5 LeT, HM militants killed in encounter in J&K; civilian killed in protests

Five Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants, including the one involved in last year's deadly attack on a cash van in which five policemen and two bank guards lost their lives, were killed in an encounter Saturday in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. A civilian was killed and 10 others injured in clashes near the encounter site when protesting youths started pelting stones at the security forces, an official said. Security forces had launched a search operation late on Friday night in Chowgam area of Qazigund in south Kashmir's Kulgam district based on inputs about the presence of militants in the area, a police spokesman said. He said during the search operation, militants fired on the search party. "First, the civilians were moved away from the site of encounter to safer locations. Rwandan opposition leader released from jail

Rwandan opposition leader Victoire Ingabire was unexpectedly freed from jail on Saturday after President Paul Kagame permitted her early release, alongside two thousand other prisoners. "I thank the president who gave me this liberation," Ingabire said as she left Mageragere Prison in the capital Kigali. "This is the beginning of the opening of political space in Rwanda, I hope so," she added calling on Kagame "to release other political prisoners." The surprise release of 2,140 prisoners, including Ingabire and musician Kizito Mihigo, followed a cabinet meeting on Friday at which a presidential order of "mercy" was approved. Ingabire returned from exile in the Netherlands intending to run for president in 2010 as leader of the FDU-Inkingi party. However, she was arrested, charged with terrorism and treason and sentenced in 2012 to 10 years in jail after a widely criticised trial. Civilian killed, 10 injured as clashes break out after Kulgam encounter

A civilian was killed and 10 others were injured Saturday in clashes between protestors and security forces following an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district, in which five militants were killed, police said. Clashes broke out between groups of youths and security forces, who were engaged in the counter-militancy operation, at the Chowgam area of Qazigund in Kulgam, a police official said. He said security forces used tear smoke shells, pellets and opened firing to quell the protests. Over 10 persons were injured in the forces' action and they were taken to the district hospital in Anantnag for treatment, the official said. He added that out of those injured, six, including four with pellet injuries in the eyes, were referred to a hospital here, but one Rouf Ahmad, a resident of Chee in Anantnag, succumbed to injuries on the way near Sangam. Russia holds naval drills in Sea of Japan

Russian troops taking part in the country's largest-ever war games on Saturday held drills in the Sea of Japan, despite Tokyo's concerns about a Russian military buildup in the area. The exercises were part of the Vostok-18, or East-18, war games that kicked off in eastern Russia on September 11 and will run until Monday. Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu has described the week-long operation, which involves nearly 300,000 soldiers, 36,000 vehicles, 1,000 planes and 80 warships, as Russia's biggest-ever war games. Army jawan injured as Pakistan violates ceasefire along LoC in J-K

An Army jawan was injured in a ceasefire violation by Pakistani troops along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, a defence spokesman said. The Pakistani troops resorted to small arms firing on forward posts in Noushera sector from across the border at around 10.30 am, the spokesman said. The injured person was rushed to the Command Hospital at Udhampur, he said, adding that his condition was stated to be stable. According to officials, Indian troops guarding the LoC also fired in retaliation and the firing between the two sides continued for quite some time.

Kulgam encounter: 5 terrorists gunned down

Five terrorists have been killed in an encounter that broke out earlier in the day in Chowgam area of Qazigund town here.According to a Kashmir Police release, the terrorists involved in the encounter were a part of proscribed outfits Hijbul Mujahiddin and Lashkar-e-Taiba.The killed terrorists were identified as Gulzar Ahmad Padder, Faisal Ahmad Rather, Zahid Ahmad Mir, Masroor Molvi and Zahoor Ahmad Lone.Arms and ammunition have also been seized from the site of encounter. Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the matter.Police and security forces were carrying out a search operation based on an input about the presence of terrorists in the area.Inspector General of Police SP Pani stated that a search operation is underway.In the wake of the encounter, train services between Baramulla and Qazigund were suspended.

Five militants belonging to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) were killed in an encounter with security forces in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir Saturday, officials said. Five militants have been killed in the operation at Chowgam in Kulgam district of south Kashmir, an Army official said here. He said weapons and war-like stores have been recovered from the encounter site. The operation is over, the official said. The encounter between the militants and security forces began this morning after the forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in the area following intelligence inputs about the presence of militants there. While the forces were conducting the searches, the militants fired upon the forces, ensuing a gunfight. A police official said the militants belonged to two outfits of LeT and HM and their killing was a huge success for the forces. "It is a huge success for police and security forces. Boko Haram jihadis kill eight in NE Nigeria: militia

Boko Haram gunmen killed eight people when they attacked two villages in restive northeast Nigeria in an attempt to steal livestock Friday, local militia said. The jihadists moved into Modu Ajiri and Bulama Kayiri villages in Borno state to take cattle and sheep but the villagers put up a fight to save their livestock. "Fighting erupted when the villagers tried to stop the attackers," local militia spokesman Bunu Bukar Mustapha told AFP. Police seizes liquor worth lakh of rupees in Nagaland

The police Friday seized around 60 cases of liquor worth lakhs of rupees and also sealed several shops selling liquor here, a senior police officer said. 3 unexploded shells found at Tosamaidan in J-K's Budgam, exploded by bomb disposal squad

Three unexploded shells were Friday recovered and exploded by a bomb disposal squad at Tosamaidan meadow in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district, police said. Three unexploded shells were recovered and exploded by the bomb disposal squad and the Army at Tosamaidan in the central Kashmir district, a police official said. He added that there was no loss of life or injury in the incident. Tosamaidan was until recently used as an artillery firing range by the Army. It was thrown open for tourists in 2016.
