Wagh says 10-wicket haul has given his career much needed fillip

Left-arm medium pacer Shrikant Wagh, who starred in English league cricket by taking all 10 wickets, says his rare feat has provided a much needed fillip to his career. Wagh's stellar performance came for Stokesley Cricket Club in the match against Middlesbrough. A fit-again Wagh returned with figures of 11.4-1-39-10. Asked about his feat, Wagh told PTI, "I did not expect to take a 10-wicket haul. I am going well after the surgery lay off last year. I am very fit and keen as ever. I am expecting more good performances." Wagh underwent a left knee surgery after getting injured during warm-up before a Ranji Trophy game last year, keeping him out of action for eight months. Wagh, who has picked up 33 wickets so far in the league, is optimistic that the feat will help him bounce back stronger. "100 (per cent) as any good performance helps a sportsman. This will help me come back stronger," Wagh said when asked whether his effort would propel his career. Wagh has so far played 63 ...

We are willing to send football team to Asian Games on own cost: AIFF

An utterly helpless All India Football Federation today said it is willing to send the national team to the Asian Games on its own cost while slamming the IOA for not having the "courtesy to officially intimate" them about its decision to not clear the side. As per the Indian Olympic Association's regulations, only those national teams which are ranked between 1-8 at the continental level, are cleared for the Games. "I wrote a letter to the IOA explaining our disappointment and unhappiness of this decision without really consulting with us and trying to understand what is happening in football world. If expenses are an issue we are willing to pay for the team's travel and stay," AIFF general secretary Kushal Das said here. This was a day after the AIFF said the Narinder Batra-led body lacked "vision and competence". Still wanting to cling on to hope, Das called it an "unfortunate" gathering of scribes at the Football House, on the outskirts of the capital. "I would like to state and ..

IOA chief disapproves of Khelo India selecting hockey players

Indian Olympic Association President Narinder Batra has questioned the Sports Ministry's move to pick hockey players under the Khelo India Talent Development Programme, saying that the IOA will not approve such a selection if the National Sports Federation was not involved. The ministry has selected 50 boys and girls each from the Khelo India School Games held earlier this year. It informed Hockey India and the IOA on June 25 about this selection of players to groom them under its Talent Development Programme. In response to the ministry's move, Batra said, "I would like to understand whether the athletes in the attached list under Khelo India Talent development programme have been selected by the selection committee of the NSF or by the Sports Authority of India approved selectors thru Khelo India. "In case the NSF is not involved then we do not approve of this selection." A few months ago, Batra had asked the office bearers of all the NSFs to desist from associating with the Khelo ..

Australia's Stanlake tears through Pakistan for easy win

Australian fast bowler Billy Stanlake demolished Pakistan's top order with four quick wickets to set up a nine-wicket win today in the second match of the Zimbabwe Twenty20 Tri-Series. Stanlake took 4 for 8 in his opening burst, the most economical spell by an Australian in T20 international cricket, and the second best ever behind James Faulkner's 5 for 27 the last time the two teams met. His efforts held Pakistan to 116 all out, a score Australia chased down with ease, with captain Aaron Finch registering an unbeaten 68 as they cantered home with more than nine overs to spare. Aditi finishes 63rd in Women's PGA Championship

Indian golfer Aditi Ashok capped a disappointing week with a one-over 73 for a total of nine-over 297 to finish Tied-63rd at the KPMG Women's PGA Championships here. Aditi, who is playing only her second year on the LPGA Tour, had four bogeys, three of them in a row on the back nine from 12th to 14th, and three birdies. The 20-year-old was playing her second Major of the year and had missed the cut at ANA Inspiration. Sung Hyun Park, the sixth ranked player in the world, outlasted a three-person playoff, defeating So Yeon Ryu and Nasa Hataoka on the second extra hole to win her second major title and fourth career victory on the LPGA Tour. Park rolled in birdie putts on both playoff holes, the second one dropping in at the par 4, 16th hole after a 20-minute weather delay. She cried openly on her caddie David Jones' shoulder after missing three cuts in her last four starts. Park recorded the only bogey-free round on Sunday at Kemper Lakes Golf Club, a 3-under par, 69 to force a ...

When Japan's Blue Samurai take on Belgium today for a spot in the World Cup quarter finals, fans nationwide will pack spots from bars to temples to cheer them on. Players question men's doubles combinations for Asian Games

The AITA selection committee has erred by not picking two specialists doubles teams for the Asian Games, feel a number of players, who questioned veteran Leander Paes' pairing with Sumit Nagal. The players though backed AITA's decision to team Rohan Bopanna with Divij Sharan, as was requested by the top two players in the country. Players inside top-100 -- Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Purav Raja -- and N Sriram Balaji and Vishnu Vardhan, who have earned their maiden Grand Slam debut, have all voiced concern at the Paes-Nagal pairing. "Definitely Bopanna and Divij are playing well and ranked 1 and 2. It makes sense to pair them. I don't understand where did Sumit come into doubles. Nothing against him as a player. Since we want our best pairs to get medals for our county, we need to send the best doubles pairs," said Balaji from London. The Chennai-player said going by the rankings of Paes and Nagal, they are unlikely to be seeded. "It's not that we don't have higher-ranked doubles ...
