Arsene Wenger admitted today that the timing of his departure from Arsenal after more than two decades as manager was not his call. The 68-year-old Frenchman -- who guided the Gunners to two domestic doubles and masterminded the 2004 "Invincibles", as well as winning a record seven FA Cups -- will hand over the reins to a new manager after this season. Wenger announced on Friday he would be stepping down a year before the end of his contract after another failure to sustain a Premier League title challenge. 'Tsunami' of match-fixing in lower-level tennis: review panel
Lower-level tennis has a "tsunami"-like problem with match-fixing, according to a review panel set up to look into allegations of corruption in the sport which published its findings today. The Independent Review Panel (IRP) says there is a "very significant" corruption problem at "lower and middle levels of the sport", and especially in the men's game. The panel was set up in January 2016 following allegations made by the BBC and Buzzfeed that leading players, including Grand Slam winners, were involved in suspected match-fixing and that evidence had been suppressed. The panel -- which spoke to over 100 players and according to the BBC cost 20 million (USD 27.9 million, 22.8 million euros) to fund -- found no evidence to support those allegations. However, the highest level competitions and governing bodies did not escape criticism. Novak Djokovic suffered a surprise defeat in his latest comeback from injury after the Serb was beaten by Martin Klizan in his first match at the Barcelona Open today. Djokovic had been due to meet Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals in Spain but a disjointed display gave Klizan, ranked 140th in the world, a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 victory. Ankita Bhagat emerged as the best-placed Indian in the recurve qualifications round as she got an eighth seed, while former world number one Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das got the 10th spots in the Archery World Cup Stage 1 here today. ICC to study UK's tax exemption model for UEFA
The International Cricket Council plans to study the tax exemptions given by the UK government to UEFA for Champions League football matches in order to prepare a roadmap for future ICC tournaments. The matter was discussed at ICC's Finance & Commercial Affairs (F&CA) committee meeting here today. "The management of ICC is studying the kind of tax concessions that UK gives to UEFA for Champions League and see whether a parallel can be drawn," BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary told reporters. The BCCI reiterated its stand that it was trying to work out a solution for tax exemptions with regards to future ICC tournaments in India, like the 2021 Champions Trophy and 2023 ODI World Cup.
