Iyer shines in first match as captain with unbeaten 93

Fast-tracked into captaincy, young Shreyas Iyer led from the front with a scintillating 40-ball 93 as Delhi Daredevils posted a massive 219 for four against Kolkata Knight Riders in an IPL match, here today. Handed the reins of the team in a crunch time, 23-year-old Iyer, who replaced Gautam Gambhir as captain, sent the ball soaring over the ropes 10 times and hit the fence thrice in his whrilwind innings after Prithvi Shaw (62) became the youngest batsman to score a fifty in IPL. They added 68 runs for the second wicket after Shaw shared a 59-run partnership for the first wicket with Kiwi batsman Colin Munro (33). Placed at the bottom of the table, Delhi responded to the grim situation in the best possible manner as the hosts batsmen fired in unison to post their best total of the season. Iyer, dropped twice during his knock, creamed off four sixes and a four in the last over bowled by Shivam Mavi to finish the innings in style, amassing 29 runs from the last over. Compound mixed pair in bronze play-off, recurve team flops

India's compound mixed pair of Abhishek Verma and Jyothi Surekha Vennam will face Turkey in the bronze medal play-off match at the 'Stage One' of the Archery World Cup here today. The Indian duo led 117-116 against the Danish pair of Tanja Jensen and Martin Damsbo, who finally prevailed 155-154. The recurve archers once again disappointed as their mixed pair of Atanu Das and Ankita Bhagat lost to USA in the quarters and are set to return empty handed. The only hope from the season opener meet would be from the compound section. India are currently in the hunt for three bronze medals -- all from the compound sections. The compound teams in both the men's and women's sections had advanced into their respective bronze play-offs yesterday. All medal rounds in the compound team is slated for tomorrow.

Teenage shooting sensation Mehuli Ghosh, who is back home after winning a silver in the 10m air rifle event at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, said she's working hard to become the world number one. The world number six Indian may be just 17-year-old but said she has never felt under pressure. I don't see any pressure on me going by age. WADA REPORT: India are joint 6th in list of doping violations

India maintained their dubious record of being among top 10 nations with regards to doping violations being joint sixth as World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) published its report as per samples collected in 2016. But in the latest report published yesterday, India have 69 Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRV), the same as that of Russia, a country which has been under intense international scrutiny for years now. However India can take solace from the fact that they have significantly improved their position to sixth after being joint third for three years in a row. For three years in a row from 2013-15, India were ranked third in doping violations. The last report of 2015 had 117 sportspersons from the country being punished after testing positive for banned substances. Italy topped the rankings of drug cases in 2016, accounting for 147 ADRVs, followed by France (86), United States (76), Australia (75), Belgium (73).
