Delhi, on the other hand, lost to Kings XI Punjab in their opener and then went down against Rajasthan Royals in a rain-hit match. But the Gambhir-led side bounced back in style against Mumbai with Jason Roy smashing an unbeaten 91 in his debut match for DD. CWG restored Australia's reputation after ball-tampering low: OC

The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games have restored Australia's global sporting reputation that had taken a hit during the recent ball-tampering scandal, Games Organising Committee Chairman Peter Beattie said today. "This has more than restored Australia's global reputation. Our sportsmanship on show during the Commonwealth Games is what the essence of Australia is about - fair sport, no cheating and applauding the winners," Beattie said during the daily media briefing here. Australia's sporting culture had come in for severe criticism when Steve Smith, Cameron Bancroft and David warner were found guilty of plotting and trying to tamper the ball in a Test match against South Africa in Cape Town. Smith and Warner were subsequently banned for a year and stripped of their leadership roles, while Bancroft was handed a nine-month suspension. This, after the three players offered tearful apologies for their actions, something that softened the backlash they were facing from the Australian ...

Aggressive Saina beats Sindhu to gold; Srikanth takes silver

Saina Nehwal's aggression and intensity quite literally brought top seed PV Sindhu to her knees as she ensnared the women's singles Commonwealth Games gold but K Srikanth and the debutant men's doubles pair of Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty settled for silver medals on the final day of the event here today. In an exhilarating contest, Saina won 21-18 23-21. The triumph marked a remarkable end to her CWG campaign this edition. She was the pillar of India's gold-winning campaign in the team championship earlier, playing every one of the singles matches due to Sindhu's ankle injury. She had earlier claimed the 2010 Delhi Games gold. However, in men's singles world No.1 Srikanth let slip a strong start to lose 19-21 21-14 21-14 to Malaysian icon Lee Chong Wei, who claimed the third individual gold of his career. He also has two mixed team gold medals to his name. Also ending second were Satwik and Chirag, going down to Rio Olympics bronze medallist Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge .

Scotland's Hawkins suffers collapses in marathon

Scottish runner Callum Hawkins dramatically collapsed while closing in on victory in a sweltering Commonwealth Games marathon today. In temperatures of 27 degrees C (80 F), Hawkins was leading by more than two minutes when his legs gave way and he crashed to the curb before struggling to his feet and carrying on. But he was clearly in trouble and with only about two kilometres (just over a mile) to go, he stumbled heavily into a roadside barrier, banging his head before being left lying on the ground. There was an anxious wait before any assistance reached him, by which time Australia's Michael Shelley was passing the scene en route to gold. Team Scotland said Hawkins had been taken to hospital but that "there are no major concerns at this stage".

Dead rooster warning for Bari coach Grosso

Former World Cup winner Fabio Grosso, who coaches Serie B side Bari, has revealed a dead rooster was left outside his home as a threat ahead of league game against Pescara. The bitter rivalry between the two clubs on the Italian Adriatic coast has intensified since Grosso, who lives near Pescara, took over as coach of their southern rivals last year. The intimidation intensified in the run-up to Saturday's 2-2 draw between the two clubs at Pescara's Stadio Adriatico. The outside walls of Grosso's family home in Spoltore, near Pescara, were covered with graffiti, while a rooster, which is the symbol of Bari, was found hanging lifeless at the gate. Paper bombs were also exploded outside the team hotel the night before the match, in a bid to prevent Bari players sleeping. Giovanni Loseto, a member of Grosso's coaching staff, was reported to have been threatened with baseball bats by a group of Pescara ultras. "Unfortunately, the name of Pescara has been sullied by these few ...

City title win would be 'one of the best' says Guardiola

Pep Guardiola says winning the Premier League will be one of the greatest achievements of his glittering career after Manchester City moved to the brink of the title with a stylish 3-1 win over Tottenham. Guardiola's side extended their lead over second-placed Manchester United to 16 points thanks to goals from Gabriel Jesus, Ilkay Gundogan and Raheem Sterling at Wembley. Christian Eriksen had reduced the deficit to 2-1 in the first half, but City will be crowned champions if United lose to bottom-of-the-table West Brom on Sunday. If United draw the race would also effectively be over as City would be 15 points clear with a maximum of 15 available to Jose Mourinho's team, who have a vastly inferior goal difference. A United victory would keep City's champagne on ice for a few more days at least. But a United defeat against Bournemouth in midweek or a City win over Swansea next Sunday would wrap up the silverware. Guardiola has won titles with Barcelona and Bayern Munich, while also ..

Man City on verge of title after bouncing back at Spurs, Salah hits 40 By Kieran

Manchester City moved to within touching distance of a fifth English league title after bouncing back from a bitterly disappointing week to beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Wembley. Defeat for Spurs handed Chelsea a glimmer of hope in the fight for Champions League places after they came from 2-0 down to beat Southampton 3-2, but Liverpool strengthened their position in the top four as Mohamed Salah scored his 40th goal of the season in a routine 3-0 win over Bournemouth. City blew the chance to seal the title by losing 3-2 at home to local rivals Manchester United last weekend, and were then dumped out the Champions League at the quarter-final stage 5-1 on aggregate by Liverpool in midweek. However, Pep Guardiola's men showed why they have been compared with the all-time great teams of the Premier League era by inflicting Spurs' first league defeat since the sides last met at the Etihad in December. "I said after 10-15 minutes we will be champions," said Guardiola of his side's fast ...
