Zero preparation for SA, India wasted time playing SL: Bedi

Former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi is not at all surprised with the current team's surrender in South Africa as he feels Virat Kohli's men went into the series without serious preparation and "wasted time" playing against Sri Lanka. The 135-run defeat in Centurion today ended India's nine-Test series winning run as South Africa took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match rubber. India had hammered Sri Lanka in a full series at home before departing for South Africa. The series was arranged within three months of the away assignment in Sri Lanka where India blanked the hosts. When asked about India's preparation for South Africa tour, Bedi came up with a stinging response. "There was no preparation. We wasted our time with the Sri Lankans. There was no sense in playing a weak team for one and a half month when we should be preparing for South Africa," Bedi told PTI. "It was supposed to be a tough tour and it required intense preparation. You beat Sri Lanka in Sri

India blown away again, concede series to South Africa

Indomitable at home, India's batsmen capitulated in the face of South Africa's menacing pace attack to suffer a 135-run drubbing in the second Test here today, ending a nine-series unbeaten run for Virat Kohli's world No.1 side. After the 72-run loss in the opening Test, the margin got bigger here as the visitors handed the home side a 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Rohit Sharma's 47 was the lone noteworthy contribution in a chase of 287, which was a tall ask from the very beginning given the unpredictable bounce of the pitch. The Indians folded for 151 in 50.2 overs, never really offering a fight. Debutant Lungi Ngidi was the newest fast-bowling nemesis that India discovered as he snared six scalps for a mere 39 runs in 12.2 overs. Ngidi collected the man of the match award for his phenomenal debut show, which also included the prized wicket of Kohli in the second innings. It was a revenge of sorts for Faf du Plessis' men, who had been blanked 3-0 by hosts India in

Two Koreas in talks on Winter Olympics athletes

North Korea has offered to send more than 200 cheerleaders to the Winter Olympics in the South and attend the Paralympics, Seoul said as the two Koreas met today to discuss athlete numbers in the latest in a flurry of cross-border talks. Nuclear-armed Pyongyang agreed last week to send athletes, high-level officials, performers and others to next month's Pyeongchang Games, taking place just 80 kilometres south of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that divides the peninsula. Seoul has long sought to proclaim the event a "peace Olympics" in the face of tensions over the North's weapons programmes -- which have seen it subjected to multiple UN Security Council sanctions -- and the discussions represent a marked improvement. "Inter-Korean relations have been strained for almost 10 years," the North's chief delegate Jon Jong-Su said as the meeting started on the southern side of the border truce village of Panmunjom. "We hope that ties can open," he added. Three officials from ...

Mumbai City FC look for revenge against Bengaluru FC

Beaten and bruised in their last home game, Mumbai City FC will look to defeat Bengaluru FC when the two sides clash here tomorrow in an Indian Super League (ISL) encounter. A win on their home turf will ease pressure on Mumbai, currently placed on the fifth spot with as many as four wins in 10 games. Also, the home side will be keen to seek revenge as they had faced a 2-0 drubbing from Bengaluru in Bengaluru on November 19. But the home team will face a tough challenge from the Bengaluru boys who have an inspirational player in Sunil Chhetri, known to turn things around, and they, too, would be keen to taste victory at the Mumbai Football Arena in suburban Andheri. Bengaluru are presently placed on the second spot with six wins from 10 matches, while the season has been a mixed bag for Mumbai. But the visitors had lost to Delhi Dynamos 2-0 in their last game and would look to come back to winning ways from this game. Likewise, in the last home game, Mumbai were drubbed

Fighting Tsonga digs deep to reel in Shapovalov

Former winner Jo-Wilfried Tsonga fought to the bitter end to overhaul rising Canadian youngster Denis Shapovalov in a five-set thriller at the Australian Open today. The 15th seeded Tsonga looked dead and buried down 2-5 in the final set before 18-year-old Shapovalov faltered in only his second five-setter and the experienced Frenchman seized the initiative. Tsonga, 32, stormed into the third round after a 3-6, 6- 3, 1-6, 7-6 (7/4), 7-5 win in 3hr 37min on Margaret Court Arena and will now face either Australian 17th seed Nick Kyrgios or Serbia's Viktor Troicki. It ended his three-match losing run in five-setters, but lifted his career record to 16-10 and reversed his loss to Shapovalov in straight sets in the second round at last year's US Open. "Since the start I was behind him. I had to fight a lot and make him finish the match. He never did, so it's good for me," Tsonga said. "But the most important (thing) for me, it's to fight, give my best on court until the last
