Weightlifter P Gururaja wins India's first medal at CWG

Weightlifter P Gururaja on Thursday knocked off India's medal tally at Commonwealth Games 2018, winning silver, in the 56kg category.After lifting his best weight of 111kg in the snatch, Gururaja added 138kg in his third attempt in the clean and jerk to end with a total lift of 249kg.This feat is also his personal best.In 2017, Gururaja had claimed a Commonwealth Championships bronze in Australia.Meanwhile, on Day 1 of the event, India also defeated Sri Lanka by 3-0 in the badminton mixed-team championship.

Lifter Gururaja cliams silver, opens India's CWG medal account

Weightlifter P Gururaja opened India's medal account on the first competition day of the 21st Commonwealth Games, claiming a silver in the men's 56kg category here today. The 25-year-old Gururaja equalled his personal best of 249kg (111+138) to finish second in a field where Malaysia's three-time Commonwealth Championships medallist Muhammad Izhar Ahmed (117+144) broke the Games record for snatch and overall lift. Gururaja was third after snatch, pulling off a best of 111kg after two good lifts before surviving a few nervy moments in clean and jerk. The Indian failed in his first two attempts before managing a good lift off his last chance to zoom to the top half of the table. Ahmed, meanwhile, bettered his compatriot Hamizan Amirul Ibrahim's snatch record of 116kg, created in 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. Indian women's hockey team loses 2-3 to Wales in CWG opener

India's hockey campaign was off to a disappointing start at the Commonwealth Games after the country's women's team went down 2-3 to Wales, trailing for most of the Group A clash, here today. The Indian team, chasing its first CWG medal after the 2006 Melbourne Games silver, trailed the first 30 minutes of the match, scored a couple of goals in the third period to draw level before conceding one in the dying minutes of the match to end up on the losing side. Lisa Daley (7th minute), Sian French (26th minute) and Natasha Marke-Jones (57th minute) did the scoring for Wales, while skipper Rani Rampal (34th minute) and Nikki Pradhan (41st minute) put India on the scoresheet. The Indian women's hockey team has been finishing fifth for the last two editions of the Games. India will take on Malaysia in their second group match tomorrow.

Shillong Lajong rallied from 0-2 deficit to beat FC Pune City 3-2 in a thrilling match and book a quarterfinal spot in the inaugural Super Cup football tournament here today. govt announces Rs 2L cash award each to Ker football team

Kerala government today announced a cash award of Rs two lakh each to members of the football team that won the Santhosh Trophy. Kerala defeated Bengal (4-2) in a thrilling match played at Kolkata on Sunday last. The decision to pay the cash award was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan here. The government also decided to provide jobs to 11 members of the team who now unemployed, an official release said here today. All the 20 team members and coach would be given Rs two lakh each, while the team manager, assistant coah and physiotherapist would get Rs one lakh as cash award. The government would also construct a house for team member K P Rahul, who does not have a house of his own. Former England football captain Wilkins dies aged 61

Former England, Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder Ray Wilkins died today at the age of 61, days after suffering a cardiac arrest. Wilkins, who won 84 England caps and was one of the most technically gifted players of his generation, had been treated in a London hospital since Friday. The hospital issued a statement on behalf of the family, thanking friends, colleagues and members of the public for the "many goodwill messages". Chelsea, in a Twitter post, said: "Everybody associated with Chelsea Football Club is devastated to learn of the passing of our former player, captain and assistant coach, Ray Wilkins. Rest in peace, Ray, you will be dreadfully missed."
