Suresh Raina is an Indian cricketer who bats left-handed and bowls off-spin occasionally. He is counted among India’s best fielders and is the first of the three batsmen to ever score a century in all three formats of International cricket. Raina was part of the 2004 India U-19 World Cup side, in which he scored 3 fifties, including a 38-ball 90. He was the captain of Gujarat Lions in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and vice-captain of his current IPL franchise, Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He also captained the Indian cricket team in the limited-overs cricket and was the second-youngest player ever to do so.

 

ODI career

 

Suresh Raina made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Sri Lanka at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on June 30, 2005. After a stupendous start to his career, his form saw a drop after a serious injury. Following India’s 2007 ODI World Cup debacle and Raina’s superb performance in the inaugural IPL, he made a comeback in the Indian national cricket side. Thereafter, Raina never looked back and sealed his spot as a finisher. Raina showed his big-match temperament during India’s ICC World Cup 2011 campaign. In his ODI career, he has scored 5,615 runs in 226 matches at an average of 35.31, with five centuries and 36 fifties. In 2017, Raina lost his spot in the Indian team and was dropped from the Annual Retainership of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).


IPL career


Suresh Raina was bagged by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 2.6 crore in the first IPL season. Raina played important knocks for CSK in the absence of big players like Mathew Hayden, Michael Hussey and Jacob Oram. After that, he became an integral part of the CSK batting line-up. In 193 matches, the southpaw has scored 5,368 runs at an average of 33.34 at a strike rate of 137.14, along with a century and 38 fifties. While bowling, he has so far taken 25 wickets at an average of 44.72 and an economy rate of 7.38. During CSK’s 2-year ban, Gujarat Lions bought Raina and appointed him their captain.

 

T20I career

 

Suresh Raina made his T20 International (T20) debut against South Africa at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on December 1, 2006. In 78 matches, he scored 1,604 runs at an average of 29.16 at a strike rate of 134.79, with a century and 5 fifties.

 

Test career

 

Suresh Raina made hsi Test debut against Sri Lanka at Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on July 26, 2010. He was the 12th Indian player to score a century on debut. His Test career spanned 18 Tests in which he scored 768 runs at an average of 26.48, with a century and 7 fifties.
