Communication failures prior to Trump's July assassination bid: Report

Communication breakdowns with local law enforcement hampered the Secret Service's performance ahead of a July assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, according to a new report that lays out a litany of missed opportunities to stop a gunman who opened fire from an unsecured roof. A five-page document summarising the Secret Service report's key conclusions finds fault with both local and federal law enforcement, underscoring the cascading and wide-ranging failings that preceded the July 13 shooting at a Butler, Pennsylvania, campaign rally where Trump was wounded in the ear by gunfire. Though the failed response has been well-documented through congressional testimony, news media investigations and other public statements, the report being released on Friday marks the Secret Service's most formal attempt to catalog the errors of the day and is being released amid fresh scrutiny following Sunday's arrest in Florida of a man who authorities say wanted to kill Trump. It's

Secret Service again faces scrutiny after another gunman targets Trump

For the second time in more than two months, the Secret Service that protects the highest echelon of American leaders is under scrutiny - this time after a gunman hid in the shrubs along the fence of former President Donald Trump's golf course for 12 hours. The man didn't get a shot off, but critics question how he could be just several hundred yards away from Trump - especially after the Republican presidential candidate's security was beefed up after his near-death experience in July. Biden administration officials praised the agency's response, and former Secret Service agents say there are key differences between what unfolded Sunday and the security lapses at an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when a gunman climbed onto an unsecured roof nearby and opened fire, clipping Trump's ear and leaving a spectator dead. Authorities say Ryan Wesley Routh camped with food and a rifle just outside the 27-hole Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida, where the ...

Donald Trump pledges tariffs, repeats false claims of Chinese automakers

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday repeated false claims that Chinese automakers are putting up large factories in Mexico, vowing during a stop in the automaking state of Michigan to slap 200 per cent tariffs on any vehicles the unbuilt plants make and ship to the United States. Trump also claimed during an event in Flint that if Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris is elected in November, there will be no more auto industry in the US, because work building electric vehicles will go to China. That statement came even though automaking employment has grown since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021, after dropping during Trump's first term. If I don't win, you will have no auto industry within two to three years," Trump said, calling any increases under Biden and Harris temporary. You will not have any manufacturing plants. China is going to take over all of them because of the electric car. He told the crowd he would make foreign automakers build factories in th

FBI probes suspicious packages sent to election officials in dozen states

The FBI and the US Postal Inspection Service on Tuesday were investigating the origin of suspicious packages that have been sent to or received by elections officials in more than a dozen states, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or that any of the packages contained hazardous material. The latest packages were sent to elections officials in Georgia, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, and Rhode Island. Mississippi authorities reported a package was delivered there on Monday, and the Connecticut Secretary of State's office on Tuesday also said the FBI alerted them of a suspicious package that was intercepted. The FBI is collecting the letters, some of which contained "an unknown substance," spokesperson Kristen Setera of the agency's Boston office said in a statement. "We are also working with our partners to determine how many letters were sent, the individual or individuals responsible for the letters, and the motive behind the letters," she said. "As this i

Trump blames Biden and Harris' rhetoric towards him despite his own history

Donald Trump claimed without evidence Monday that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris' comments that he is a threat to democracy had inspired the latest apparent attempt on his life, despite his own long history of inflammatory campaign rhetoric and advocacy for jailing or prosecuting his political enemies. With the election now just 50 days away and early ballots already being mailed out in some places, this year's presidential campaign was among the most turbulent in American history even before Sunday's apparent assassination attempt. Trump was safe after the incident in Florida and praised the Secret Service for protecting him but didn't shy away from blaming his opponents. Their rhetoric is causing me to be shot at, when I am the one who is going to save the country and they are the ones that are destroying the country both from the inside and out, Trump said in comments to Fox News Digital. The Republican former president's statements are a sharp departure fr

Trump thanks secret service, police after failed assassination attempt

Former president Donald Trump on Sunday thanked the US Secret Service and other law enforcement officials following an assassination attempt while he was golfing on one of his golf courses in Florida's West Palm Beach. The former president remained unharmed in what the FBI said was "an attempted assassination while playing golf two months after another attempt on his life at a Pennsylvania rally. THE JOB DONE WAS ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. I would like to thank everyone for your concern and well wishes -- It was certainly an interesting day! Most importantly, I want to thank the US Secret Service, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw and his Office of brave and dedicated patriots, and, all of the law enforcement, for the incredible job done today at Trump International in keeping me, as the 45th President of the United States, and the Republican nominee in the upcoming presidential election, SAFE, the presidential candidate said. Another attempt on Trump's life raises questions on security lapses

A second apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump this time as he played golf in Florida has rocked a presidential campaign already marred by unprecedented violence and raised questions about how such a thing could have happened for the second time in as many months. U.S. Secret Service agents opened fire Sunday afternoon on a man who was spotted pointing an AK-style rifle through a fence while hiding in the bushes as Trump golfed at his club in West Palm Beach. The FBI described it as an apparent attempted assassination on the GOP nominee. At a Pennsylvania rally in July, Trump was grazed in the ear by a bullet when a gunman was able to gain access to an unsecured roof, unleashing a hail of bullets that left one of Trump's supporters dead and two others badly injured. While the Secret Service has grappled with how to keep Trump safe as he campaigns across the country, holding rallies that often draw thousands, less attention has focused on his protection wh

Before gay marriage was popular, Harris was supporting equal rights for all

Two decades ago, when a Democratic presidential nominee wouldn't dream of endorsing gay marriage, a newly elected district attorney named Kamala Harris was performing one of the first same-sex unions in the United States. It was the so-called Winter of Love in San Francisco. The mayor at the time, Gavin Newsom, had directed the county clerk to approve gay marriages even though there was no law on the books recognising them. His act of rebellion prompted a bipartisan political backlash, but Harris had no hesitation. You could tell she was so overwhelmed and had so much joy about performing this ceremony," said Brad Witherspoon, whose marriage to Raymond Cobane was officiated by Harris on Valentine's Day 2004. The moment represents a stark difference between Harris and all previous Democratic presidential nominees, who didn't begin their political careers as gay marriage supporters. Four years after the Winter of Love, the issue was still off the table during the party's primary. And

Harris promotes her resume rather than race as she courts Black voters

While President Joe Biden was hosting a celebration of Black excellence at the White House with lawmakers, advocates and celebrities this past week, Kamala Harris was instead headed off to Pennsylvania. The nation's first Black vice president talked with Pennsylvania voters about supporting small businesses, building more housing and expanding the child tax credit. She said the country needs a president of the United States who works for all the American people. What she did not do was spend time talking about her race or gender or the prospect that she would be the nation's first Black and South Asian woman to be president if she defeated Republican Donald Trump. As Harris courts voters, she embodies her identity as a woman of colour rather than making it an overt part of her pitch, choosing instead to emphasize her policies and resume. She will be making her case to minority voters in a number of key settings in the coming days. She is scheduled to speak on Saturday night at a ..
