CWG 2018: Boxers Amit, Naman punch their ways to semis

Indian boxers Amit Panghal and Naman Tanwar assured medals for India after booking their place in the semi-finals of their respective weight category at the ongoing 21st Commonwealth Games here on Tuesday.Amit hammered Aqeel Ahmed of Scotland 4-1 in the quarter-finals of the men's light flyweight (49 Kg) category at the prestigious quadrennial event.The Indian won the bout with decisions of 29-28, 30-27, 30-27, 28-29 and 30-27 from the five judges.Naman, other Indian in the fray, defeated Frank Masoe of Samoa in an unanimous 5-0 verdict to make it to the last-four of the men's heavyweight (91kg) category.Naman received 30-25, 30-26, 30-24, 30-24, 30-24 verdict from the five judges.India are now standing at the third spot with 20 medals, including 11 gold, four silver and five bronze.

MCA to hold elections as per new Constitution 'shortly'

The city-based Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) has adopted the new Constitution incorporating the Lodha panel reforms and elections to the cricket body will be held shortly as per the new Constitution, a senior office-bearer said today. "At the Special General Body Meeting on the seventh, we unanimously adopted the new Constitution as per the Lodha Committee. Elections will be held shortly, as per the new Constitution," MCA president Abhay Apte told PTI. It is also learnt that former BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke also attended the SGM. The Maharashtra Cricket Association has taken strides to implement the Lodha panel reforms. However, the Mumbai Cricket Association is yet to implement these reforms and has recently faced the wrath of the Bombay High Court. On April 4, the Bombay High Court had accepted the names of retired judges - H L Gokhale and V M Kanade - for appointment as administrators of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to regulate the functioning of the state cricket .

Nabi wants to shine with bat in IPL if given a chance

Sunrisers Hyderabad all-rounder Mohammad Nabi, apart from bowling, wants to contribute handsomely with the bat in the Indian Premier League. "(The) expectation is that our team will perform in the whole (entire) league. We have a new captain (in) Kane Williamson, who also played for last few years for SRH. In my opinion, my goal is to perform in batting, if I get chances and also perform in bowling," the 33-year-old right-handed batsman told PTI. Delhi govt to give Rs 14 lakh to city girl Manika for CWG gold

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia today said the Delhi government will give Rs 14 lakh to paddler Manika Batra for winning a gold medal in Table Tennis at the Commonwealth Games 2018 in Australia. He announced in the Delhi Assembly that the reward will be given to Batra under the sports policy of the government. "The Delhi government will give Rs 14 lakh to Manika Batra," the deputy chief minister told the House. Under the policy, Rs 14 lakh is given to a CWG gold medal winner, while Rs 10 lakh is given to silver medal winner, Sisodia said. He said Rs 6 lakh is given for winning bronze medal at Commonwealth Games. Speaker Ram Niwas Goel and other legislators congratulated Batra for winning the gold medal. India to counter Serbia in Serbia in Davis Cup WG Play-offs

India were today drawn to clash with fifth seed Serbia in an away Davis Cup World Group play-off tie, scheduled to be held from September 16-18, in traditional three-day five-set match format. India beat China 3-2 to make it to the World Group Play-offs in the new two-day three-set match format in Tianjin. A Novak Djokovic-less Serbia had lost 1-3 to the USA at home in the first round of the World Group in February this year. The last time India and Serbia clashed was also a World Group Play-off tie which India lost 2-3 in Bengaluru in 2014. "Countering Serbia in Serbia is always tough. FC Goa, Forca Goa Foundation launch soccer programme for kids

Professional football franchise FC Goa, in association with the Forca Goa Foundation, is launching a programme for kids. The programme, FC Goa Soccer Schools, will be launched on April 20. This specially-curated programme aims to help the development of the sport in Goa and provide opportunity to more children to take up the game, the club said. The schools will run for a period of one month - from April 20 to May 20 - for children aged between 8 and 14. FC Goa Head of Youth Development Derrick Pereira has curated a special coaching plan for the programme which aims to develop the technical ability of children interested in playing the sport. Participants will also have the opportunity to interact with players of the FC Goa squad, in addition to taking home FC Goa branded footballs and customised school kits. The programme will run from two venues in the state one each in North and South Goa. Children will be divided into three different age categories U10, U12 and U14 .

World champion Tom Daley said he was "devastated" on Tuesday as he withdrew from the 10 metres platform diving at the Commonwealth Games through injury, ending his bid for a third straight title.
