Ajay Rohera creates world record for highest first-class debut score

Rookie Madhya Pradesh opener Ajay Rohera on Saturday etched his name in the record books by slamming the highest first-class score on debut, an unbeaten 267 against Hyderabad in their Ranji Trophy Elite Group B game here. 21-year-old Rohera's 267 not out is a world record. The record was earlier held by former Mumbai stalwart Amol Mazumdar, who had hit 260 versus Haryana at Faridabad in 1994. Mazumdar took to Twitter to congratulate the young batsman. Courtesy Rohera's 345-ball knock, which comprised 21 fours and five sixes, Madhya Pradesh declared their first-innings at a mammoth 562/4 in response to Hyderabad's first innings score of 124. Madhya Pradesh bowlers then gave Rohera a winning gift by bundling out Hyderabad for 185 in their second essay for an emphatic innings and 253 run victory. The right-handed wicket-keeper batsman also had another reason to celebrate as he became the highest individual scorer for Madhya Pradesh surpassing J P Yadav's 265.

Pakistan's Ammad Butt let-off with reprimand, to play against Holland

In a major relief for Pakistan, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has let-off vice-captain Ammad Butt with a reprimand for carelessly running into a Malaysian player during its last match, which means the striker is eligible to play in its crucial last Pool D match against Netherlands on Sunday. Pakistan's campaign at the ongoing men's hockey World Cup went from bad to worse after the team suffered a twin blow Thursday. While skipper Muhammad Rizwan Sr was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament with an injury, his deputy Butt was banned for their last Pool D match against Netherlands because of a serious on-field offence against Malaysia's Faizal Saari. The suspension was, however, revoked after Pakistan appealed against it with the FIH stating that Butt's offence was not "reckless" but a "careless" one. The suspension was invoked on Butt after Malaysia's coach Roelant Oltmans lodged an official complaint with the tournament's Technical Delegate Christian Deckenbrock of .

Pujara's first innings is a blueprint for first Test: Travis Head

Australia batsman Travis Head feels India Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara has set an example for others with his first-innings century, calling his gritty knock a "blueprint" on this pitch. Taking a leaf out of Pujara's book, Head scored a 167-ball 72 to steer Australia to 235 on the third day of first Test here Saturday. Head helped score 44 runs in the rain-affected first session on Saturday as Australia just about managed to close the gap after Pujara had produced a superb 123 on the opening day to guide India to 250 in their first innings. "The way Pujara played in the first innings was the blueprint for this wicket," Head, who was born in Adelaide, told reporters. "He had a really good leaving game, good forward defence, and as the ball got softer, he got more runs. Knowing how hard the wicket can be with the ball moving and the new ball, he played really well." Head was left disappointed after being caught behind for 72 off Mohammed Shami just when his partnership with Nathan .

Ashwin will play crucial role with rough being created: Bumrah

Nathan Lyon has been using the rough patches effectively during the ongoing Indian second innings which is an indicator that Ravichandran Ashwin will have a bigger role to play during Australian second innings, reckons pacer Jasprit Bumrah. India are currently 166 runs ahead with seven wickets in hand and two days of play left in the first Test. "Ashwin will obviously play a more crucial now role because with the rough, we saw Nathan Lyon using the rough to his advantage. He is an experienced bowler and knows what he has to do. So he will probably work on it and he will play a crucial role for sure," Bumrah said at the end of the second day's play. India dismissed Australia for 235 in their first innings and it was a collective effort from the bowlers, who shared the spoils. "We were trying to figure out the lengths that are useful over here. In South Africa and England, there was a lot of lateral movement. Here the wickets are slightly flatter because you get bounce, but you have to .

India stay firmly ahead despite Kohli's late dismissal

The sun took a break but India shone to stay ahead of Australia in the opening Test after sporadic rain intrusions, K L Rahul's enterprise and Cheteshwar Pujara's obduracy culminated in a 166-run lead here Saturday. Virat Kohli was dismissed late in the final session as India reached 151 for three at stumps on day three at the Adelaide Oval. The Indian skipper lunged forward to defend off Nathan Lyon (1-48) but was caught at short leg for an uncharacteristic knock of 34 (104 balls). At close of play, Cheteshwar Pujara was unbeaten on 40 runs, while Ajinkya Rahane was batting on 1 not out. India led by 166 runs. Post tea, Kohli and Pujara took their third-wicket partnership to 71 runs, albeit it was low on strike-rate, coming off 197 balls. At the other end, Kohli became the fourth Indian batsman after Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Rahul

Serena Williams could have taken my name to strengthen gender disparity case: John McEnroe

Months after the bitter-sweet memory of the US Open, former world number one John McEnroe is 'surprised' that American tennis ace Serena Williams didn't refer to his name to strengthen her case of alleged gender disparity.Williams drew widespread support and criticism for her dramatic meltdown at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, as she labelled umpire Carlos Ramos a "liar" and a "thief" and claimed sexism after she received three code violations. Sport24 quoted McEnroe, who was famously disqualified from the 1990 Australian Open after a meltdown of his own. While responding to Williams' meltdown, McEnroe said: "If thief is the worst word she used, I have got some bad news for you. There are a lot of ...

If cricket has Joyce brothers, hockey owns Gleghornes

Brothers Mark and Paul Gleghorne are to hockey what Ed and Dom Joyce are to cricket, with a common Ireland and England connection. The Gleghorne brothers are the epitome of hockey's sibling rivalry. While Ed is a more famous name having played cricket for both Ireland and England, Dom represented Ireland in only three One-Day Internationals. Similarly, in hockey the more ambitious Mark shifted allegiance to England in 2008 and had to serve a cooling-off period for three years before being eligible to represent his adopted country. Paul, on the other hand, stayed loyal to his native country. On Friday, one of the brothers - Paul - was left heartbroken after his elder brother Mark scored late for England to sent Ireland packing from the ongoing men's hockey World Cup with a 4-2 result in a must-win final Pool B match. For Mark, it was business as usual and emotions hardly had any place on the turf. "It was a bloody tough match. It was an excellent game from both sides. It was end-to-end
