Champions League was another important milestone. Manager Pep Guardiola recognizes the Stockport born star's undoubted potential and is set to refuse any loan moves to keep him at the Etihad. Foden, who sat out the Under-19 European Championships this summer in order to take part in

Rashid has not made himself available to Yorkshire County Championship this season. Former England captain Vaughan, who himself played for Yorkshire, blasted the decision on his twitter page. "So we have picked someone who cannot be arsed with 4 day cricket for the Test Team ... Forget whether he is good enough or not I find this decision ridiculous ... !!!," Vaughan wrote.
