We'll fulfil deal with Turkey on NATO, says Sweden's top diplomat

Sweden's center-right government will fulfil all requirements under a deal with Turkey to join NATO and will concentrate external relations to its immediate neighbourhood while dropping the previous administration's feminist foreign policy," the country's top diplomat said on Monday. Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrm said the new government shares Turkey's concern about the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which is considered a terrorist organisation in Turkey, Europe and the United States. There will be no nonsense from the Swedish government when it comes to the PKK, Billstrm told the Associated Press in an interview. We are fully behind a policy which means that terrorist organisations don't have a right to function on Swedish territory. Turkey stalled Sweden and Finland's historic bid to join NATO over concerns that the two countries - Sweden in particular - had become a safe haven for members of the PKK and affiliated groups. Sweden moves closer to NATO, lifts 2019 arms embargo on Turkey

Would-be NATO member Sweden on Friday announced it will allow exports of arms to Turkey, which had threatened to block the Scandinavian nation's application to join the 30-member defence alliance. The decision means that Sweden, which has sought NATO membership along with neighbouring Finland, will lift an arms embargo it had imposed on Ankara in 2019 after Turkey's military operation against the Kurdish militia known as the YPG in Syria. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had threatened to block the Nordic pair's membership, insisting they change their stance on Kurdish rebel groups that Turkey considers terrorists and lift the arms embargo on Turkey. NATO operates by consensus so Turkey needs to approve. Sweden's application for membership in NATO greatly strengthens the defence and security policy reasons for granting the export of military equipment to other member states, including Turkey, the Inspectorate for Strategic Products, a Swedish administrative authority, said in

Populist leader Jimmie Akesson's right-wing party wins Sweden election

Sweden's center-left Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson on Wednesday conceded defeat in a weekend election while the leader of a nationalist anti-immigration party declared victory for his right-wing bloc. Jimmie Akesson, leader of the populist Sweden Democrats, said his party would be "a constructive and driving force in this work of rebuilding safety in Swe den. He said it was time to put Sweden first. With almost all votes counted, the right-wing bloc of four parties that includes the Sweden Democrats the country's second-largest party appeared to have won a thin majority in parliament. Though a few votes were outstanding they were not enough to sway the final outcome. Prime Minister Andersson said that the the preliminary result is clear enough to draw a conclusion that her center-left forces had lost power. Andersson became Sweden's first female prime minister last year and led the country in its historic bid to join NATO following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The Sweden .

Swedish conservatives close to election win with 21% votes amid crime fears

Near final results in Sweden's election show that a bloc of right-wing parties was expected to defeat a left-wing bloc headed by Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson. The conservative group includes a populist anti-immigration party that made its best ever showing. However, the result was so close that the election authority said on Sunday it would not be known before Wednesday when some uncounted votes, including those cast abroad, have been tallied. According to the early count, Andersson's ruling left-wing Social Democrats won 30.5 per cent of the vote, more than any other party. However a bloc of four left-wing parties appeared to fall short as a whole of winning a majority of votes in the 349-seat parliament, or Riksdag. Exit polls had initially predicted a narrow victory for Andersson's camp but as the evening wore on, and the vote count supplanted the exit poll, the results tipped in favor of the conservatives. Early Monday, the conservatives appeared to have 176 seats to 173

Sweden: Two wounded in shopping centre shooting; suspect arrested

Swedish police say two people have been wounded in a shooting at a shopping centre in the southern city of Malmo. A suspected was arrested after the shooting Friday afternoon at the Emporia shopping center, which police said appeared to be gang-related. Police are on site with big resources to map the incident by interviewing witnesses and going through material from surveillance cameras. The immediate danger to the public appears to be over, Malmo police said. Shootings by criminal gangs have become a growing problem in Sweden in recent decades, including in Malmo, the country's third-biggest city. Gang violence is among the main campaign issues ahead of Sweden's national election on Sept. 11. Last month a gunman opened fire inside a shopping mall across the Oresund Strait in the Danish capital, Copenhagen. Three people were killed and four wounded. Police said the suspect in that shooting, a 22-year-old Dane, apparently selected his victims at random.
