After the historic Asia Cup victory in November last year, the Indian women's hockey team has set out for its first tour of the year, to Korea. The 20-member squad, led by Rani along with vice captain Sunita Lakra, today left for Jinchun, Korea where they will play a five-match series with the hosts starting March 5. Under the watchful eyes of chief coach Harendra Singh, the India team was based out of the Sports Authority of India, Bengaluru where 34 players were part of the national camp that focused on fitness, speed and skill development. While the players will compete in Korea between March 5 to 11, the remaining members of the camp will continue to train ahead of their preparations for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Six Indian shooters, including Jitu Rai, Apurvi Chandela and Mehuli Ghosh, will be in fray on the first competition day of the season's first ISSF World Cup in the Mexican city of Guadalajara tomorrow. Two finals are lined up on the opening day of the Combined World Cup where the rifle, pistol and shotgun shooters will compete. The men's 10m air pistol will see Rai, Om Prakash Mitherwal and Shazar Rizvi carry the Indian hopes in the qualification stages while Apurvi, Mehuli and Anjum Moudgil will fight it out in women's 10m air rifle, the second medal event of the day. India will face Pakistan in the summit clash of the IBSF World Cup Team Snooker event after the pair of Pankaj Advani and Manan beat the Iran side 3-2 here today. Advani and Chandra won their single matches but the duo went down in the doubles frame. Then, Advani fell short against Amir Sarkhosh to bring about the decider. Junior national selection chief Venkatesh Prasad resigns
Former India seamer Venkatesh Prasad today tendered his resignation from the post of chairman, junior national selection committee, less than a month after the country won the U-19 World Cup. Prasad, who has worked as the head of the junior national selection committee for 30 months, of late shared a cold relationship with the BCCI mandarins. It has been learnt that Prasad cited personal reasons for stepping down and has also mentioned that he doesn't want to fall under the purview of 'Conflict of Interest'.
