Man Utd set to make Sanchez highest-paid EPL player - reports

Manchester United are set to land Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal by making him the Premier League's highest paid player, according to several reports today. The Chilean striker would earn between 400,000 and 500,000 pounds ($555,000 and $690,000) a week before tax by moving to Old Trafford, according to The Sun, the Daily Telegraph and other newspapers. The 29-year-old's wage demands are said to have scared off Manchester City and Chelsea, leaving United as his main suitors. The Daily Telegraph reported that United have offered Sanchez a four-and-a-half-year contract and he would move for a 30 million transfer fee -- it is relatively low because he could leave for free at the end of the summer. The deal for the former Barcelona player would also likely involve a 20 million signing-on fee and a 10 million agent's fee. The Sun reports however that Arsenal could still refuse to allow Sanchez to leave if they do not find a replacement. However, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger at ..

Sri Lanka sweat over Mathews fitness ahead of Bangladesh ODI

Skipper Angelo Mathews is doubtful for Sri Lanka's second one-day international in the tri-nation tournament in Bangladesh after the allrounder sustained a suspected injury today. Mathews, who was in action during Sri Lanka's opening loss to Zimbabwe on Wednesday, was under observation ahead of the crucial game against the hosts on Friday. "I think he had hurt his hamstring. We are not sure if it's hamstring or cramping and (we're) waiting for the specialist's verdict," batting coach Thilan Samaraweera told reporters in Dhaka. Mathews, who returned as the team's limited-overs captain ahead of the tri-series, made a valiant 42 before the islanders went down to Zimbabwe by 12 runs. It was Sri Lanka's fourth defeat against the southern African side in the last six matches. The struggling team won only five of their 29 50-over matches in 2017. Djokovic calls for ATP Tour Finals to move around

Novak Djokovic called for the ATP Tour Finals to travel from their London base Thursday, saying they were a big asset that should be exploited more. In its current format, the elite season-ending tournament has been held in the British city since 2009. But with the announcement that Shenzhen in China will host the WTA Finals from 2019, with prize money doubled to $14 million, the Serb said it made sense for the men's event to also cash in. "I mean, that's a big success for WTA, for all the female players. They deserve it. No doubt about it," he said at the Australian Open. "When it comes down to World Tour Finals, for us and the ATP, London has been a great success for us." But Djokovic, who is president of the ATP Tour player council, added that it may be time for the event to now "travel". "Because it's just probably the biggest leverage that we have. I mean, outside Grand Slams, ATP is obviously not behind Grand Slams. This is the biggest event that ATP has," he ...

Billie Jean melts the ice queen Sharapova

Maria Sharapova says she has been inspired by Billie Jean King's story to change her ice queen act and be a positive influence for younger players. She admits her demeanour may have been selfish in the past, but says that could be about to change after being invited by King to the premier of the "Battle of the Sexes" movie. "Billie Jean invited me to the opening in LA. I went to see it. I enjoyed it," Sharapova said at the Australian Open on Thursday. "She taught me that my example ultimately is an example for the generation to come." Former Australian player Jelena Dokic claimed in a newspaper column Thursday that Sharapova had no friends on tour, swapped few encouraging words with younger players and her doping ban would not have increased her popularity in the locker room. "I think I realised that," said Sharapova. "It didn't come to me so fast. Tennis is a very selfish sport. You have a team around you that do everything just for you in order for you to win. "And ...
