Tamil Nadu rains: NDRF, IAF collaborate to rescue stranded train passengers

Work to rescue about 800 passengers stranded at Srivaikuntam in southern Tamil Nadu is 'going on' and the exercise will be completed as soon as possible, an official said on Tuesday. Elsewhere, the Army assisted evacuation of people from flood-hit areas and provided them medical care. Though rainfall activity has almost come to a halt in most parts of southern Tamil Nadu, the inundation is still heavy, which continues to affect normalcy. A railway official here said the NDRF, Air Force, railway and local authorities are coordinating the rescue work. The passengers, stranded since early hours of Monday, spent the night in train coaches at Srivaikuntam railway station. Initially, 300 were housed in a nearby school and the others stayed at Srivaikuntam railway station. On Monday night, troops assisted rescue of over 100 people, which includes 54 women, a pregnant lady and 19 children near Thoothukudi. A sessions court here on Friday extended Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji's remand till January 4, 2024 in a money laundering case. Principal Sessions Judge S Alli, before whom Senthil Balaji was produced by the prosecution through video-conferencing from the central prison here, extended his judicial custody till January 4. Balaji was arrested on June 14 by the ED in connection with a money laundering case linked to a cash-for-jobs scam when he was the Transport Minister during an earlier AIADMK regime.

Tamil Nadu software exports hit $4.8 bn, top among all states: Minister

Software exports from Tamil Nadu have reached an all-time high of USD 4.8 billion surpassing all other states in the country as of October 31, 2023, State Minister T R B Rajaa said on Wednesday. The Minister for Industries said the software exports from the state could hit USD 8 billion this financial year, marking a 'significant leap' from last year's USD 5.37 billion. Tamil Nadu oil spill: Chief Secy reviews situation with crisis mgmt group

The Tamil Nadu government on Monday reviewed the oil spillage mitigation works in north Chennai, with the Ennore Creek area suffering from "significant" oil deposits. An Expert Committee had made extensive field visits and concluded that oil spillage had happened from the premises of CPCL entering into Buckingham canal from Guard ponds and Storm Water Drain ponds finally reaching the Ennore Creek. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has issued a notice to the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) on the matter, an official release said. On Monday, Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena chaired a High-Level Committee meeting of the State Oil Spill Crisis Management Group (SOS-CMG) and reviewed the oil spillage mitigation work. Among others, the meeting was attended by top state government officials and those from the Coast Guard and the CPCL, the release said. Tamil Nadu Assembly re-adopts 10 bills that Governor RN Ravi 'returned'

Days after Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi returned 10 Bills passed by the State Assembly, the House on Saturday met for a special sitting and re-adopted all of them, even as Chief Minister M K Stalin slammed the Governor for withholding the Bills due to his "whims and fancies." Opposition AIADMK, which staged a walkout, asked why a special meeting to readopt the Bills was being held when the government has already taken the matter to the Supreme Court. The BJP, which has 4 MLAs, also walked out. The bills, covering different departments including Law, Agriculture and Higher Education, were passed in the wake of Ravi returning them on November 13. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Wednesday announced a four per cent hike in Dearness Allowance for government employees with retrospective effect from July 1, 2023. The move is set to benefit about 16 lakh state government employees, teachers, pensioners and family pensioners, entailing an additional, annual expenditure of Rs 2546.16 crore, an official release here said. Tamil Nadu court extends Senthil Balaji's judicial custody till Nov 6

A sessions court here on Friday extended Minister V Senthil Balaji's remand till November 6, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case. Principal Sessions Judge S Alli, before whom Senthil Balaji was produced by the prosecution through video-conferencing from the Puzhal Central Prison, extended his judicial custody till November 6. Balaji was arrested on June 14 by the ED in connection with a money laundering case linked to cash-for-jobs scam when he was the Transport Minister during the previous AIADMK regime. After his arrest, he was hospitalised and underwent a bypass surgery. Later, the ED took him into its custody for interrogation and following that he was remanded in judicial custody and lodged in Puzhal jail here. His remand is being periodically extended by the court. In the meanwhile, the ED had on August 12 filed a charge sheet, running to 3,000 pages against Balaji. Tamil Nadu registration dept earns revenue of Rs 180 cr in single day

In an achievement, the Registration department has earned a revenue of Rs 180 crore in a single day on October 18, the Tamil Nadu government said on Thursday. Registration of documents happen more on 'Subamuhurtha days' considered auspicious by the people. It is, hence, usual to allocate additional tokens for advance booking of time-slot on a specific day for registration of documents. Based on this practice, additional tokens were issued in sub-registrar offices to people for pre-booking registration on October 18. It saw a revenue of Rs 180 crore for the registration department on that single day and it is an achievement, the government said here in an official release. Similarly, authorities have directed issuance of additional tokens and 'tatkal' tokens to the public for registration on October 20, a subamuhurtha day. Registration of documents include a variety of purposes including those for sale-purchase of land, apartments, and registration of marriages.

Tamil Nadu amends state motor vehicles Act, taxes set to increase

Registration of new motor vehicles in Tamil Nadu is all set to cost more as the state Assembly on Wednesday amended the TN Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1974 increasing taxes. The other Bills adopted include an amendment to the TN Protected Agricultural Zone Development Act, 2020. The amendment included the newly formed Mayiladuthurai district in the Cauvery delta region in the protected agricultural zone. Also, "animal husbandry and inland fishery," were brought within the ambit of the term "agriculture" as defined in the 2020 Act. Taxes under other categories --like inter-state transfer of vehicle wherein new registration is provided-- were also increased by way of amendment. The amendment Bill said the government has not enhanced the taxes under the state Act since the year 2012.
