Trump's tariffs seen cutting into China sales of US companies, survey finds

Many US companies operating in China expect their sales to take a hit this year from US President Donald Trump's tariffs and the ones that China has imposed in response, according to an annual survey released Wednesday by the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai. Nearly two-thirds of the 254 companies who responded said the new tariffs have reduced expected revenues for their China operations in 2025. About one-third, many in banking and other industries that don't import from or export to the US, don't expect any impact. Trump has imposed an additional 30 per cent tax on imports from China, after raising them at one point to 145 per cent before the two countries agreed in May to scale back a tit-for-tat tariff war. China has responded with a 10 per cent tax on US imports. The tariffs hit companies that export to the US and those that import American parts or ingredients for their production in China, such as chemical companies, Shanghai chamber leaders said. Tariffs have had a

Mexico proposes new import taxes on 1,400 products to boost production

Mexico's government submitted a budget proposal Tuesday that would impose new import taxes on more than 1,400 products many from Asian nations to strengthen national production at a time when the United States is pressuring its North American trade partner to present a united front against China. Treasury Secretary dgar Amador did not mention China specifically, but said that the proposed 2026 budget will affect countries with which we do not have a commercial treaty. The tariffs will be within the guidelines of the World Trade Organisation and the Mexican government would be sensitive to any impacts on production or prices, he said. Amador did recognise that the measures are happening within the discussion and future commercial conversations with our North American partners, but insisted the goal was strengthening domestic production and consumption, as well as reducing trade deficits. Mexico has been engaged in increasingly difficult trade negotiations with the Trump ...

US Supreme Court speeds up hearing on Trump's powers to impose high tariff

The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted an unusually quick hearing on whether President Donald Trump has the power to impose sweeping tariffs under federal law. The justices will hear arguments in November, lightning fast by the typical standards of the nation's highest court. The small businesses and states that challenged the tariffs in court also agreed to the accelerated timetable. They say Trump illegally used emergency powers to set import taxes on goods from nearly every country in the world, nearly driving their businesses to bankruptcy. Two lower courts have found most of the tariffs were illegally imposed, though a 7-4 appeals court has left them in place for now. The Trump administration asked the justices to intervene quickly, arguing the law gives him the power to regulate imports and the country would be on the brink of economic catastrophe if the president is barred from exercising unilateral tariff authority. The case will come before a court that has been reluctant t

Global trade tensions a threat for domestic ferro alloys sector: IFAPA

Growing trade tensions at global level pose a major threat for the domestic ferro alloys sector, which has raised production capacity over the years, apex industry body IFAPA said urging the government for its intervention. Ferro alloys like silico manganese and ferro chrome, etc, are used by steel makers as deoxidisers and alloying agents, to improve properties like hardness, strength, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance of the commodity. "The domestic ferro alloys industry has raised its productive capacity as well as export potential significantly over the years. However, weakening steel production globally, trade barriers and safeguards and upcoming carbon border taxes pose a major threat to exports, especially for India," Manish Sarda, Chairman, Indian Ferro Alloy Producers' Association (IFAPA) told PTI. India is the world's top exporter of manganese alloys and the third-largest supplier of ferro chrome, he said, adding that this threat or challenge, call it what you will

Govt exploring alternative export markets to shield farmers from US tariffs

The government is actively exploring alternative export destinations and import substitution strategies to protect farmers from the impact of US tariffs, D K Yadava, Deputy Director General (Crop Science) at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), said on Monday. "The government is trying to have all alternatives to protect the interests of farmers. As far as exports are concerned, the concerned ministries are already exploring alternative countries for the export of various commodities," Yadava said at a media briefing about the ongoing event 'Dialogue Next' organised by the US-based World Food Prize Foundation for the first time in India. The remarks came in the backdrop of the Trump administration imposing a steep 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods entering America. On imports of genetically modified soybean and maize, as well as milk and milk products, Yadava said the government has "a very clear stand" and is identifying alternative import sources. China's export growth slows in August amid US tariffs, trade tensions

China's exports grew last month but at a slower pace than in recent months, the country's customs agency said Monday. Exports reached $321.8 billion in August, a 4.4% increase compared to the same month last year. That was down from a 7.2% jump in July. Meanwhile, imports totalled $219.5 billion, a 1.8% rise. China's large trade surplus has become a contentious issue with major trading partners including the US and the European Union. Low-priced Chinese imports are a boon for consumers but can lead to job cuts in manufacturing. In the first eight months of the year, China's exported $785.3 billion more in goods and services than it imported from other countries, the monthly customs data showed. President Donald Trump has imposed 30% in additional tariffs on imports from China since taking office early this year. He backed down from even higher tariffs after China retaliated with import taxes of its own. The two countries are in talks to try to reach a trade agreement. The tariffs
