Lebanon: Israel destroying border tunnels won't affect calm

Lebanon's president said Tuesday that Israel's operation to destroy what it says is a series of cross-border attack tunnels built by the militant Hezbollah group won't endanger the calm along the frontier, adding that his country takes the issue seriously. Michel Aoun, a Hezbollah ally, said that Lebanon is prepared to address the issue after assessing a full report on the situation. Aoun said the United States has informed Lebanon that Israel has "no aggressive intentions," adding that his country harbored none either. "We are ready to remove the causes of the disagreements, but after we get the full report and decide what are the issues we need to handle," Aoun said. Israel launched an operation to destroy a series of tunnels last week, showing one to U.N. peacekeepers and calling it a violation of the cease-fire that ended the 2006 war with Hezbollah. The peacekeeping force, or UNIFIL, has confirmed the presence of two tunnels. On Tuesday, the mission's head, Maj. Stefano Del Col, .

The soaring Arc de Triomphe at the top of the Champs-Elysees in Paris will reopen Wednesday after being covered in graffiti and ransacked during anti-government protests which rocked the capital on December 1, the French monuments commission said. The arc, under which lies the tomb of the unknown soldier, commemorating France's war dead, has been a focal point of the "yellow vest" rallies against fuel tax increases and the cost of living which began on November 17. But the demonstrations degenerated into daylong clashes with police early this month, with protesters spray-painting the arc with slogans such as "the yellow vests will win." The protesters later managed to break into the monument where they smashed sculptures and display cases in an underground gallery and snatched commemorative medals and other items. They also snuffed out the eternal flame burning on the tomb of the unknown soldier. Some protesters were also seen on the top of the landmark building which offers panoramic

Armed police detain man outside British parliament

Armed police detained a man on the grounds of the British parliament on Tuesday, at almost exactly the same spot where an attack occurred last year, an AFP photographer saw. London's Metropolitan Police did not immediately respond to a request for information about the incident, while parliamentary authorities said police were handling it. The BBC cited police saying the incident was not terror-related. In March last year, Khalid Masood, a British Muslim convert, rammed a car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before fatally stabbing a policeman on guard outside parliament. The attack, which left five people dead and around 50 injured, ended only when police shot the 52-year-old Masood dead.

UN says Islamic State kills 6 captives in Libya

The UN mission to Libya says Islamic State militants have killed six people captured during an attack on a small town in October. The UN statement late Monday condemned the killing as "particularly abhorrent," without providing further details. The six were captured on October 28 during an attack on the town of al-Fuqaha. The town is south of the coastal city of Sirte, a former IS-held bastion. The attack underscored the volatility of Libya's central region, where IS and other armed groups, including some from neighbouring Chad, operate as highway robbers or attack patrols of the self-styled Libyan National Army. Libya plunged into chaos after the 2011 uprising and is now governed by rival administrations based in country's east and west.

Israeli troops kill Palestinian after suspected car ramming

The baby remains in critical condition. Following that attack, Israeli forces carried out raids in the West Bank city of Ramallah in search of the gunmen, including into the offices of the official Palestinian news agency.
