Court rejects Trump attempt to thwart prosecutor in election investigation

Georgia's highest court Monday rejected a request by former President Donald Trump to block a district attorney from prosecuting him for his actions in wake of the 2020 election. The Georgia Supreme Court unanimously shot down a petition that Trump's attorneys filed last week asking the court to intervene. Trump's legal team argued that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and her office should be barred from seeking charges and that a special grand jury report that is part of the inquiry should be thrown out. Willis has been investigating since early 2021 whether Trump and his allies broke any laws as they tried to overturn his narrow election loss in Georgia to Democrat Joe Biden. She has suggested she is likely to seek charges in the case from a grand jury next month. The state Supreme Court noted in its five-page ruling Monday that Trump has a similar petition pending in Fulton County Superior Court. The justices unanimously declined to overstep the lower court, writing .

Donald Trump can run for 2024 presidential election even if convicted

Donald Trump can continue his campaign for another term in the White House even as the beleaguered former US president has been indicted for illegally retaining classified government documents after leaving office in 2021. Trump, 77, on Tuesday, pleaded not guilty to 37 federal felony counts related to his mishandling of classified documents at the federal courthouse in Miami, Florida. It marks the first time federal charges have been brought against a former president. This indictment is the second criminal case filed against Trump, the frontrunner for the Republican Party's nomination in the 2024 presidential election. In early April, Trump surrendered to authorities in New York and appeared in state court to face 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in the first degree. He pleaded not guilty to those charges also. On May 9, Trump was found liable in a civil case brought by columnist E Jean Carroll, who claimed he raped her and defamed her. Trump denied those allegatio

Joe Biden's 2024 pitch highlights pragmatism over Donald Trump's pugilism

President Joe Biden promised voters in 2020 that he knew how to get things done in Washington and could bring stability to the capital. It seemed like a message out of step with the more combative era brought on by Donald Trump. But Biden prevailed, and as he seeks a second term, he is again trying to frame the race as a referendum on competence and governance, pointing to the bipartisan debt limit and budget legislation he signed on Saturday as another exemplar of the success of his approach. The agreement the Democratic president negotiated with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other Republicans averted the catastrophe of a US government default and forestalled another threat until after the 2024 election while largely protecting the domestic agenda that formed the backbone of what he hopes will form his legacy. His approach, favouring pragmatism over Trumpian pugilism, will be tested as never before in the coming campaign, with his approval rating even among Democrats low despi

Trump digs in on election lies, insults accuser during CNN town hall event

During a contentious CNN town hall Wednesday night, former President Donald Trump dug in on his lies about the 2020 election, downplayed the violence on Jan. 6, 2021, and repeatedly insulted the woman whom a civil jury this week found him liable of sexually abusing and defaming. Trump, returning to the network after years of acrimony, also refused to say whether he wants Ukraine to win the war against Russian aggression and said the U.S. might as well default on its debt obligation, despite the potentially devastating economic consequences. The live, televised event held in early-voting New Hampshire underscored the challenges of fact-checking Trump in real time. The former president was cheered on and applauded by an audience of Republican and unaffiliated voters who plan to vote in the GOP primary, as moderator Kaitlan Collins sometimes struggled to correct the record as Trump steamrolled with untrue statements. You are a nasty person, he snapped at one point. The event also ...

Trump to appear on CNN town hall a day after sex assault verdict

Former President Donald Trump will return to CNN's airwaves on Wednesday, joining the network for a two-hour town hall event in early-voting New Hampshire a day after a civil jury found him liable for sexually assaulting an advice columnist nearly three decades ago. The forum, which was publicly announced last week, was expected to be notable because it would be bringing together a network and a candidate who have long sparred with each other. But the stakes raised considerably on Tuesday after jurors in New York found Trump had sexually abused and defamed E. Jean Carroll, though it rejected her claim that he raped her. The jury awarded her USD 5 million in damages. While the civil trial verdict carries no criminal penalties, it nonetheless revives attention on the myriad investigations facing Trump, who was indicted in New York in March for hush money payments made to women who had accused him of sexual encounters. Trump is also facing investigations in Georgia and Washington over

US: Election conspiracist Kristina Karamo to lead Michigan GOP through 2024

Election conspiracist Kristina Karamo, who was overwhelmingly defeated in her bid to become Michigan's secretary of state, was chosen Saturday to lead the state's Republican Party for the next two years. Karamo defeated a 10-candidate field dominated by far-right candidates to win the Michigan GOP chair position after a state convention that lasted nearly 11 hours. A former community college professor, she lost her secretary of state race in the 2022 midterms by 14 percentage points after mounting a campaign filled with election conspiracies. Karamo inherits a state party torn by infighting and millions in debt. She will be tasked with helping win back control of the Legislature and flipping one of the nation's most competitive Senate seats, while attempting to help a presidential candidate win the battleground state. Addressing delegates before the vote, Karamo said that "our party is dying" and it needs to be rebuilt into "a political machine that strikes fear in the heart of ...

Ex-prez Obama urges Georgia Democrats to push turnout for Warnock

Former President Barack Obama and Sen. Raphael Warnock on Thursday urged Democratic voters to keep pushing an apparent head start in early voting in the Georgia Senate runoff against Republican Herschel Walker, ahead of Friday's last day of early in-person voting and Tuesday's election day. If they didn't get tired, you can't get tired, Obama told a crowd gathered in a cavernous former railroad repair shop east of downtown Atlanta. Voters have already cast more than 1.4 million ballots amid an all-hands-on-deck push by Democrats to bank as many votes as possible while Republicans, especially Walker, have taken a less aggressive approach that could leave the GOP nominee heavily dependent on runoff Election Day turnout. We've got to keep on showing up, Warnock told the crowd at his largest event of the four-week runoff blitz. We've got to keep on voting. We cannot let up for even a moment. We've got to keep our foot on the gas all the way to victory. Both Obama and Warnock criticised

Running for 2024 presidential election to be a family decision: Joe Biden

US President Joe Biden has said he intends to run again for presidency in 2024, but ultimately it is going to be a family decision. That decision might come as early after the Christmas-New Year timeline, he indicated. Our intention is to run again. That's been our intention, regardless of what the outcome of this election was, Biden told reporters at a White House news conference. The fact that Democratic Party outperformed anything anyone expected and did better than any off-year presidency since John Kennedy is one that gives everybody, like, Hoo -- sigh of relief -- that the mega Republicans are not taking over the government again, et cetera, he said. And so, my judgment of running, when I announce ...Now, my intention is that I run again. But I'm a great respecter of fate. And this is, ultimately, a family decision, Biden said in response to a question. He said he thinks everybody wants him to run again for the presidency. But we're going to have discussions about it. I d

Republicans, Democrats notch victories in competitive midterm races

Control of Congress hung in the balance early on Tuesday, with both parties notching victories in some of the most competitive races in a midterm election that centred on voter frustration over high inflation and the sudden rollback of abortion rights. Democrats held a crucial Senate seat in New Hampshire, where Democratic Sen. Sen. Maggie Hassan defeated Republican Don Bolduc, a retired Army general who had initially promoted former President Donald Trump's lies about the 2020 election but tried to shift away from some of the more extreme positions he took during the GOP primary. Republicans held Senate seats in Ohio and North Carolina. A district-by-district fight was underway for control of the House, where Democrats held closely watched seats in moderate suburban districts from Virginia to Kansas and Rhode Island. Rep. Elaine Luria, a Navy veteran who serves on the House committee investigating the January 6 insurrection, was the first Democratic incumbent to lose a highly ...
