Militants using hideouts away from habitations indicate dwindling of their support base: officials

In an indication of further shrinkage of the militants' support base in the valley, more and more cases of outlaws using cave-like hideouts away from the human habitations are surfacing, say security personnel. A police official made this remark Wednesday after security forces busted an underground hideout of militants in Awantipora area of Pulwama district where some of the top Hizbul Mujahideen commanders were believed to be hiding. The official said a search operation was launched in the area on early Wednesday on a tip off about the presence of militants in the hideout -- a cave-like structure made in a hillock. Though nothing incriminating could by found by the security forces, there were tell-tale signs of the hideout having been used recently by militants, the official said. The ultras appeared to have deserted it hours before the security forces launched the search operation. This cave-like hideout, away from the human habitations, was detected Wednesday, barely days after ...

13 Nigerian troops, policeman killed in Boko Haram attack

Boko Haram jihadists ambushed a military convoy in northeastern Nigeria, killing 13 soldiers and a policeman, the army said Wednesday. But an officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the militants had overrun an army base, and put the death toll at 18. An army statement said the attackers ambushed a military convoy late Monday on a highway linking Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, with Damaturu in neighbouring Yobe state. "Sadly, 13 military and a police personnel... paid the supreme price while extricating themselves from the ambush," said the statement, signed by local military spokesman Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu. The attack followed an attempted raid on a nearby military base along the highway in Kukareta village, 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Damaturu, Nwachukwu said. That attack was "repelled" by troops who "engaged and overpowered the terrorists, killing several of them", Nwachukwu said, adding that a soldier was injured. Other security sources said fighters ...

Suicide attack on Pakistanis in Afghanistan kills 6

An Afghan official says a suicide bomber disguised as a beggar has killed six people in a wealthy subdivision of the southern city of Kandahar. Mohammad Yousof Younosi, a provincial council member, says the attack on Tuesday happened a block away from his home and appeared to have targeted a group of Pakistanis from that country's Baluchistan region. No one immediately claimed the attack. Several militant and separatist groups operate in Baluchistan. Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of sheltering Baluch separatists, including those behind a deadly attack on the Chinese Consulate in Karachi earlier this month. Journalist Abderrazak Zorgui posted a video online before his self-immolation in the struggling provincial city of Kasserine describing his desperation and calling for revolt. He expressed frustration at unemployment and the unfulfilled promises of Tunisia's 2011 Arab Spring revolution. Authorities said Zorgui died of his injuries Monday soon after being taken to the hospital. His actions prompted a protest Monday night in Kasserine that degenerated into violence, with police firing tear gas to disperse protesters who blocked roads and threw stones at police. Car bomb in Iraq's Tal Afar kills two

At least two people were killed and 11 others wounded on Tuesday when a car bomb rocked the former jihadist stronghold of Tal Afar in northern Iraq, officials said. "A car bomb exploded near a cafe in the Ras al-Jadah district in the centre of Tal Afar," said Abed Alaal Abbas, an official in the city some 70 kilometres (40 miles) west of Mosul. The blast "killed two and wounded 11 other civilians", he told AFP. Iraq's joint operations command confirmed the toll. There was no immediate claim for the attack, the first in Tal Afar since Iraqi forces retook the city from the Islamic State group in August last year. The recapture of the city, which lies between Mosul and the Syrian border, was hailed as a major victory against the jihadists, who seized nearly one third of Iraq in a sweeping 2014 offensive.
