Turkiye, Syria earthquake toll crosses 11,000-mark; deadliest in decade

The death toll from an earthquake in Turkiye and Syria has passed 11,000. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is visiting the quake zone. He said the fatalities in Turkiye alone have passed 8,500. He conceded shortfalls in the response during the first day but said the situation has improved since then. We won't allow any of our citizens to be left in the streets, he said. Thinly stretched rescue teams worked through the night in Turkiye and Syria, pulling more bodies from the rubble of thousands of buildings toppled by a catastrophic earthquake. The death toll rose Wednesday to more than 9,500, making the quake the deadliest in more than a decade. Turkiye's disaster management agency said the country's death toll had risen to 7,108, bringing the overall total to 9,638, including fatalities reported in neighbouring Syria, since Monday's earthquake and multiple aftershocks. The death toll in government-held areas of Syria has climbed to 1,250, with 2,054 injured, according to t

Death toll in Turkey, Syria earthquakes reaches 9,400; deadliest in 10 yrs

The death toll from the earthquake in southern Turkiye and northern Syria has climbed past 9,400, making it the deadliest seismic event in more than a decade. Turkish authorities updated the country's death toll to 6,957 on Wednesday. In neighbouring Syria, the government has reported 1,250 deaths from Monday's pre-dawn earthquake in the areas it controls. The White Helmets, volunteer first responders in a rebel-held enclave, have reported 1,280 deaths. More than 30,000 people have been injured, and authorities expect the death toll to continue to climb as rescue workers race to pull survivors from the rubble in cities and towns across a wide area. In 2011, a magnitude 9.0 quake off the northeast coast of Japan triggered a tsunami, killing nearly 20,000 people. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Nepalin 2015 killed more than 8,800 people.

Wreckage, rescue and hope persists in Turkey's earthquake epicentre

Zeliha Hisir tried to speak, but could barely move after her hourslong rescue Tuesday near the epicentre of a powerful earthquake that has devastated parts of Turkiye and Syria. The 58-year-old woman's eyes darted around in shock and relief as a rescue crew covered her in a bright pink and green fuzzy blanket. Dressed only in shorts and a T-shirt, she had survived through freezing temperatures in Kahramanmaras. Her son, Mufit Hisir, told The Associated Press that firefighters who flew in from Antalya had rescued his relatives. "Two hours ago my sibling was rescued after a six-hour effort. And my mother's rescue took two hours. They're both well," he said. Crowds gathered at wreckage sites throughout Turkiye, vapour showing the air as people breathed in and out in anticipation of reaching more survivors. Even those who had emerged or escaped collapse in Monday's magnitude 7.8 earthquake and its aftershocks now had to sleep in cars, outside or in government shelters. Many felt ...

Earthquake death toll surpasses 5,100; 3-month state of emergency in Turkey

The death toll from a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and multiple aftershocks rose to more than 5,000 on Tuesday as more bodies were pulled from the rubble of collapsed buildings. Turkiye's Vice President Fuat Oktay said the total number of deaths in Turkey had risen to 3,419, with another 20,534 people injured. That brought the number of people killed to 5,102, with another 1,602 people confirmed dead on the Syrian side of the border. The earthquake struck early Monday morning, bringing down thousands of buildings. Rescuers were racing frantically to find more survivors but their efforts were being impeded by temperatures below freezing and some 200 aftershocks, which made the search through unstable structures perilous.

101 NDRF personnel leave for quake-hit Turkiye to aid rescue efforts

Two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, comprising 101 personnel, left for Turkiye on Tuesday to help in rescue operations after a 7.8 magnitude quake killed thousands of people in the country. The federal contingency force is accompanied by two search dogs, four-wheeled vehicles, chipping hammers, cutting tools, first aid medicines and communication setup. The personnel, drawn from teams based in Ghaziabad and Kolkata, boarded two Indian Air Force (IAF) C-17 aircraft from the Hindon air base in Ghaziabad, an NDRF officer told PTI. The Turkey-bound group includes five women rescuers, a doctor and paramedics. The NDRF teams will land at the Adana airport in south Turkey where they will meet a link officer from the Indian Embassy and Turkish government authorities for further deployment at affected areas, he said. Frantic search in Turkey, Syria after massive quakes kill over 5,000

Rescuers in Turkey and war-ravaged Syria searched through the frigid night into Tuesday, hoping to pull more survivors from the rubble after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed more than 3,400 people and toppled thousands of buildings across a wide region. Authorities feared the death toll from Monday's pre-dawn earthquake and aftershocks would keep climbing as rescuers looked for survivors among tangles of metal and concrete spread across the region beset by Syria's 12-year civil war and refugee crisis. Survivors cried out for help from within mountains of debris as first responders contended with rain and snow. Seismic activity continued to rattle the region, including another jolt nearly as powerful as the initial quake. Workers carefully pulled away slabs of concrete and reached for bodies as desperate families waited for news of loved ones. My grandson is 1 1/2 years old. Please help them, please...
