New ankle exoskeleton fits under clothes for potential wider usage

New ankle exoskeleton, developed by Vanderbilt mechanical engineers, is lightweight, low-profile and inexpensive which could be widely used among elderly people, those with impaired lower-leg muscle strength and workers whose jobs require substantial walking or running. The device is believed to be the first ankle exoskeleton that could be worn under clothes without restricting motion. It does not require additional components such as batteries or actuators carried on the back or waist. The study was published online in the journal of IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering. The study has been built upon a successful and widely cited ankle exoskeleton concept from the other researchers in 2015."We've shown how an unpowered ankle exoskeleton could be redesigned to fit under clothing and inside/under shoes so it more seamlessly integrates into daily life," said Matt Yandell, a mechanical engineering Ph.D. student and lead author of the study. The team has invented

Cost-effective method for creating hydrogen fuel from water

Scientists have identified ways to make production of hydrogen fuel by splitting water more cost-effective and efficient. Researchers from University of Arkansas and Argonne National Lab in the US showed that nanoparticles composed of nickel and iron are better alternatives than more costly materials when used as catalysts. The team demonstrated that using nanocatalysts composed of nickel and iron increases the efficiency of water electrolysis, the process of breaking water atoms apart to produce hydrogen and oxygen and combining them with electrons to create hydrogen gas. When nanoparticles composed of an iron and nickel shell around a nickel core are applied to the process, they interact with the hydrogen and oxygen atoms to weaken the bonds, increasing the efficiency of the reaction by allowing the generation of oxygen more easily, researchers said. Nickel and iron are also less expensive than other catalysts, which are made from scarce materials. This marks a step toward making ...

Microsoft successfully translates digital information into DNA

In the future, you will be storing data not into megabytes or gigabytes, but into DNA. In what comes as a significant achievement, Microsoft and researchers from the University of Washington have been able to translate digital information into DNA and then back to bits.Together, the researchers have been able to build a full end-to-end automated DNA storage device, Engadget reports. The prototype device converted the word 'Hello' into DNA. The device first encoded the bits (1's and 0's) into DNA sequences (A's, C's, T's, G's). It then synthesized the DNA and stored it as a liquid. This was then read by a DNA sequencer, and a software translated the sequences back into bits. The entire process for the 5-byte message took 21 hours to convert back and forth. The researchers have come up with ways to make the process both time and cost efficient. The data converted through this process from the word Hello yielded approximately 1 mg of DNA, and just 4 micrograms were retained for sequencing. .
