The government on Wednesday increased the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP), the minimum price that mills have to pay to sugarcane growers, by Rs 10 to Rs 315 per quintal for the 2023-24 season starting October. The decision to increase the FRP of sugarcane was taken in the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The FRP of sugarcane has been fixed at Rs 315 per quintal for the 2023-24 season. "The Cabinet has increased the FRP of sugarcane to Rs 315 per quintal for 2023-24. Last year, FRP of sugarcane was Rs 305 per quintal," Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur told reporters after the cabinet meeting. The Prime Minister has always been with "annadata". The government has given priority to agriculture and the farmers, he said. The FRP of sugarcane, which stood at Rs 210 per quintal in 2014-15 season, has now been increased to Rs 315 per quintal for 2023-24 season, he added.

Minister for Sugarcane Development and Sugar Mills Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary said the Uttar Pradesh government will ensure that sugar mills pay the dues of sugarcane farmers within a week. "At present, sugarcane farmers in 105 sugar mills of the state are getting payment within 10 days," he told reporters on Sunday. Hitting out at the opposition parties, Chaudhary said, "During previous governments, ensuring prompt payment to sugarcane farmers was considered a difficult task." He informed that over Rs 2.04 lakh crore had been paid to the farmers for their sugarcane produce within a period of six years. The minister said Rs 21,620 crore had been paid till March 31 against the crushing of 930 crore tonnes of sugarcane this season. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Wednesday announced a Rs 10 per quintal hike in sugarcane price, raising the crop's rate to Rs 372 a quintal. The new price will come into force from the current crushing season. Khattar said that safeguarding the interest of farmers is the utmost priority of the state government. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday announced increasing the price of sugarcane to Rs 380 per quintal from the existing Rs 360 per quintal. He announced a hike in SAP (state agreed price) of sugarcane on the floor of the Punjab Assembly on the concluding day of its brief session. In August 2021, the then Congress government had announced a Rs 50 per quintal hike in SAP of sugarcane to Rs 360 per quintal.
