Ten people were killed in rain-related incidents in the past 24 hours, the Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner said in a statement issued at 9 pm on Saturday, as showers continue to lash the state. "In the past 24 hours, while two (people) died due to drowning in Rampur, seven were killed due to lightning (strike) in Ballia, Mahoba and Lalitpur districts. One person died of snakebite in Sultanpur," the statement said. According to the Irrigation Department, the Ganga is flowing above the danger level in Budaun. In Bulandshahr and Farrukhabad, the river is approaching the danger mark. The Yamuna is also flowing close to the danger level in Parayagraj. In Mathura, the water level of the Yamuna continues to rise after crossing the danger mark, an official said. Many villages in the district's Mant area are surrounded by water, acres of crops have been destroyed. Home and roads in low-lying areas of Mathura and Vrindavan have been flooded, he said. An MP/MLA court here on Saturday sentenced senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan to two years imprisonment in a case of provocative speech during the 2019 general elections. Judge Shobhit Bansal convicted Khan and sentenced him to two years imprisonment. He also imposed a fine of Rs. 2500 on the former Uttar Pradesh minister. The case was registered against Khan during the 2019 Lok Sabha general election for allegedly making a provocative speech during a rally in the Dhamora area on April 8 that year. An MP-MLA court here had last year convicted Khan in another 2019 hate speech case which was registered after he addressed a public meeting in Khatanagaria village of the Milak Kotwali area. He was sentenced to three years of imprisonment, following which he was disqualified from the UP assembly. In May this year, a sessions court overturned the verdict of the lower court.
Among the thousands of people impacted by the floods along Yamuna banks in Noida this week, there were hundreds who were hired as help in farmhouses built illegally in the low-lying areas near the river, officials said. Government officials said the workers and staffers of the farmhouses thousands in number were not moved to safety in time even as advisories were issued well before the area got inundated. These farmhouses are located near Nagli Wajidpur village in Sector 135 on the other side of the pushta (embankment) towards the Yamuna some two kms off the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. "More than 500 such people were evacuated on Thursday and Friday from the farmhouses. As water entered the ground level, many of those stranded, including women, had taken shelter on second storey of the farmhouses. A court here on Friday reserved its order for July 21 on a petition seeking a scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque located next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple. The petition filed by the Hindu side of the case had sought a direction to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to survey the entire Gyanvapi mosque complex. "We had put before the court the demand for an archaeological and scientific investigation of the entire Gyanvapi complex except the 'vajukhana'. After hearing both sides, the court reserved the verdict for July 21," said Vishnu Shankar Jain, the counsel for the Hindu side. Jain said he argued that the Kashi Vishwanath temple-Gyanvapi mosque dispute can be resolved only by an archaeological investigation of the entire mosque complex.
Realty firm Saya Group on Wednesday said it will invest Rs 100 crore to develop 336 studio apartments in Greater Noida. The company will sell these 336 fully furnished studio apartments at around Rs 55 lakh. The size of each studio apartments will be around 700 square feet. "We are developing 336 studio apartments in Noida Extension (Greater Noida West). This is part of our 3-acre high street retail project Saya South X," Saya Group MD Vikas Bhasin told reporters. With a view to allotting plots for industrial projects on a large scale, the Uttar Pradesh government will organise a mega e-auction on Thursday, officials said. The online auction would be held from 10 am for industrial plots in Lucknow, Kanpur, Trans Delhi Signature City, Ayodhya, Agra, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Bareilly, Gorakhpur and Aligarh, they said. A total of 154 industrial plots, 3 group housing, one nursing home, 8 plots for warehouse and others will be put up for the auction. The e-auction is being organised by Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Department (UPSIDA), they said. For participation in this mega bidding process, depositing fees including application, catalogue downloading, document filing and downloading has already been completed through online medium. The Allahabad High Court on Monday dismissed a writ petition filed by the Shri Krishna Janambhoomi Mukti Nirman Trust requesting the court to direct the Mathura civil judge to decide its application for scientific survey of Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah mosque premises first before deciding the objections raised against the suit. The objections against the suit were raised by the management committee of the mosque and Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday reached Gorakhpur to attend the closing ceremony of the centenary celebrations of Gita Press and flag off Vande Bharat trains. Upon his arrival, Modi was welcomed by Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. At Gita Press, the world's largest publisher of Hindu religious textbooks, the prime minister will release the chitramaya Shiva Purana granth and also visit the Leela Chitra temple there. Gita Press was recently conferred with the Gandhi Peace Prize for 2021 by a jury headed by PM Modi. The prize is an annual award instituted by the central government in 1995 and it carries a prize money of Rs 1 crore, a citation, plaque and a traditional handicraft or handloom item.
