Kohli needs rest after hectic IPL and ahead of England tour: Harbhajan

Veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh feels the neck sprain which ruled Virat Kohli out of the county stint came as a blessing in disguise for him ahead of the England tour as the India captain needed rest after a hectic IPL season. "Not at all, I feel it (Virat's injury) should be okay as there is lot of time. It it good that he (Virat) is not playing county because he needs rest as IPL is a very hectic tournament, it is not that easy," Harbhajan told reporters here. "After IPL all players feel there should be a break of 15 days. So in my opinion, it is good that he (Virat) is not going to play county cricket. His body will get rest, he will recover and much better prepared for the bigger things. I am sure he is as good as a player, whether he plays county cricket or not," the 37-year-old spinner, a veteran of 103 Tests said. Harbhajan stressed that rest is essential for every cricketer. Kvitova not in favour of Serena seeding

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova insisted today that the French Open was right not to hand Serena Williams a special seeding for the event. Former world number one Williams, a three-time champion in Paris, is playing a Grand Slam for the first time since winning the Australian Open in 2017. She then stepped off tour to give birth to her daughter in September and has since played just four times this year and not at all since March. As a result the 23-time major winner's ranking has crashed to 453 in the world and she needed to use her protected ranking to enter the draw at Roland Garros. Many in tennis, including long-time rival Maria Sharapova, and outside the sport, the most vocal of whom has been Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka, believe the rule needs to be changed. But not Kvitova. "I don't really think so," said Kvitova who was off the tour for six months last year after suffering knife wounds fighting off a burglar at her home in the Czech Republic. "I know from my ...

Thailand stun China to make Uber Cup final

Thailand's women battled their way into the final of the Uber Cup today with a stunning 3-2 upset of defending champions China, with Busanan Ongbamrungphan once again emerging as the star with a nerveless last game defeat of Olympic champion Li Xuerui. To the roaring approval of the fiercely partisan home crowd, Busanan crushed Li -- who was returning from injury -- 21-11, 21-9, setting up a showdown on Saturday against top seeds Japan. Earlier Japan brushed off a challenge by South Korea 3-1. But the day belonged to the Thais, whose win sparked jubilant on court celebrations and ended a see-sawing match up with tournament favourites China. World Number 4 Ratchanok Intanon won the first singles game, grinding out a 15-21, 21-9, 21-14 win over China's Chen Yufei, who is ranked one place behind her. With crowds shouting "Thailand! Thailand!" Ratchanok hit smash after smash to come back after losing the first game to win two in a row. "I was a bit excited because every point was ...

Serena can come back and win tournaments, says Halep

World number one Simona Halep said today that she thinks Serena Williams is still capable of challenging for titles, as the American prepares to make her Grand Slam return at the French Open. Williams will be playing in her first major tournament since winning last year's Australian Open, having taken time off to give birth to her first child. Halep, a two-time runner-up in Paris, knows that despite a lack of time on court, the unseeded Williams could prove a threat. "It's great for tennis that she's back," said Halep ahead of the start of the tournament on Sunday. "Maybe she needs a little bit more time to get again used to the tournaments and everyday playing. "In my opinion... She's able to come back and to win tournaments again. "She knows how to handle the pressure, how to handle all the situations. She's (been) there for so many years. So I think she will come back and she will be good again." Williams, who opens her campaign with a first-round match against Czech Kristyna ...

With a new putter in his bag, Anirban Lahiri reeled off three birdies in a row and finished the day at a solid three-under 67 in the first round of the Fort Worth Invitational at the Colonial Country Club.
