The Russian military on Wednesday confirmed air strikes were carried out on Syria's last major rebel stronghold Idlib with warplanes targeting the "terrorist" Al-Nusra Front on Tuesday. "Four planes of the Russian group at the Khmeimim airbase inflicted strikes by high-precision weapons on objects of the Al-Nusra Front terrorist group in the Idlib province," the Russian military's spokesman Igor Konashenkov said in a statement. A wanted criminal and two cops were injured in an encounter in Kandhai area here on Wednesday, a senior police official said. The encounter took place near Ganaideeh village when a police team stopped a bike carrying three persons and they started firing, Superintendent of Police Dev Ranjan Verma said. In exchange of fire wanted criminal Javed and two constables Vishwas Kumar and Bhola were injured, he said. Javed was wanted in connection with a number of cases, including murder and loot. Militants opened fire on a patrol party of the security forces at Haji Darpora in Litter area of Pulwama, a police official said. Army troops foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir and killed an intruder Wednesday, an Army officer said. A suspicious movement was picked up along the LoC in Rajouri Sector in the early hours. "One intruder was spotted and was challenged. The intruder opened fire on troops closing in and the Army retaliated effectively," the officer said. Six people were killed Tuesday in the southern Iraqi city of Basra in ongoing unrest, as protesters rally against economic woes and the dire state of public services. Seven people, including a doctor, have been arrested for looting medicines worth Rs 2 crore when the consignment was being transported in a lorry last month, the police said Tuesday. The accused were arrested Monday and the looted drugs recovered from them. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vaibhav Krishna, the consignment was looted near Amrala Gate on the intervening night of August 13 and 14. The medicine consignment was being transported from a warehouse in Partapur in Meerut to Agra.
