TN Governor R N Ravi re-allocates portfolios held by Senthil Balaji

Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi on Friday re-allocated the portfolios held by arrested state Minister V Senthil Balaji, on the recommendations of Chief Minister M K Stalin but "has not agreed" to the minister continuing in the cabinet, the Raj Bhavan said. With Balaji now becoming a minister without portfolio, Ravi opposed his continuing in the Stalin-led cabinet as he was facing criminal proceedings, a Raj Bhavan press release said. Ravi "has not agreed to Thiru V Senthil Balaji continuing any longer as a Member of the Council of Ministers, as he is facing criminal proceedings for moral turpitude and is currently in Judicial custody," it said. On Stalin's recommendations, the Electricity, Non-Conventional Energy Development portfolio held by Balaji has been allocated to Finance Minister Thangam Thennarsu, the release said. Madras HC allows shifting Senthil Balaji to pvt hospital for Bypass surgery

The Madras High Court on Thursday allowed the shifting of Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji, arrested by the ED and since under medical treatment at a city government hospital, to a private facility. A division bench of the HC, which was hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by Balaji's wife, gave the interim order. It issued notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on the main plea of illegal arrest of Balaji and posted the matter to June 22. The court said Balaji will continue to remain in judicial custody and allowed the ED to have its own team of doctors also to examine the minister.

Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission (TNSHRC) member V Kannadasan on Thursday met arrested state minister V Senthil Balaji in a hospital and said the latter had told him he was "treated badly" by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials who had arrested him on June 14 in a cash for jobs scam. The opposition AIADMK took exception to Kannadasan's visit to the government hospital to meet Balaji, claiming he had spoken in favour of the ruling DMK in the past in TV debates. Citing his meeting Balaji, Kannadasan stated the minister said he was "treated badly" by ED officials during his arrest. "He said he was dragged and suffered an injury in his head," Kannadasan said. Tamil Nadu minister Senthil Balaji allegedly "misused" his office for illegal gratification and "engineered" a job racket scam in the state transport undertakings during 2014-15 with purported kickbacks paid by candidates through his associates, the ED informed a local court on Wednesday hours after arresting the DMK leader. Calling him the "prime suspect" in the cash-for-jobs case, the federal probe agency also stated in its custody papers that alleged unaccounted cash deposits worth about Rs 1.60 crore were made in the bank accounts of Balaji and his wife. Arrested Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji has undergone coronary angiogram and has been advised bypass surgery at the "earliest", the hospital treating him said on Wednesday. The Electricity Minister was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case earlier in the day. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday arrested Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), official sources said.
