Syrian troops celebrate recapture of border crossing

Syrian soldiers are celebrating the recapture of the main border crossing with Jordan, raising portraits of President Bashar Assad and tearing down rebel flags. Troops captured the Naseeb border crossing a day earlier, after rebels announced they had reached an agreement with Russian mediators to end the violence in the southern province of Daraa and surrender the crossing. State-run Ikhbariya TV showed troops at the crossing Saturday, some flashing victory signs and pumping fists in the air. One officer told the TV that troops have taken up positions along the border with Jordan and are removing illegal crossing points. The rebels seized control of the crossing in 2015, severing a lifeline for Syrian exports and disrupting a trade route between Syria and Jordan, Lebanon and the oil-rich Gulf countries.

The unrest has shone a light on tensions in deprived urban areas of France, where local youths often complain about heavy-handed policing and brutality. The officer had initially claimed he acted in self-defence while trying to arrest the 22-year-old in the city of Nantes on Tuesday, but later told investigators he had fired his weapon by accident. "He recognises he made a statement that did not conform with the truth," his lawyer Laurent-Franck Lienard told AFP. The victim, identified as Aboubakar Fofana, died from a single bullet wound to the neck on Tuesday evening after police stopped him in his car in the Breil neighbourhood of Nantes -- home to a large public housing estate with a history of gang violence. Police initially said that Aboubakar, who was under ...

Start paying your bills: Trump to NATO members

Ahead of the NATO Summit in Brussels next week, President Donald Trump has said he would ask NATO members to start paying their bills as the US is not going to take care of everything. Trump will travel to Brussels, the headquarters of NATO in Belgium, on Monday where he is expected to call on members of the security alliance to increase their own defence spending. "I'll see NATO and I'm going to tell NATO -- you got to start paying your bills. The US is not going to take care of everything, Trump said at a campaign rally in Montana last night. He lashed out at Europe over defence spending and trade, saying the US is paying for anywhere from 70 to 90 per cent to protect Europe, but the European countries are not fair to the US on trade. "They kill us on trade. They kill us on other things. They make it impossible to do business in Europe, and yet they come in and they sell their Mercedes and their BMWs to us. So we have USD 151 billion in trade deficits with the EU. On top of that, ...

Seven suspected Qaeda fighters killed in Yemen drone strike

Seven suspected Al-Qaeda fighters were killed today when a drone targeted their car in the southern Yemeni province of Shabwa, a security official said. The car was hit as it drove along a side road in Shabwa's Bihan district, the official, from forces loyal to President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi's internationally recognised government, told AFP. The US military is the only force known to operate armed drones over Yemen. The security official said the militants were members of Al-Qaeda, and said the aircraft that carried out the strike was American. The United States considers the Yemen-based Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula to be the radical group's most dangerous branch. A long-running drone war against AQAP has intensified since US President Donald Trump took office in January 2017. AQAP has flourished in the chaos of the country's civil war, which pits the Saudi-backed government against Shiite Huthi rebels.
