Shopian encounter: Two JeM militants, civilian killed

Two Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants, including a Pakistani national, were today killed in an encounter while a civilian died and 20 others sustained injuries during clashes with security forces near the scene of gunbattle in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. A police spokesman said a joint patrol of the security forces launched searches in the Kundallan area of the district in the early hours today following credible leads about the presence of terrorists there. As the searches were going on, militants hiding inside the house fired upon the search party, who in their guarded response fired back, leading to an encounter, he said. The spokesman said some civilians in the nearby houses were quickly evacuated by the security forces. Rajnath to visit Bangladesh from July 13

Home Minister Rajnath Singh will pay a three-day visit to Bangladesh beginning July 13, during which he will hold discussions on various issues including anti-terror cooperation, attempts by terror groups to radicalise youths and Rohingya refugees, officials said today. During the visit, the home minister is expected to meet Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and discuss various bilateral issues. In his meeting with Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Singh will discuss ways to strengthen the anti-terror mechanism between the two countries and check radicalisation of youths by terrorist groups, a Home Ministry official said. 12 killed in suicide attack on Afghan security forces: Officials

A suicide attacker blew himself up near an Afghan security forces vehicle today, killing at least 12 people, mostly civilians, officials said, in the latest deadly violence to rock the country. The explosion in the eastern city of Jalalabad also left at least five people wounded and set a nearby petrol station alight, the provincial governor's spokesman Attaullah Khogyani told AFP. Some of the victims were brought to hospital with severe burns, health director Najibullah Kamawal said, confirming the casualty toll. "I saw a big ball of fire that threw people away. The people were burning," Esmatullah, who witnessed the incident, told AFP. NSCN militant arrested

A militant belonging to the NSCN was apprehended by security forces in Longding district of Arunachal Pradesh. Kohima-based defence spokesman Colonel Chiranjit Konwer said he was arrested by the Longding Battalion of Assam Rifles from Zedua Village yesterday. The Longding Battalion, under the aegis of Dao Division of the Army, has been carrying out operations in south Arunachal Pradesh to keep the area peaceful, Konwer said in a statement.

Man killed during clashes with security forces near encounter site

A man was killed while 20 others were injured today in clashes between stone-pelters and security forces near an encounter site in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir where two militants were killed. Tamsheel Ahmad Khan of Vehil in Shopian died after suffering head injuries during the clashes near Kundullan, a police official said. He said 20 other persons were injured of which eight were referred to hospitals here for specialised treatment. Some people had assembled near the encounter site and indulged in stone-pelting on security forces, who were engaged in an anti-militancy operation, officials said. Two militants were killed in the operation that was launched in the wee hours today after security forces got a tip off about presence of the ultras in the area.

Rebel attack in northwest Syria kills 27 regime fighters: Monitor

More than two dozen pro-government fighters were killed in northwestern Syria overnight in a joint attack by rebel and Islamist forces, a monitor said today. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the surprise offensive late Monday targeted a pair of villages and observation points in the coastal province and regime stronghold of Latakia, near the Turkish border. "At least 27 regime forces and allied fighters, including eight officers, were killed in fierce clashes and shelling in the village of Al-Ateira," said Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman. "They took Al-Ateira and kicked out regime forces from several observation points after killing or wounding them." Another 40 government loyalists were wounded and six rebels were killed, he said. The death toll made the attack the bloodiest opposition assault on the area in three years, according to the Observatory. 10 killed in Jalalabad suicide bombing

As many as ten people were killed and four others wounded in a suicide attack in Nangarhar's Jalalabad city on Tuesday morning.This came nearly ten days after 19 people were killed in another suicide bombing. Most of the killed were from the Sikh community.As per TOLO News, the attack took place at around 10 am (local time) in Jalalabad's PD6, a spokesman for the provincial governor, Attaullah Khoghyani confirmed.Reports initially suggested that a fuel station had caught fire. Later officials denied it.As per the report, a number of cars parked in the area and shops in the vicinity have incurred damage due to the explosion.So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Teenager injured in clashes dies

A 17-year-old boy, who was injured in alleged firing by security forces during clashes at Nadihal in Baramulla district last month, succumbed at a hospital here today, the police said. Ubaid Manzoor Lone, who was injured on June 25, succumbed to injuries at SKIMS Hospital here this morning, a police official said. Lone was laid to rest at a graveyard in his native village and hundreds of residents participated in his funeral prayers.

UN: 1 in 4 children live in country of conflict or disaster

About a quarter of the world's children about 535 million are living in a country affected by conflict or disaster, the head of the UN children's agency said yesterday. India says disappointed at UN chief's report on children and armed conflict

India has expressed disappointment that UN chief Antonio Guterres' report on children and armed conflict, saying it includes situations that do not meet the definition of armed conflict or of threat to international peace and security. India's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Tanmaya Lal, participating at the Security Council debate on Children and Armed Conflict here yesterday, said that the UNSC Resolution 1379 requests the Secretary General to report on situations that are on the agenda of the Security Council or that may be brought to the attention of the Security Council by the Secretary General, which in his opinion threaten the maintenance of international peace and security. The report makes a reference to Kashmir, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. India reiterates support to UN's efforts for protecting children in armed conflicts

Deputy Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations (UN) Tanmaya Lal has reiterated India's strong support for the United Nations' endeavours towards protecting children in situations of armed conflict.Addressing at a UN Security Council meeting on "Protecting Children Today Prevents Conflict Tomorrow", Ambassador Lal said, "Despite persistent efforts spanning over the last two decades, the rights of millions of children continue to be violated in situations of armed conflict in different parts of the world."He further said, "Some progress has been made in the implementation of the provisions of the UNSC resolutions on children and armed conflict through greater engagement between the UN agencies and the governments concerned as well as through the integration of children rights issues in the mediation processes.
