Myanmar policeman found killed in northern Rakhine state

The bullet-riddled body of a Myanmar policeman was found in northern Rakhine state, government media said Sunday, as tensions rise in the hotspot where the Rohingya crisis erupted last year. The western territory is a tinderbox of ethnic and religious divisions and security forces have clashed with both Rohingya insurgents and much better armed Rakhine fighters from the mostly Buddhist Arakan Army. Private Aung Kyaw Thet went missing in action after an ambush last week by unknown assailants in Maungdaw township near the border with Bangladesh. His body was found two days ago with "gunshot wounds in his face, arm and leg near a hill inside the other country," according to government-backed Global New Light of Myanmar. The ambush happened the same day that two ethnic Rakhine Buddhist men disappeared while fishing in the same township and were later found with their throats slit, prompting the army to launch local "clearance operations" and raising fears of renewed large-scale ...

Honduran president during US-funded 'Contra' war on Nicaragua dies

Roberto Suazo Cordova, president of Honduras during the US-financed "Contra" war against Nicaragua of the 1980s, died on Saturday, officials said. Suazo, who was president from 1982 to 1986, was being treated at a military hospital near Tegucigalpa for cardiac issues when he died, the Honduran armed forces spokesman told AFP. He was 91. Suazo became president after the United States pressured the Honduran military to leave after two decades in power, part of a broader effort to counter the advances of leftist movements in Central America. Then US president Ronald Reagan feared an expansion of Cuban and Soviet influence in the region after dictator Anastasio Somoza in neighboring Nicaragua was toppled by the leftist Sandinista insurgency in July 1979. Under Suazo's presidency US officials financed an irregular army of mostly Nicaraguan ex-Somoza National Guard soldiers to launch cross-border attacks against the Sandinistas. This force of "Contras" at its height had 16,000 fighters, but

France's 'yellow vests' block borders ahead of Christmas

Three days from Christmas, French "yellow vests" turned out in small numbers for a sixth Saturday of protests in cities and border points as a fatal road accident brought the death toll to 10 since the movement began last month. Near the border between France and Spain hundreds of protesters disrupted traffic as they gathered around an autoroute toll booth. Police fired tear gas to disperse the "yellow vests" who retreated to a bridge, throwing objects on the road, an AFP photographer at the scene said. "The autoroute is now being cleaned to allow traffic to resume normally," local authorities said. France borders the Catalan region of Spain, and the French protesters were joined by dozens of Catalan pro-independence activists, also wearing yellow vests. The separatists often block highways to protest against Madrid's rejection of Catalonia's independence referendum in October 2017. Even though their goals are different, "this demonstration at the Boulou (toll booth) is symbolic, it ..
