Hiring in the IT sector grew 16 per cent year-on-year in April, driven by factors such as AI adoption, cloud modernisation, and the continued expansion of Global Capability Centers (GCCs), a report said on Friday. The foundit Insights Tracker is a comprehensive monthly analysis of online job posting activity conducted by foundit.in. The report further said that skill-based hiring continued to dominate, with 62 per cent of IT employers prioritising practical expertise over formal qualifications. Amazon to close 7 warehouses in Quebec, end 1,700 jobs in next 2 months

Online retailer Amazon said on Wednesday that it's closing all seven of its warehouses in the Canadian province of Quebec in the next two months. The e-commerce giant said the move would provide "even more savings to our customers over the long run". However, a Canadian union that successfully unionised one warehouse accused the company of closing its sites to fend off organising efforts in the region. The closures will eliminate about 1,700 permanent full-time jobs in the greater Montreal area, Amazon said. The warehouses also employ 250 temporary employees. Amazon said it would enlist local, third-party companies to deliver packages, reverting to a business model it used in Quebec before 2020. "This decision wasn't made lightly, and we're offering impacted employees a package that includes up to 14 weeks' pay after facilities close and transitional benefits, like job placement resources," Amazon spokesperson Barbara Agrait said in a statement. Agrait said the decision was made

Companies resort to 'office peacocking' to retain, lure employees: Report

To retain employees and bring them back to office, many companies are resorting to 'Office Peacocking', which involves creating a swanky or fancy work space, and spending huge amounts of their budget on attractive designs, says industry experts. The 'Office Peacocking' concept gained significant traction in India post-Covid, as companies sought to entice employees back to the office following the remote work shift induced by the pandemic in order to compete with the comfort of home offices, human resource service provider TeamLease Services CEO-Staffing Kartik Narayan told PTI. Peacocking involves redesigning office spaces with stylish decor, trendy furniture, cosy corners, natural light, and well-stocked pantries to create an inviting and vibrant work environment. The goal is to make the office more attractive and enjoyable for employees, enhancing their willingness to return to in-person work. "Companies are allocating a substantial portion of their budgets for office redesigns. .

FDI easing in space sector to lure foreign players, boost high-tech jobs

The government's decision to ease foreign direct investment (FDI) in the space sector will help attract foreign players as well as startups and will boost demand for high-tech jobs, experts say. The government has eased FDI norms in the sector by allowing 100 per cent overseas investment in making components for satellites, as part of efforts to attract overseas players and private companies into the segment. The provisions were notified last month. Sreeram Ananthasayanam, Partner, Deloitte India, said that the recent amendment of higher FDI limits in the space sector is a significant step towards transforming India's space program, in terms of infrastructure development. "For the private sector, it opens doors to new business opportunities, it presents an opportunity to leverage private investments to enhance space capabilities, access to cutting-edge technologies to accelerate and develop next-gen space products, and collaboration with global players," Ananthasayanam said.
