J&K: Jawan injured in encounter with militants, 3 civilians hurt in clashes with security forces

A security personnel was injured in a gunbattle with militants while three civilians were hurt during clashes with law enforcing agencies near the encounter site in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district, police said. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in a village in Shopian following information about the presence of militants there, a police official said. He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the militants opened fire on the security forces, who retaliated. The official said a jawan was injured in the exchange of fire with the militants. He said a large number of civilians rushed towards the encounter site at Kundullan and started pelting stones at security personnel. Three civilians were injured in action by security forces to chase away the protestors, he said. The encounter as well as the clashes in the outer periphery of the cordoned area were going on when reports last came in, he said.

US extends support to Afghan-Taliban peace talks

Tunisia pays tribute to security forces killed in jihadist attack

Tunisia paid tribute today to six members of its security forces killed the day before along the border with Algeria in the country's bloodiest jihadist attack in more than two years. The attack comes as Tunisia prepares for what it hopes will be a surge in tourism after a spate of jihadist attacks in 2015 sent visitor numbers plunging. After the ceremony at the national guard base close to the capital, hundreds of people watched as several of the dead were laid to rest. 2 BSF jawans killed in Chhattisgarh IED blast

Two Border Security Force (BSF) constables lost their lives in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast in Chhattisgarh's Kanker district on Monday.The incident took place at around 05:00 pm near south of Marbeda camp, which lies under the jurisdiction of Chhottebediya police station.Santosh Laxman and Vijaynand Nayak, who were residents of Karnataka, were posted under the paramilitary force's 121 Battalion.Deputy Inspector General (anti-naxal operations) Chhattisgarh Police, P Sundarraj confirmed that both of the constable were on area domination duty.Last month, two jawans of 231 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were injured in an IED blast by the Naxals in Dantewada.Earlier on May 20, six jawans were killed and one was injured in an IED blast in Dantewada's Cholnar village.

Maha finance minister justifies supplementary demands in House

Maharashtra Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar today justified the tabling of supplementary demands worth Rs 11,445 crore, saying they are meant for the welfare of farmers and backward classes. Replying to a debate on the supplementary demands, which were tabled in the Legislative Assembly last week, Mungantiwar (BJP) said the erstwhile Congress-led government had also raised supplementary demands worth over Rs 1 lakh crore in the last five years of its rule ahead of 2014. The Opposition has been accusing the BJP-led government of "fiscal mismanagement" by incurring huge debt. "What is important is the intention behind raising the supplementary demands and its allocation. The money is being spent on measures like the welfare of farmers and remuneration for anganwadi workers. Jammu: CRPF launches mobile help centre 'Saathi' for Amarnath pilgrims

The CRPF today launched a mobile help centre to reach out to people undertaking the annual pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre high holy cave shrine of Amarnath. The initiative 'Sathi' was launched by the Inspector General of the CRPF, Jammu Sector. "A need was felt to provide help and information to yatris staying in other camps outside the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu. "To achieve this objective, Mobile Help Center 'Saathi' was flagged off by Inspector General of CRPF, Jammu Sector, Abhay Vir Chauhan," a CFRPF spokesman said. He said this is in addition to various initiative taken by the largest paramilitary force in the world to help the pilgrims. Iraq says airstrike has killed 20 IS militants outside Mosul

An Iraqi military spokesman says an airstrike has killed 20 Islamic State militants outside the northern city of Mosul. In a statement issued on Monday, Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasool says the slain militants were hiding inside a tunnel in Badoush area northwest of Mosul. Rasool says the strike was carried out by the U.S.-led coalition. He didn't give a date for the strike. In the early days of IS' onslaught in June 2014 in northern Iraq, the militants killed some 600 male Shiite inmates from Baduosh prison. Over the past three years, IS has gradually been driven out of nearly all the territory it once held in Syria and Iraq. But the group still maintains a presence in the Syrian desert and remote areas along the Syria-Iraq border.

Security situation in north-east has improved "drastically": Rajnath

The security situation in North East has "improved drastically" during the four years of NDA government, with insurgency related incidents coming down by 85 per cent as compared to the 90s, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said today. The government is giving special attention to the internal security in the region, Singh said, addressing the 67th plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) here. He stressed on the need for a forum to address inter-state and security-related issues, including boundary disputes, narcotics and arms trafficking, and common approaches for tackling terrorism and militancy in the region. Assam Rifles jawan killed, 3 injured in IED explosion in Manipur

One Assam Rifles jawan was killed and three others were injured in an IED explosion carried out by militants near the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur's Kamjong district today, a senior police officer said. The militants had planted a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) near Kangpat village in the district. They triggered the explosion, in which one Assam Rifles jawan was killed and three others were injured this morning, he added. Security reinforcements, including Manipur police personnel, were rushed to the area to carry out a combing operation, the officer said.
