Disgraced Australia stars Steve Smith and David Warner, both banned from top-flight international cricket for 12 months, were drafted Sunday for the Global T20 Canada event starting June 28. Former Australia captain Smith had already been announced as a marquee player for the inaugural edition of the event. Smith was sacked after the third Test against South Africa in March, later accepting a 12-month ban by Cricket Australia for his role in the ball-tampering scandal that rocked the sport. Warner, who was the vice-captain, was also banned for 12 months and Cameron Bancroft was suspended for nine months. Warner was selected in the third round of the draft by the Winnipeg Hawks, who took West Indies' Dwayne Bravo and South African left-hander David Miller in the first and second rounds. Smith was taken in the second round by the Toronto Nationals, where he'll play alongside West Indian star Darren Sammy and fellow West Indies allrounder Kieron Pollard. The Canadian tournament will also
Ariya Jutanugarn survived a back-nine meltdown to win the 73rd US Women's Open on Sunday and claim her second career major title in a playoff. Ariya frittered away a seven-shot lead with nine holes remaining before parring the fourth playoff hole to edge South Korea's Kim Hyo-joo and become the first player from Thailand to lift the trophy. "I feel great," Ariya said. "I am really excited. I'm really honoured to join the list of winners before me." The 22-year-old from Bangkok parred all four playoff holes at the Shoal Creek, Alabama course for her second win of the 2018 LPGA Tour season to go with the Kingsmill Championship. "After you have a seven-shot lead and end up with you having to go to a playoff, I had no expectations," she said. "If I have a playoff then I'm going to make sure I do my best every shot because I felt like I didn't commit on the back nine. I felt like I had a last chance to make myself proud." She finished with a one-over par 73 and a 72-hole total of 11-under .

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed insisted he was proud of his youthful side even after an innings and 55-run defeat at Headingley denied them a Test-series victory in England. That overwhelming loss, completed inside three days on Sunday, meant the two-match campaign ended all square at 1-1 following what Sarfraz said was Pakistan's "perfect" nine-wicket victory in the first Test at Lord's. Defeat left Pakistan still looking for their first Test series success in England since 1996, when fast-bowling greats Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis were in the side. Despite skittling England out for just 184 in their first innings at Lord's, Sarfraz elected to bat after winning the toss in Leeds. While the Headingley pitch provided a typically good surface, overhead conditions quickly became humid and cloudy, creating a swing-friendly environment that made batting difficult. Even so, Pakistan would still have expected to have made more than their 174, which featured a third fifty in as many Tests ...

Leg spinner Rashid Khan carried his lethal IPL form into international cricket as Afghanistan outplayed Bangladesh by 45 runs in the opening T20 of the three-match series here tonight. Rashid came to bowl in the 11th over and put his team in a strong position straightaway by removing the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim (20) and Sabbir Rahman (0) off his first two deliveries. Bangladesh could not recover from the blow and ended at 122 all out in response to Afghanistan's 167 for eight. The 19-year-old spin sensation was on target from ball one as he found the stumps of Rahim, who failed to execute a reverse sweep. The next ball was a googly and Rahman had no idea where it was heading, trapping him plumb in front of the stumps. Rashid ended with figures of three for 13 in three overs. Bangladesh felt the pressure in the chase from ball one when the other in-form spinner Mujeeb Zadran had the experienced Tamim Iqbal leg before wicket. Spin all-rounder Mohammad Nabi (2/21) took the

Brazil star Neymar made a stunning return from injury with a superb goal in their 2-0 friendly victory over Croatia today. Just 98 days after suffering an injury he feared would keep him out of the upcoming World Cup in Russia, Neymar was back with a bang at Anfield. The Paris Saint-Germain forward appeared as a half-time replacement for Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho as the Selecao stepped up their World Cup preparations. And Neymar needed just 23 minutes to prove how important he is to Brazil's hopes of a sixth world title. Receiving a pass from Philippe Coutinho, Neymar cut into the area, beating Sime Vrsaljko and Duje Caleta-Car with impressive close control and dribbling, before burying a shot into the roof of the goal, via the crossbar, from the edge of the six-yard area. Neymar ran behind the goal, in front of Anfield's legendary Kop End, and punched the air in obvious delight as he was mobbed by team-mates. The sublime strike leaves Neymar on 54 goals for his national .
England thrashed Pakistan by an innings and 55 runs to win the second cricket Test at Headingley here today. Victory, completed inside three days, saw England level the two-match series at 1-1 after Pakistan won the first Test at Lord's by nine wickets. It was also England's first victory in a Test match since they beat the West Indies at Lord's in September, with the side having endured a winless run of six defeats in eight Tests coming into this fixture. By sharing the spoils in this short campaign, England avoided a third successive series defeat after reverses in Australia and New Zealand. Jos Buttler's blistering 80 not out today saw England to a total of 363 and commanding first-innings lead of 189. Pakistan then collapsed to 134, losing their last seven wickets for just 50 runs. Stuart Broad took three for 28 and off-spinner Dominic Bess grabbed his first wickets at Test level in a return of three for 33. The match ended when England captain Joe Root, on his Yorkshire home ...
Afghanistan overcame a mini collapse to post a competitive 167 for eight against Bangladesh in the opening T20 International of the three-match series. Wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Shahzad (40 off 37) entertained the Dehradun crowd which turned up in huge numbers to watch the first ever international game in the state. The enthusiasm amongst the fans was palpable with many walking as much as three kilometers to enter the 25,000 capacity stadium which was surrounded by a heavy security cover. There were some teething troubles at the venue which otherwise looked spick and span. The wicket played slow as expected but Shahzad picked his spots well to bludgeon five boundaries. He shared a 62-run stand for the opening wicket with Usman Ghani (26 off 24), who too hit some lusty blows. The fall of the openers triggered a middle order collapse with Afghanistan feeling the heat at 91 for four from a promising 62 for one in the ninth over. It was off-spinner Mahmudullah who removed ...
Spain's Jorge Lorenzo won the Italian MotoGP on Sunday, earning his first victory since joining Ducati last year.
Injury-hit Russia named their World Cup 23 today with their hopes of performing respectably as hosts riding on attacking duo Fyodor Smolov and Artem Dzyuba. Coach Stanislav Cherchesov has lost Spartak full-back Georgi Dzhikiya, CSKA defender Viktor Vasin and Zenit St Petersburg striker Alexander Kokorin to knee ligament injuries, while Spartak Moscow goalkeeper Alexander Selikhov has ruptured his Achilles tendon. Krasnodar forward Smolov, the Russian league's top scorer in 2016-17, who finished second in the league scorers' chart this year, will spearhead Russia's attack alongside with Dzyuba, who was loaned from Zenit St Petersburg to Arsenal Tula at the start of January. One player who seems to have recovered from injuries at the right time is midfielder Denis Cheryshev, who plays for Villarreal in the Spanish Liga. He came as a substitute as Russia lost, 1-0, to Austria in a friendly last Wednesday, and has been included in the 23. Cherchesov cut Rubin Kazan goalkeeper Soslan ...
England all-rounder Ben Stokes had been ruled out the one-day international against Scotland next weekend and the "first part" of the five-match series against Australia with a torn hamstring, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced today. Neymar made his eagerly anticipated return from injury as a half-time substitute for Brazil in their World Cup warm-up against Croatia today. Neymar had been sidelined for over three months after fracturing his foot while playing for Paris Saint-Germain against Marseille in Ligue 1 on February 25. But the 26-year-old striker has made a strong recovery and handed Brazil a pre-World Cup boost, 11 days before the start of the tournament, when he came off the bench to replace Fernandinho for the second half at Anfield. Neymar sprained his ankle and fractured his fifth metatarsal, requiring an operation which had left him facing a battle to be fit in time for Brazil's opening World Cup match with Switzerland in Rostov-on-Don on June 17. Neymar, the world's most expensive player following his blockbuster move from Barcelona last year, had spoken last month of his concerns about winning that race and described his rehabilitation as the biggest challenge of his career. He also sat out ...
