Shubhankar will go a long way, says Wallace

Hero Indian Open champion Matt Wallace today showered accolades on rising Indian golfer Shubhankar Sharma, saying he has the game and temperament to go a long way. "For him to achieve all the things he has done, he has been phenomenal. He has got so much talent and the things that he has done in the last couple of months have been phenomenal," Wallace said. "I've done something similar, but on a lower level. I won six times on the Alps Tour and he won twice at European Tour within a short time. I think he's going to do really well. He has got the game, he has got the head and I think he is going to go a long way." Wallace and Shubhankar were overnight joint leaders going into the final round. As the day progressed Shubhankar struggled to a three-over 75 to finish tied 7th, while the Englishman shot four-under 68 in regulation play and then overcame compatriot Andrew Johnston in the play-off to win his second European Tour title. "I'm ecstatic. I feel amazing. It was a hard week and I .

Unadkat relying on his subtle skills to prolong India stay

Young speedster Jaydev Unadkat says variations are a bowler's biggest asset in the T20 format and he is banking on that subtle skill to prolong his stay in the Indian team. Unadkat has broken into the Indian T20 team on the back of consistent performances on the domestic circuit, including the IPL. Has been doing a decent job ever since his comeback series against Sri Lanka in December. "Variations are most important for a bowler in this format. You talk about playing with the batsman's mind and you can only do that with variations," Unadkat said on eve of India's match against Sri Lanka in the Nidahas Trophy. "You can see how hard batsmen are going at us in the Powerplay in this tournament. It is up to us how we come out of it and don't allow them to hit. I back myself to do that," said the left-arm pacer, who banks on his slower balls and cutters to deceive the batsmen. In the absence of senior bowlers, Unadkat opened the bowling alongside offie Washington Sundar in the first two ...

Shubhankar struggles on final day to finish tied 7th at Hero Indian Open

It was heartbreak for Shubhankar Sharma on the final day as he struggled to a three-over 75 to finish tied seventh even as Englishman Matt Wallace bagged his second European Tour title at the USD 1,750,000 Hero Indian Open here today. Wallace, who stayed in contention throughout the week, overcame compatriot Andrew Johnston in the play-off, 18th hole, to clinch his first Indian Open title and take home the winner's cheque of USD 291,660. This title means a world to me. It has been very satisfying week because it is definitely the toughest golf course that I have played in my career. I have learnt a lot and hopefully it will help me in future, said Wallace after the win. Everything went wrong for overnight joint leader Shubhankar today at the challenging DLF golf course as he found bushes, water bodies, hit the flag once and also struggled with his putting to drop three double bogeys, three bogeys against six birdies to total four-under 284. AITA ignores Bopanna's reservation, pairs him with Paes

Sending out a strong message that it won't allow players to interfere in selection matters, the AITA today brought back old warhorse Leander Paes in the Davis Cup team despite "reservations" from seasoned campaigner Rohan Bopanna. The five-member selection committee named Yuki Bhambri, Ramkumar Ramanathan, Sumit Nagal, Bopanna and Paes apart from including left-handed Divij Sharan as a reserve member in the side. Purav Raja, who performed below-par against Canada in the World Group Play-Off tie, was predictably dropped from the squad. According to sources in the AITA, non-playing captain Mahesh Bhupathi had written to the chairman of the selection committee that senior pro Bopanna had expressed wish to "sit out" of the China tie, to allow Paes get his Davis Cup world record, effectively conveying that he was not willing to pair up with the legend for this tie. The selectors though have included both Bopanna and Paes in the team, leaving the ball in Bopanna's court to decide whether he

Rohit's form a worry for India ahead of Lanka clash

Skipper Rohit Sharma will be desperate to get back to form as a resurgent India look to set their record straight against hosts Sri Lanka in the third match of the Nidahas Tri-Series, here tomorrow. The stand-in skipper, possibly the most prolific white ball player after regular leader Virat Kohli, has gone off the boil since the start of the South Africa series. He will like to score heavily to get his confidence back as he frets on whether he could give Rishabh Pant another game in the tournament. Touted as Dhoni's successor, Pant is yet to do justice to his immense potential till now. With someone like KL Rahul waiting for his chance, time is running out for the burly youngster from Rourkee. Rahul's presence gives his skipper an option to use him as an opener and himself come at No 4, dropping Pant from the XI. It was not a perfect start for India's second string squad in the tournament as they lost by five wickets against the hosts in the opening match. But the Sharma-led side ...
