Biden talks election, economy, and, Middle East in surprise news briefing

After 1,080 days as president, Joe Biden on Friday decided to pop in and take questions in the White House briefing room for the first time, striding in with a grin after a strong monthly jobs report and the temporary settlement of a strike by ports workers. The president has been less available than his recent predecessors to questions from White House press corps, making his surprise appearance welcome to the gathered reporters who waited as his press secretary's daily briefing was moved up 15 minutes, then delayed for nearly one hour. The president stepped through the press room's blue door in a dark gray suit and red tie and proceeded to make news in response to questions about comments on the 2024 presidential election, the latest jobs numbers and the escalating conflict in the Middle East. The 81-year old stepped aside from the Democratic nomination this summer, backing Vice President Kamala Harris instead. He acknowledged doubts about whether the November election would be ..

How Donald Trump credits an immigration chart for saving his life

Ever since the assassination attempt at his rally in Pennsylvania, Donald Trump has professed a unique fondness for a bar chart he credits for saving his life. Trump was addressing the crowd in Butler about illegal immigration and reviewing a chart that detailed U.S.-Mexico border crossings during his administration and President Joe Biden's term. He had his head turned to the right to review the graphic on a projection screen when the gunfire began. One bullet nicked his right ear, coming millimeters from maiming or killing him. He has said having his head turned probably saved my life, adding at times that he loves the chart more than I even love the police and saying he will sleep with that chart for the rest of my life. He has made it a recurring campaign prop and is likely to show it again when he returns to Butler on Saturday. The chart helps the Republican presidential nominee connect an iconic moment from his 2024 campaign to his signature issue since he entered politics. It

US VP debate: Vance refuses to say Trump lost 2020 presidential election

Republican vice presidential candidate J D Vance has refused to acknowledge that Donald Trump lost the 2020 elections, as he evaded a direct reply on whether the former president would seek to challenge this year's election results even if these were certified in every state. Senator Vance of Ohio came face to face with his Democratic rival Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Tuesday in the only vice presidential debate of this election cycle. The debate comes just over a month before the crucial US presidential elections when the country will choose between Democratic Presidential nominee Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Trump as the next leader. In reference to the January 6, 2021 insurrection, Vance did not give a clear answer when asked if Trump would again challenge election results this year even if every governor certifies the results. "Look, what President Trump has said is that there were problems in 2020, and my own belief is that we should fight about those issues, deba

Trump, Harris campaigns claim victories after fierce arguments in VP debate

The Trump and Harris campaigns have claimed victories in the vice-presidential debate as their running mates, Senator J D Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, battled fiercely in a live televised debate wherein they tried to convince their fellow Americans to support, vote and elect them. But unlike the presidential debate, this one lacked high-clash moments. The only vice-presidential debate was hosted by CBS News in New York. As the two vice presidential candidates concluded the 90-minute debate, Walz patted Vance on the side of his arm, and Vance gave Walz a pat on the back. Usha, wife of the US Senator from Ohio gave Vance a warm hug. Vance then introduced Usha to the moderators. Thank you guys for hosting, he said. The Walzes also chatted with the moderators. I think it was a good debate. The public got to see a contrast, and I think the ending sums it up. The democracy issue is important, Walz told reporters after the couple picked pepperoni pizza from Justino's pizza in t

US elections: Trump won't participate in interview for '60 Minutes' special

CBS News said on Tuesday that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has declined to participate in an interview with "60 Minutes" for its election special, which will go forward next Monday with Democratic opponent Kamala Harris alone. Television's top-rated news programme regularly invites the two presidential contenders for separate interviews that air back-to-back on a show near the election. This year, it is scheduled for Monday instead of its usual Sunday time slot. Asked for comment, the former president's campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said, "Fake news," adding that there were discussions but nothing was ever locked in. "60 Minutes" said Trump's campaign had initially agreed to an interview before telling CBS that the former president would not appear. The network said its invitation to sit for an interview still stands, and correspondent Scott Pelley will explain Trump's absence to viewers. Vice-President Harris will appear in a pretaped interview with Bill ...

Trump rallies in Wisconsin's Democratic bastion ahead of vice prez debate

Former President Donald Trump spent more than an hour ahead of Tuesday night's vice-presidential debate campaigning in a Democratic county that is crucial to Kamala Harris' hopes for winning the key battleground state of Wisconsin. Republican Trump appeared at a manufacturing facility in Waunakee, a suburb of Wisconsin's capital city of Madison in the Democratic stronghold of Dane County. Trump had never campaigned in Dane County nor visited as president. In an event advertised as economic-themed, Trump bounced from subject to subject, also criticising Democratic nominee Harris on issues, including foreign policy, crime and immigration, while intermittently pivoting to outgoing President Joe Biden. "I'm asking every citizen to join me in launching sort of a new golden age for America," Trump told hundreds inside Dane Manufacturing, a metal fabricator that has a long history of hosting Republican candidates and officeholders. Later on Tuesday, Trump was to hold an event at a museum

Trump cites new data on migrants with criminal pasts: All you need to know

Republicans are pointing to newly released immigration enforcement data to bolster their argument that the Biden administration is letting migrants who have committed serious crimes go free in the US. But the numbers have been misconstrued without key context. Immigration and Customs Enforcement released data to Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales in response to a request he made for information about people under ICE supervision either convicted of crimes or facing criminal charges. Gonzales' Texas district includes an 800-mile stretch bordering Mexico. Gonzales posted the numbers online and they immediately became a flashpoint in the presidential campaign between former President Donald Trump, who has vowed to carry out mass deportations, and Vice President Kamala Harris. Immigration and the Biden administration's record on border security has become a key issue in the election. Here's a look at the data and what it does or doesn't show: What are the numbers? As of July 21, ICE sai

Trump escalates attacks on Harris' mental fitness, suggests prosecution

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump escalated his personal attacks on his Democratic rival Kamala Harris on Sunday by repeating an insult that she was "mentally impaired" while also saying she should be "impeached and prosecuted". Trump's rally in Erie, Pennsylvania, took on similar themes as an event one day earlier that he described himself as a "dark speech". He told a cheering crowd that Harris was responsible for an "invasion" at the US-Mexico border and "she should be impeached and prosecuted for her actions". "Crooked Joe Biden became mentally impaired," he added. "Sad. But lying Kamala Harris, honestly, I believe she was born that way. There's something wrong with Kamala. And I just don't know what it is but there is definitely something missing. And you know what, everybody knows it." With just over a month until the election, Trump is intensifying his use of personal and offensive attacks, even as some Republicans say he'd be better sticking to the issues. His ..

Secret Service failures before Trump rally shooting were preventable: Panel

Multiple Secret Service failures ahead of the July rally for former president Donald Trump where a gunman opened fire were foreseeable, preventable, and directly related to the events resulting in the assassination attempt that day, according to a bipartisan Senate investigation released on Wednesday. Similar to the agency's own internal investigation and an ongoing bipartisan House probe, the interim report from the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee found multiple failures on almost every level ahead of the Butler, Pennsylvania shooting, including in planning, communications, security and allocation of resources. The consequences of those failures were dire, said Michigan Sen. Gary Peters, the Democratic chairman of the Homeland panel. Investigators found that there was no clear chain of command among the Secret Service and other security agencies and no plan for coverage of the building where the shooter climbed up to fire the shots. Officials were ...

Trump tells women 'I will be your protector' as GOP reaches out to voters

From former president Donald Trump to Ohio Senate candidate Bernie Moreno, male Republican candidates are struggling to speak to female voters, using language criticised as tone deaf and patronising as they try to win support from women and speak to issues important to them. On Monday night, Trump cast himself as a protector" of women, saying in battleground Pennsylvania that he will save them from fear and loneliness and they will no longer have to think about abortion. You will no longer be abandoned, lonely or scared. You will no longer be in danger. ... You will no longer have anxiety from all of the problems our country has today," Trump said. You will be protected, and I will be your protector." At a town hall event on Friday, Moreno bemoaned the fact that abortion has become the deciding issue for many suburban women, calling the notion a little crazy, by the way, but especially for women that are like past 50. I'm thinking to myself, I don't really think that's an issue for

US elections: Here's what polls show about Walz, Vance before VP debate

Ohio Sen. JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential candidate, is less popular among voters than his Democratic rival, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, according to a new survey from The Associated Press-NORC Centre for Public Affairs Research. Both Vance and Walz entered the spotlight this summer as relative political unknowns. As both running mates prepare to address a huge audience in next week's vice-presidential debate, Democrats are more positive about Walz and Vice President Kamala Harris than Republicans are about Vance and former President Donald Trump. The findings of the new survey reinforce the challenge for the Republican presidential ticket as voting begins in more and more states. Vance is less well-liked than Walz The poll shows that negative feelings about Vance are considerably more widespread than positive opinions. About half of registered voters have a somewhat or very unfavourable view of Vance, up from about 4 in 10 in late July, while around one-quarter have a ...

US intel warns Trump on 'real' assassination threat from Iran: Campaign

US intelligence agencies have briefed former president Donald Trump on the "real and specific" threat to his life allegedly from Iran to allegedly "sow chaos" in the country, according to his campaign. Two apparent assassination attempts have been made in the same number of months on the life of the 78-year-old Republican presidential candidate. President Trump was briefed earlier today by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence regarding real and specific threats from Iran to assassinate him in an effort to destabilise and sow chaos in the United States, Steven Cheung, Trump's Campaign communications director said late Tuesday night. Intelligence officials have identified these "continued and coordinated" attacks heightened in the past few months, and law enforcement officials across all agencies are working to ensure Trump is protected and the November election is free from interference, Cheung said. On July 13, the first failed assassination attempt on Trump was made

US elections: Harris has bigger cognitive problems than Biden, claims Trump

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has claimed that his Democratic rival Kamala Harris has a "bigger cognitive problem" than President Joe Biden, who pulled out of the White House bid after a disastrous debate performance. Fears over 81-year-old Biden's age and mental state grew after the June 27 debate between him and Trump. Addressing an election rally in the battleground state of Georgia, Republican Party presidential candidate Trump said the world is "laughing" at 59-year-old Vice President Harris. You know what they're really laughing at? Kamala, because they can't believe that she's going to be president. They can't believe it," Trump, 78, said. "You talk about cognitive problems? She's got bigger cognitive problems than he (Biden) has, in my opinion, Trump alleged. This is how we're going to end the era of inflation and mayhem, misery. Under Kamala and Crooked Joe, we had such misery. Think about what we've been through with inflation, with the wars all over the

Son of suspect in Trump assassination bid arrested over child abuse: FBI

The son of the man suspected in the assassination attempt in Florida of former President Donald Trump has been arrested on federal charges of possessing child sexual abuse images. Oran Routh was arrested this week after authorities searched his Greensboro, North Carolina, home in connection with an investigation unrelated to child exploitation, an FBI official said in court papers. Investigators seized multiple electronic devices and found hundreds of files of child sexual abuse, according the court papers. He faces two charges of possessing and receiving child sexual abuse material. Oran Routh's father is Ryan Routh, who is accused in the assassination attempt of Trump at a golf course in Florida earlier this month. Ryan Routh has been charged with federal gun offenses but prosecutors have indicated much more serious attempted assassination charges were coming. There was no attorney listed for Oran Routh in court papers. Phone messages for Oran Routh and relatives listed in public

Will not run again for president, if lose 2024 elections: Donald Trump

Former President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he doesn't think he'd run again for president in 2028 if he falls short in his bid to return to the White House in 2024. No, I don't. I think that will be, that will be it, Trump said when journalist Sharyl Attkisson asked him if he'd run again. The comment was notable both because Trump seemed to rule out a fourth bid for the White House and because he rarely admits the possibility he could legitimately lose an election. Trump normally insists that could only happen if there were widespread cheating, a false allegation he made in 2020 and he's preemptively made again during his 2024 presidential campaign. Trump would be 82 in 2028, a year older than President Joe Biden is now. Biden bowed out of the race in July following his disastrous debate performance and months of being hammered by Trump and other conservatives as being too old and erratic for the job. Attkisson interviewed Trump for her show Full Measure." Also during the ...
