T20I career
 
Shankar was picked for India's Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for the 2018 Nidahas Trophy. He made his T20I debut for India against Sri Lanka in the tournament on 6 March 2018. In the second match of the 2018 Nidahas Trophy, he took two wickets for 32 runs and was named the player of the match.
 
He has played nine T20s for India so far and scored 101 nuns with an average of 25.25 and a strike rate of 138.36. He has also picked 5 wickets with an average of 38.20 and an economy rate of 9.1.
 
Test career
 
On 20 November 2017, he was named in India's Test squad for their series against Sri Lanka as a replacement for an injured Bhuvneshwar Kumar, but he did not play.
 
ODI career
 
He made his ODI debut on 18 January 2019 in third and final ODI against Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground. He replaced Hardik Pandya, who had been banned for a controversial remark on a TV chat show.
 
On 5 March 2019, He took his first ODI wicket (Marcus Stoinis) against Australia in Nagpur and removed Adam Zampa in the final over. He also scored 46 with the bat to help India win the match by 8 runs.
 
Vijay has played 9 ODIs for India in which he has scored 165 runs at an average of 33.00 and a strike rate of 96.49. He has also taken 2 wickets in as many matches with an average of 94.00 and an economy rate of 5.61.


 
IPL career
 
Vijay Shankar was bought by Chennai Super Kings in 2014 and he played a match for the franchise. In 2017, he played for Sunrisers Hyderabad. In January 2018, he was bought by the Delhi Daredevils and traded back to Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2019 IPL season.
 
In 33 IPL matches, he has scored 557 runs with an average of 30.94 and a strike rate of 133.80. He has scored two fifties and his best score is 63. He has taken two wicket so far in IPL with an economy rate of 10.07.
