UP no longer BIMARU, on way to becoming 'saksham', says CM Adityanath

Uttar Pradesh has moved out of the BIMARU category and is on its way to becoming a "saksham" state, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Tuesday. Adityanath's remarks come a day after the NITI Aayog said India witnessed 13.5 crore people moving out of multi-dimensional poverty between 2015-16 and 2019-21, with the fastest reduction being in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh. The BIMARU (sick in Hindi) acronym has often been used to refer to Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, usually to imply that these states lagged in terms of economic growth, health care, education, and other indices. The report -- "National Multidimensional Poverty Index: A Progress of Review 2023" -- was released by NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Suman Bery on Monday. Providing estimates for the 36 states and Union Territories and 707 administrative districts, the report said the fastest reduction in the proportion of multi-dimensional poor was observed in Uttar Pradesh, ..

India's infrastructure was in poor shape before 2014: CM Adityanath

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday alleged the government at the Centre before 2014 was characterised by indecision and corruption which affected the growth of the country's infrastructure. "There is a noticeable difference. India's infrastructure was in poor shape prior to 2014. The four-lane, six-lane, and eight-lane roads built during the time of Atal ji (former PM Atal Behari Vajpayee) were doing well, but no new projects were pursued (by the UPA government)," he said after the inauguration of two national highway projects worth Rs 3,300 crore here. Criticising the government at the helm before 2014, he said, "The government was suffering from indecision, and corruption was rampant." "In the last nine years, you must have seen that India is becoming self-reliant in the field of security. Today, the enemy cannot look at India with evil intentions. The Defence Corridor of Lucknow is realising the vision of Make in India in Uttar Pradesh itself," the CM said. H

SC grants anticipatory bail to Umar Ansari in evacuee property case

The Supreme Court on Monday granted anticipatory bail to jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari's son Umar Ansari in an evacuee property case. A bench of Justices A S Bopanna and M M Sundresh issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government on his plea challenging an order of the Allahabad High Court. The high court on April 13 had dismissed Umar's plea seeking anticipatory bail.It had also dismissed a plea of Mukhtar Ansari's other son Abbas Ansari, an SBSP MLA, seeking quashing of the charge sheet in the same case. It passed the orders on two petitions moved independently by the two brothers. It was pleaded on behalf of the Ansari brothers that mutation of the property was in the name of their forefathers before their birth and hence, no offence was made out against them. The state counsel had opposed the plea, arguing that the duo was also accused of forging the signature of their grandmother and hence, a clear offence was made out against them. Selfishness has infested the opposition unity, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma claimed here on Monday, ahead of the two-day meeting of the BJP's rival parties in Bengaluru. "The (opposition) clan was never united. Internal cracks have always been there. With termite infestation, things become hollow from the inside.
