Afghan special forces have killed nine civilians in an apparently botched operation in the eastern province of Nangarhar, officials said today. The victims were related to Afghan Senate chairman Fazel Hadi Muslimyaar, provincial spokesman Attaullah Khogyani told AFP. "A delegation from Kabul has been sent to Nangarhar to investigate the incident," he added. The provincial health director confirmed the dead and wounded were brought to local hospitals in Jalalabad. Displaced from Ghouta, Syrians seek refuge in emptied Afrin

Displaced from her home in Syria's Eastern Ghouta, Umaima al-Sheikh and her family sought refuge in an abandoned house across the country in Afrin. The traditionally Kurdish town had been emptied of its residents just weeks earlier, after a brutal Turkish-led offensive forced tens of thousands to flee. "No one wants to live in a house that isn't theirs, or use other people's belongings," said Sheikh. After staying briefly in rebel territory elsewhere in northern Syria, the 25-year-old moved to Afrin around a month ago with her husband Firas and two young children. "We all want to be in our own homes, our own towns, but the situation forced us to settle in a house that isn't ours," Sheikh told AFP in a leafy park in the town. "The homes we left behind are now being lived in by other people, too. This is the case for everyone in Syria, not just us," she said. Since war broke out in 2011, half of Syria's population has been displaced, including more than five million outside the country .

Korean War hero doubtful of Trump-Kim peace prospects

As a decorated war hero who once took out three machine gun nests with nothing but grenades, Choi Deuk-soo knows first hand what is at stake should US-North Korean peace talks fail -- and he is doubtful of an imminent breakthrough. The wizened 91-year-old is one of just five people still alive to have been awarded South Korea's top military medal, the Taeguk, given for a suicidally brave charge he made up an enemy-held hill in the end stages of the 1950-53 Korean War. "I hate any war," he told AFP from his apartment in Incheon, west of Seoul, apologising for his poor hearing, the result of firing a heavy machine gun for hours during a battle to repel Chinese troops that had come to the aid of North Korea's communist forces. That war led to an armistice and the two Koreas divided by the demilitarised zone. It is a festering Cold War sore that lives on today, and US President Donald Trump has vowed to combat the threat posed by the authoritarian, nuclear-armed regime in Pyongyang either

French prosecutor: 40 terrorism convicts to be released soon

France's anti-terrorism prosecutor says about 40 convicted terrorists are due to be released from French prisons this year and next, calling the entry back into society of the unrepentant ones a "major risk." Francois Molins said on BFM television today that France still faces a significant threat from homegrown supporters of the struggling Islamic State group. Molins estimated that 600 to 700 French extremists are unaccounted for in the areas of Iraq and Syria claimed by IS, though many have probably been killed. He says authorities think some organisers of the November 2015 attacks in Paris are among the dead in the Mideast. Molins says the investigation of the simultaneous attacks at the Bataclan concert hall, Paris cafes and the national stadium that killed 130 people should conclude next year.
