US says Taliban inertia on peace talks 'unacceptable'

The US today said the Taliban's failure to engage in talks to end Afghanistan's nearly 17-year conflict was "unacceptable" and called on Pakistan to exert more pressure on the militants. US envoy Alice Wells made the remarks during a visit to Kabul on Saturday, two weeks after an unprecedented ceasefire triggered spontaneous street celebrations involving Taliban fighters and security forces. "I think it (the ceasefire reaction) creates this impulse for everyone to renew their efforts to find a negotiated political solution," Wells, the principal deputy assistant secretary for the State Department's Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, told reporters. "Increasingly I think it's becoming simply unacceptable for the Taliban not to negotiate." The Taliban have so far ignored President Ashraf Ghani's offer of peace negotiations. Instead, they have insisted on direct talks with the US which Washington has repeatedly refused. One of the Taliban's key demands for engaging in talks is ...

Sri Lanka to move naval unit to Chinese-run Hambantota port

Sri Lanka will move its southern naval headquarters to the Hambantota port which is now leased to China, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said today. In his talks with Chinese leaders, Wickremesinghe made it clear that the port will not be allowed to be used for any military purposes, the prime minister's office said. In December last year, Sri Lanka handed over the control of the southern sea port of Hambantota to China on a 99-year lease for USD 1.12 billion, amid concern over Beijing's efforts to expand influence in the region. Opposition leaders have dubbed the deal as a sell out to China. Today's announcement came amid India's concerns that Hambantota could be used by China for military purposes. "The Sri Lanka navy is moving its Southern Command to Hambantota. There is no need to be frightened as security of the port will be under the control of the Sri Lanka Navy," the office quoted Wickremesinghe as saying. The state-run China Merchant Port Holdings last week paid the final

Sri Lanka moves navy unit to Chinese-run port

Sri Lanka will move its southern naval command to a port leased to a state-run Chinese firm but China will not use it for military purposes, the prime minister's office said today. Colombo's announcement will likely raise fresh concerns in New Delhi over China's military potentially getting a foothold in the Indian Ocean through the deep-sea port of Hambantota, which straddles a major east-west shipping route. "The Sri Lanka navy is moving its Southern Command to Hambantota," Ranil Wickremesinghe's office said. But it added: "There is no need to be frightened as security of the port will be under the control of the Sri Lanka Navy. "Sri Lanka has also informed the Chinese that Hambantota cannot be used (by China) for military purposes," it said. Sri Lanka owes China billions of dollars that former president Mahinda Rajapakse's government borrowed for major infrastructure projects, including the Hambantota port located on the island's southern tip. India has told the UN that it has faced the scourge of terrorism from across the borders for decades, while its counter-terror efforts get thwarted due to lack of global support in exchange of information and extradition of the accused "hiding" outside. Speaking at the United Nations High-Level Conference on Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies yesterday, Special Secretary, Internal Security, Home Ministry, Rina Mitra warned that no country can be considered safe from terrorist acts. She said terrorist entities today have links and operate across borders building networks, raising funds in various ways including internationally, propagating ideologies of hate, recruiting from foreign lands, sourcing arms and weapons from distant providers and smugglers and exploiting modern communication technologies that dissolve distances. "They are able to select targets of their choosing in countries of their choosing, cross borders often with help from state agencies and inflict terror on innocent
