Southee entertains for New Zealand but Lakmal keeps Sri Lanka on top

Tim Southee led a rollicking New Zealand fightback Wednesday but a five-wicket strike by Suranga Lakmal ensured Sri Lankan held the honours at tea on day one of the deciding second Test on Wednesday. Southee was dismissed shortly before the interval for 68, after a 108-run stand for the seventh wicket with BJ Watling. Lakmal quickly removed his replacement Neil Wagner as New Zealand ended the second session at 175 for eight. Watling, so often called upon by his country to repair a mangled innings, was unbeaten on 46. Southee joined Watling with New Zealand in serious trouble at 64 for six after Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bowl on a green wicket with a heavy cloud cover. Lakmal decimated the top order with a burst of four for 11 during the opening session while Lahiru Kumara engineered two further wickets soon after lunch. Agarwal stays solid on debut, India take lunch at 57 for one

Making a confident start to his Test career, opener Mayank Agarwal took India to 57 for one at lunch on the opening day of the third match against Australia at the MCG, here on Wednesday. Cheteshwar Pujara (10) was unbeaten alongside Agarwal (34 off 68 balls) after India lost make-shift opener Hanuma Vihari (8). This was after India won the toss and opted to bat on a docile pitch, putting its sixth opening pairing in 2018, and fifth in 11 overseas Tests this year. But it proved effective as Vihari and Agarwal put on 40 runs after batting out 18.5 overs, India's longest opening stand in terms of balls faced in Test cricket across Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa since December 2010 when Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir had batted out 29.3 overs against the Proteas at Centurion. Agarwal - brought in after failure of KL Rahul and Murali Vijay - batted with confidence, mostly playing with straight bat and treating the balls on merit. The pitch turned out to be a batting .

There is a bigger goal than just breaking records: Steyn

South African fast bowler Dale Steyn is on the verge of making the record of being the highest Test wicket-taker for his country but the 35-year-old says that he has set bigger goals for himself.Steyn, who is all set to play in the Boxing Day Test match against Australia, has 421 Test wickets in his kitty and is just one wicket short from replacing former bowling all-rounder Shaun Pollock to be the most successful Test bowler for his country."I have a lot more wickets in me than just one more. I haven't saved myself just to take one more wicket than Polly (Pollock). There is a bigger goal at the end of the day," ICC quoted Steyn, as saying."I do think it will be a beautiful thing to happen if it happens. It has taken a long time and these records are great things to achieve. I will be highly honoured, but I will get back to my mark and try to take the next one," he added. The right-arm bowler had equalled Pollock's record in his 88th Test, which he played against Sri Lanka in July ...

Du Plessis backs Amla to regain

Struggling South African batting star Hashim Amla will return to his number three position in the first Test against Pakistan, starting at SuperSport Park on Wednesday, with the full backing of captain Faf du Plessis. "Hash has been our rock at number three," said Du Plessis ahead of a series featuring two strong bowling attacks and two potentially fragile batting line-ups. Du Plessis acknowledged that Amla, 35, had slipped from his previous high standards, scoring only 444 runs at an average of 23.36 since his last century, against Bangladesh in October 2017. Amla was moved down to number four in the order for South Africa's most recent Test, against Sri Lanka in Colombo in July, with Theunis de Bruyn filling the number three slot and making a century. "There was a reason for that," said Du Plessis. "In Sri Lanka we needed that (Amla) experience against the spin and we felt it was easier for Theunis as a new player to come in when the ball was still a little bit harder." But Du ...
