Global leaders terrified of Trump, quietly tell me, 'he can't win': Biden

President Joe Biden tore into his predecessor on Tuesday, suggesting that global leaders are terrified of what Donald Trump's return to the White House could do to democratic rule around the world. Every international meeting I attend, Biden said, specifically referencing his whirlwind trip to Germany last week, They pull me aside one leader after the other, quietly and say, Joe, he can't win.' My democracy is at stake. His voice rising, Biden then asked if, America walks away, who leads the world? Who? Name me a country. The comments came during what was supposed to be a rather staid speech on health care in New Hampshire. They were a dose of unfiltered politics at an event otherwise focused on Biden's policy legacy with the race to replace him just two weeks from concluding. And they made clear that the president also sees not having Trump succeed him as an important piece of how he might go down in history. After the speech, Biden went to a campaign office to support New ...

Russia, Iran may fuel violent post-election protests in US: Intel officials

Russia and Iran may try to encourage violent protests in the US after next month's election, senior intelligence officials warned Tuesday, citing two recent examples of foreign intelligence agencies seeking to sow discord ahead of the vote. The officials, with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, said both countries could support violent protests either by covertly organizing events themselves or by encouraging participation in those planned by domestic groups. The aim, the officials said, would be to increase division, cast doubt on election results and complicate the transfer of presidential power. In January, Russian military intelligence tried to recruit an American to organize protests in the US, according to a declassified national intelligence memo released publicly Tuesday. The American was probably unwitting and did not know he was in contact with Russian agents, the memo said. The US first accused the Iranian government of covertly supporting protests again

US elections 2024: Pennsylvania emerges as must-win for both Harris, Trump

Pennsylvania, the state that played a vital role in the US War of Independence, has emerged as the ground zero for the 2024 presidential elections. Political experts feel that Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and her Republican rival Donald Trump are headed for a cliffhanger in the state. One needs 270 electoral college votes to win the presidential race and each of the 50 states in the US has a different number of electoral college votes. Pennsylvania has 19 while California, a Democratic bastion, has 54 electoral college votes, followed by Texas -- a Republican stronghold -- 40. Given the political support in each state, experts have already figured out the number of electoral college votes going to a candidate based on past voting patterns, except for the seven battleground states. These seven states are Nevada, which has six electoral college votes, Arizona (11), Wisconsin (10), Michigan (15), Pennsylvania (19), Georgia (16) and North Carolina (16). With the fast-changing ...

US elections: Trump uses interviews on economics to promote tariffs

Donald Trump seized Tuesday on an opening to sound his frequent argument that imposing huge tariffs on foreign goods would amount to an economic elixir - one that he claims would raise enormous sums for the government, protect U.S. firms from overseas competition and prod foreign companies to open factories in the United States. Appearing before a friendly audience at the Economic Club of Chicago, the Republican presidential nominee repeatedly asserted that tariffs are misunderstood as an economic tool. To me," Trump said, the most beautiful word in the dictionary is tariff. It's my favorite word. It needs a public relations firm. If tariffs need an image makeover, it's probably because mainstream economists say they actually amount to a tax on American consumers that would make the economy less efficient and send inflation surging in the United States. The moderator, John Micklethwait, editor-in-chief of Bloomberg News, often struggled to keep the conversation focused on economics

Despite old age, Donald Trump refuses to share health details in public

If he wins next month's election, Donald Trump would be the oldest person in US history to be elected president. Yet the 78-year-old Republican nominee refuses to disclose new details about his physical or mental well-being, breaking decades of precedent. There have been limited snapshots of Trump's health over the last year. After he survived an attempted assassination in July, Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson, a staunch supporter who served as his White House physician, wrote a memo describing a gunshot wound to Trump's right ear. And last November, Trump's personal physician, Dr Bruce Aronwald, wrote a letter describing him as being in excellent health with exceptional cognitive exams. He noted that cardiovascular studies are all normal and cancer screening tests were negative. Trump had also reduced his weight. But those communications didn't address more fundamental questions about Trump's health, including his blood pressure, exact weight or whether he has continued using previously .

Jill Biden is out campaigning again but not for her husband this time

Jill Biden wasted no time after she stepped up to the microphone at a suburban Detroit restaurant. Now some have come to (the) Detroit area recently and thrown around some insults, but from what I've seen this is a vibrant, thriving city, she said. It was a swipe at Republican Donald Trump, who aimed a recent dart at the most populous city in a critical Midwestern battleground state. The first lady was back on the campaign trail for the first time in months, but no longer pushing Democrats to support her husband, President Joe Biden. Instead, she is now putting her energy into boosting Vice President Kamala Harris, who Biden endorsed for president after he dropped his reelection bid. On Tuesday, the first lady wrapped up a five-day swing through five battleground states. While the race itself has changed, what remains unchanged for Jill Biden is her effort to highlight contrasts with Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, in the hope that Democrats can keep the former president

Two shot during Trump assassination attempt say secret service failed them

Two men who were shot during the first assassination attempt on Donald Trump this summer say the US Secret Service was negligent in protecting the former president and other bystanders at the campaign rally in Pennsylvania. David Dutch, 57, an ex-Marine, and James Copenhaver, 74, a retired liquor store manager, told NBC News in an exclusive interview Monday they were excited to be sitting in the bleachers behind the Republican nominee at the fairgrounds in Butler on July 13 when gunshots rang out and they were hit. Another man, Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed in the shooting while shielding his family. Trump was wounded in the ear. The interview with the two Pennsylvania men who were critically injured marked their first public statements since 20-year-old shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, opened fire in July from an unsecured rooftop nearby before he was fatally shot by sharpshooters. It was like getting hit with a sledgehammer right in the chest, sai

Armed man arrested at checkpoint near Trump's weekend rally in California

A Nevada man with a shotgun, a loaded handgun and ammunition in his vehicle was arrested at a security checkpoint outside Donald Trump's rally Saturday night in the Southern California desert, authorities said Sunday. The suspect, a 49-year-old resident of Las Vegas, was driving a black SUV that was stopped by deputies assigned to the rally in Coachella, east of Los Angeles, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said in a statement. He was released Saturday on USD 5,000 bail. The man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a loaded firearm and possession of a high-capacity magazine, the department said. This incident did not impact the safety of former President Trump or attendees of the event, the statement said. The suspect is scheduled to appear in court on January 2, 2025, according to online records. Media members, as well as VIP ticket holders, were routed through a number of intersections manned by state and local law enforcement officers before arriving at a large, gr

Harris in good health, possesses resiliency for prez fight, says her doctor

Vice President Kamala Harris is in excellent health and possesses the physical and mental resiliency required to serve as president, her doctor said in a letter released Saturday that summarizes her medical history and status. Dr Joshua Simmons, a US Army colonel and physician to the vice president, wrote that Harris, 59, maintains a healthy, active lifestyle and that her most recent physical last April was unremarkable. She possesses the physical and mental resiliency required to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency, to include those as Chief Executive, Head of State and Commander in Chief, he wrote in a two-page letter. Harris' advisers hope to use the moment to draw a contrast with Republican Donald Trump, who has released only limited information about his health over the years, and raise questions about his fitness to serve, according to a campaign aide who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. Trump, 78, has released very little health ...

Harris still introducing herself as she sets out on media tour amid voting

When Vice President Kamala Harris sat down for an interview with podcaster Alex Cooper, the conversation didn't start by parsing policy positions. The goal, Cooper told the Democratic nominee, was to get to know you as a person. And that was just fine with Harris, who said she was on the popular Call Her Daddy podcast because one of the best ways to communicate with people is to be real. Long past the midway point of her unexpected presidential campaign and with voting already underway, Harris is still introducing herself to Americans who will determine her fate in this year's presidential election. On Tuesday, her media blitz will take her to studios across Manhattan as the Democratic nominee tries to reach as many people as possible in the shortest period of time. It's a sharp shift after largely avoiding interviews since replacing President Joe Biden at the top of the ticket, and it's an implicit acknowledgment that she needs to do more to edge out Republican candidate Donald ...
