Two-wheelers are a necessity and not luxury in the current Indian context and taxes on these vehicles must be reduced as the industry is staring at a single-digit growth next fiscal with affordability becoming an issue, according to a senior executive of Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India. There is also a requirement for income tax rationalisation to enable middle-income people start spending again, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) Director Sales and Marketing Yogesh Mathur told PTI in an interview. In the ongoing fiscal, motorcycle sales have not done as well as the scooter segment due to softness in demand from rural market, due to a variety of factors including delayed monsoons, he added. "From the rationalisation of GST (point of view), we have been requesting the government to really take care of (it) because two-wheelers are actually not a luxury. Exports of electric two-wheelers from India has a lot of potential, specially to markets where Indian manufacturers are already selling conventional engine counterparts, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday. Speaking at the launch of Revolt Motors' electric commuter motorcycle here, Gadkari said 50 per cent of motorcycles produced in India are exported and major players like Bajaj Auto, Hero MotoCorp, and TVS have a large presence in the international markets. The minister asked Revolt Motors to explore markets in the neighbouring countries as well as Africa and Latin America. Anjali Rattan, Co Founder and Chairperson of Rattan India Enterprises -- the promoter firm of Revolt Motors -- said the company has firmed up plans for exports to Sri Lanka to start with. TVS Motor Company on Sunday said its total sales increased 13 per cent year-on-year to 3,91,588 units in August as compared with the same month last year. The company had dispatched 3,45,848 units to its dealers in the same month last year, TVS Motor Company said in a statement. Total two-wheeler sales last month stood at 3,78,841 units as against 3,32,110 units recorded in August 2023, a growth of 14 per cent. Two-wheeler sales in the domestic market grew 13 per cent year-on-year to 2,89,073 units last month from 2,56,619 units in August 2023. Total exports registered a growth of 14 per cent with sales increasing from 87,515 units in August last year to 99,976 units last month.
The Bullet 350 model saw 14 per cent volume drop in Q1FY25, reflecting limited acceptance of the new model. Similarly, the Hunter 350, launched in FY23, saw an 8 per cent volume decline.
The domestic two-wheeler segment will continue on growth path in the current fiscal on the back of factors like normal rainfall and uptick in rural demand, according to TVS Motor Chairman Ralf Speth. The two-wheeler industry is expected to sustain a steady volume growth this fiscal driven by improved domestic sales and good traction in executive and premium segment motorcycles, a report said on Monday. According to CareEdge Ratings, post-Covid, sales volume of two-wheelers had consistently declined during FY20, FY21 and FY22 before starting to recover from FY23, with sales momentum continuing in FY24 as well. "CareEdge Ratings anticipates two-wheeler sales volume growth to continue in FY25 and it would be more driven by improved domestic sales, higher EV sales, launch of CNG powered two-wheelers and good traction in executive and premium segment motorcycles," said Hardik Shah, Director at CareEdge Ratings.
