It's long journey ahead for young Nihal: Chess great Anand

Indian chess great Viswanathan Anand sees signs of greatness in Nihal Sarin but says it's a long journey ahead for the impressive 14-year-old since there has been a trend of players struggling to replicate success as they age. Sarin did exceedingly well by forcing a draw with five-time World Champion Anand in the eighth round of the Tata Steel Chess Rapid tournament here. Currently ranked world number one in the U14 category, Sarin finished the rapid section of the tournament with just three points with six draws and three defeats but impressed with the calm manner in which he tackled the pressure of playing some of the biggest stars of the game. "Going by the evidence so far, I would not rule it out (Nihal becoming a world champion in future). It's a long journey forward," Anand told PTI in an interview. "At the end, he is just 14. I felt that he would really struggle in this tournament and he would be a bit out of place. It seemed the opposite. He seemed quite comfortable here. Not

India eye semifinals spot in Women's World T20

Eyeing a semi-finals berth, overwhelming favourites India will have to guard against complacency when they play Ireland in their third Group B match of the ICC Women's World T20 here on Thursday. India are on a roll having convincingly won their first two matches, including against arch-rivals Pakistan two days ago. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur declared open the tournament with her blazing hundred against New Zealand at the Providence, the same venue where India will face Ireland. Ireland, on the other hand, have lost to both Australia and Pakistan. India will enter the game against the Irish as overwhelming favourites but Kaur is aware that her team cannot afford to take things for granted in this mega-event. Rooney excited to see what 'fearless' England are capable of

Wayne Rooney will make his final farewell as England's greatest ever goalscorer in a friendly against the United States on Thursday, but is excited at what a young squad can achieve under "fearless" coach Gareth Southgate in the years to come. Rooney, 33, made the last of his 119 international appearances midway through England's World Cup qualifying campaign two years ago. In contrast to his prime when a "golden generation" disappointed at major tournaments and never made it beyond the quarter-finals, Southgate's charges surpassed expectations by making it to the semi-finals of a World Cup for the first time in 28 years in Russia. "Fearless," said Rooney when asked what set Southgate apart from the other five England managers he played under. "Because a lot of the other managers didn't really give the youth the opportunity to express themselves and come into the team and have an impact." Rooney insisted he has no regrets on retiring from international football a year before the World

'The facts are not right': Federer fumes over scheduling row

Roger Federer has hit back at claims he gets preferential treatment from tennis tournaments due to his status as one of the sport's all-time greats. Federer was responding to controversial comments from French veteran Julien Benneteau, who said the 20-Grand Slam champion was able to use his reputation to secure favourable scheduling. Benneteau offered Federer's matches at the last two Australian Opens as evidence, suggesting the Swiss star was granted his preference to play in the evening session to avoid the blistering Melbourne heat. "Over the last two Australian Opens, he played 14 matches, because he was champion and finalist. And he played 12 or 13 of them in the night session," Benneteau told France's RMC Sport recently. "On the same day Federer played Jan-Lennard Struff, Novak Djokovic played Gael Monfils. "Any tournament director would put Djokovic-Monfils on the night session at 7:30pm, right? But no. They played at 2:30pm, in 104 degrees. And Federer-Struff played at ...

Bleeding on lungs sees Aussie paceman Hastings retire

Australian fast bowler John Hastings has retired from all forms of cricket fearing a mystery ailment could lead him to bleed to death on the field. The burly all-rounder, who has represented his country in all three formats of the game, revealed last month he was struggling with an illness that causes him to cough up blood whenever he bowls. He first noticed the issue several years ago and despite a battery of tests and operations is no closer to knowing why it happens. "It's (only) when I bowl. The pressure at the crease, little blood vessels in my lungs burst," he told The Age newspaper in Melbourne on Wednesday. "That determines that I cough up blood on a regular basis when I'm trying to bowl. It's a really scary thing." The 33-year-old, who was planning to play in Australia's Twenty20 Big Bash League next month, said he was otherwise healthy. His decision to pull the pin came after doctors were unable to reassure him that he wouldn't bleed to death on the cricket pitch. "I'm ...

World Cup finalists Croatia keen to avoid another 'slap' from Spain

Having finally shaken off their World Cup hangover, finalists Croatia are aiming for their first Nations League victory when they face Spain on Thursday, the side who inflicted a 6-0 drubbing in September. Coach Zlatko Dalic has named a 25-man squad, including three new faces, to face Spain at Zagreb's Maksimir stadium and England on November 18 at Wembley. "I'm focused on the match against 'La Furia (Roja)', we need that victory," Dalic said earlier this month. "I know that many people do not believe that our team is capable of winning both games but I reply -- we will do now as we did in Russia, step by step. "First, Spain," he told the Jutarnji List newspaper. Croatia, a country of 4.2 million people, reached the World Cup final for the first time, inspired by playmaker Luka Modric, and despite losing 4-2 to France Dalic and his players were welcomed home as heroes. But only two months later "Vatreni" -- Croatian for "Fiery Ones" -- suffered the humiliation of the thrashing by ...

Anderson hammers Nishikori in ATP Finals humiliation

Kevin Anderson handed Japan's Kei Nishikori a humiliating 6-0, 6-1 thrashing at the ATP Finals as the South African moved to the brink of a semi-final berth on Tuesday. Anderson won the first 11 games and needed only 64 minutes to demolish the woeful Nishikori in a remarkably one-sided group stage clash at London's O2 Arena. The 32-year-old's place will be secure if Thiem beats Roger Federer, or if Federer defeats Thiem in three sets later on Tuesday. It was a landmark moment for Wimbledon finalist Anderson, who has set a new career-high of 47 victories in a calender year. He will rarely have had such an easy outing as this one throughout his memorable 2018.
